Some comments from a neutral observer: 1. Eurofighter was designed to counter Sukhoi 27 flanker series during the cold war. The only way to acieve the maneuverability of a Sukhoi flanker without having a thrust vectoring nozzle was using a large canard with a long effort arm (distance between the center of gravity of the aircraft and the aerodynamic center of the canard). Hence, the canard are way up there, sticking out. 2. During MMRCA competition, Eurofighter was beaten by Rafale by one important parameter - Lifecyle cost. This is an extremely important factor since the life of these aircrafts are 40 years now. Initial Acquistion Cost is an important part of the Lifecycle Cost, but not the only one. 3. The second important reason why Eurofighter Typhoon was beaten by Rafale - multiple countries with mutliple vendors for parts. This means you must have good relations with all Germany, UK, Italy and Spain at all times otherwise you can be throttled by any one of them during the crisis siutation. 4. A fully loaded Su-30MKI, Su-35 etc. is in fact more maneuverable than a fully loaded Eurofighter.

I agree with most of your comments but I think you are confusing two improtant parameters of an Aircraft performance in air superiority Role, Maneuverability and Agility. Flanker series are known for better maneuverability which basically indicates their slow speed handling, ability to have very high instantaneous turn rate, due to ability to bleed their energy. Russians are obsessed with that and their Thrust Vectoring version of Flankers and Mig-29 derivatives can do it in extreme level. However, in BVR fight and even in WVR fight, that is not the only parameters and agility is one aspect. Western Aircrafts always try to focus on higher aigility over maneuverability. The agility is defined by the aircraft's rate of acceleration, ability to retain its speed while maneuvering, sustained turn rate and recovering from slow speed stalls very quickly. These helps in WVR combats but extremely advantageous in BVR combats where you can quickly becomes Supersonic using higher acceleration to launch missile, thereby increasing its effective range, can performe evassive maneuvers without loosing speed to evade enemy Missiles and close the gap quickly to launch missile and run away. Su-30MKI or Su-35 definitely have better super maneuverability than Typhoon but Typhoon's agility is better than both. In fact, that was one of the publically published Report after Excercise Indradhanush-IV where Indian Pilots acknowledged Typhoon's agility.

BVR flight: Eurofighter(with new AESA Radar) In close combat: Eurofighter Subsonic dogfight: both are equally good Supersonic dogfight: Eurofighter Bombing missions: Rafael Interception jobs: Eurofighter Cost: Rafael (more affordable/cheaper) My Choice: Typhoon Rafael is also a very decent fighter jet specially if your budget is tight and you want a do everything kind of toy.

It's not about which one is better in what aspect , its about what are your requirements. When it comes to dogfight the su30mki is way better in maneuverability than eurofighter so why to buy a capability that is already there. When it comes to indian airforce rafel was chosen not because of cost but because of the strategic autonomy that IAf can enjoy which is not possible with eurofighter. Rafel also comes with better arsenal than eurofighter although the difference is not so much. The f4.1, f4.2, and so on upgrades on rafel will make it more versatile than its competitors in the near future. And most importantly the rafel india bought has 13 india specific enhancements for IAF which were not possible on eurofighter because of involvement of multiple countries in eurofighter program than one country in rafel aircraft program.

@@Sdrt167 your "strategic autonomy" is non existent when you buy a complete aircraft package from another country which is also bound in a closed military group aka NATO. Your so called "strategic autonomy " is decided by the NATO heads according to their interests and political situation and inclination at the any given time. Strategic autonomy is defined as the ability of a state to pursue its national interests and adopt its preferred foreign policy without depending on other foreign states. Only countries which have truly strategic autonomy in this department are USA, China, Russia and France.

I'm impressed with the capabilites of Typhoon. In Indian context will it be a game changer compared to Rafale? That is the main question. Typhoon has higher ceiling capacity compared to Rafale. Will it impact fight over the Himalayas? That is the crucial point.

The answer is Rafale and Typhhon are more or less having same capabilities and going for one over another won't give you any major advantages or disadvantages. Rafale has better multirole capabilities and higher payload capacities , suitable FOR BETTER GROUND ATTACK and Interdiction mission capabilities (A common trait in French fighters). On the other hand, Typhoon was explicitly designed to have better agility and maneuverability than modernish Russian Fighters like Mig-29 and Su-27 and their advanced variants. It has higher Thrust to Weight Ratio than rafale and even F-15, famous for its higher thrust. Based on some analysis, at lower altitude, Rafale has slightly better advantages over Typhoon whereas at higher altitude, Typhoon has better performance, due to its higher Thrust. For India, Rafale is a better choice because of its maintenenacer, upgrade and Serviceability, sourced from a single country. Not every time you buy an aircraft just because of its technical capabilities but because of its support, maintenenace and other logistical support.

I haven’t seen any aircraft doing maneuver with all their payload .. little surprised by typhoon!!! He has it every weapon on its pylons and doing flips that mean this plain is really capable

America is also using typhoon and other countries in Middle east as well but only problem is that you have good relations with every country otherwise they can block equipment during war times.So in my opinion no one should buy from America and UK unless you have very good relations and do whatever they want but France,Sweden,Russia and china don't do that things

The Typhoon has the ugliest canard position in any aircraft. Those things stick out like sore thumbs and look like a massive afterthought. In contrast, the canards on the Rafale and even our SU-30 MKI look much better implemented and are propely integrated into the aircraft's design. I'm happy the IAF got the Rafale instead of this. Atleast we have only one country to deal with when it comes to the Rafale. The Typhoon is like the proverbial "Bhanumati ka Kumba".

@@alpha001ful I totally understand the rationale of canards, I was simply talking about the implementation on this aircraft. Remember the Tejas MK2 is also likely to have canards up front.
