This has been a much requested video for some time now. And while I initially did not ever want to take on this task as I felt that the kills in the SCREAM Franchise are mostly basic stabbings, I was surprised to find a lot of nuance between each one while examining them a lot more closely. So Join me in this video as I go through each one of them chronologically, and sort them according to my specific criteria on what I think makes a great SCREAM death.

The narrative of “it’s impossible for Amber to get the upper hand on Dewey” conversation is funny because I worked in a psychiatric hospital and I’ve seen girls smaller than Amber overpower several security guards at once based on adrenaline alone.

THAT PART! There’s also documented evidence of tiny girls brutally killing men twice their size the way Amber killed Dewey, if not even worse. Adrenaline is one hell of a drug and especially when your life is in danger or when you’re intent on hurting somebody, you WILL cause some crazy injuries. They clearly haven’t seen some tiny high school girls fight, because many of them REALLY badly injure the person they’re fighting. I’ve seen girls fight people and rip out eyeballs and cause critical injuries.

Yes, you're right. And generally I think the realism of adolescents killing fully grown people or dragging lifeless bodies around can just be solved by suspension of disbelief. I in my mind always justify it by the killers having taken some enhancing drugs. Then I leave it for what it is.

Yea but Amber didnt grow a foot in the scene. Gf was obviously taller than Dewey in that scene, & Amber was way shorter..plus a headbutt to the head didnt leave a mark?

@@daveh1065 Ghostface’s height has almost never matched the actors. In the original Scream, the stuntman playing GF was 6’0. Skeet Ulrich is 6’1. Matthew Lillard is 6’4. In Scream 2022, the stuntman in costume is 5’9. Mikey Madison is 5’3. Jack Quaid is 6’2. Also, if you’re gonna have this issue, the same stuntman for Scream 1996 played GF again in Scream 2, where Laurie Metcalf was a killer, and she’s 5’4 😂 nobody ever complains about her

My favorite part about Billy's death is how he coughs and twitches after being shot the first time as he tries to stay conscious, even though he doesn't actually die there, it was very good acting on Skeet's part.

My favorite thing about Amber's death is the implication that she took Judy's bulletproof vest, and of course, she's shot by Dewey's gun, which she also took after killing him.

Kenny’s death always hits me in the feels. It’s sad to see him pointing at the little escape route for Sid and the sound design on his throat being slit is brutal. Kenny was a real one.

Caseys really did set the bar high early. It had everything that makes Scream kills great including a tense cat and mouse, a glimmer of hope, and brutality.

Jennifer’s death in scream 3 definitely deserves to be higher. Not only did she carry scream 3 which made her death very sad, the scene was also shot in such a great way imo. The way that she just helplessly called for Dewey and Gale even though they couldn’t see her was so eerie to me. And the way that her body fell through the glass when Dewey shot it and then Gale’s scream. Jennifer deserved sm better she could’ve been a great final girl.

Someone pointed out that if Chad can survive, Jennifer 100% could have survived. I’d love to have her back. The other I wish survived for additional films is Rebecca Walters, but she definitely did not survive 😂

Liv's kill (in my opinion of course) is top tier for me regardless of being a gun death. The sudden killer reveal along with the line "welcome to act 3" kicks the movie into next gear. Great stuff Zack!

I want to see more 'Savaged beyond recognition' deaths in Scream 6. I want to see more purely brutal and bloody kills like Olivia, like someone being stabbed so many times with guts coming out, or creative ones that make you go 'WTF people can die like that?' like Tatum

Agreed! We need to see deaths that make people sick to their stomach to watch because of how brutal they are or see extremely elaborate set pieces that are a spectacle. We haven’t seen that in Scream in a long time. Scream 5 was the last time we got attacks that were super brutal. I think Tara, Judy, and Chad’s attacks were the most gruesome and brutal in the last movie. The repeated shanking is super brutal, and I wanna see more of that, but have it go on for longer in the new movie.

there was a more violent version of randy’s death. wes craven planned for it to be the way it is seen in the movie. but because of the difficulties with the mpaa in the first movie, they shot it to be overtly graphic on purpose so that when wes sent the full version of the scene to the mpaa, they would tell him that he needed to cut it down. but it backfired because the mpaa liked it. they said that the death being so violent in a college setting could be social commentary

Amber’s death in Scream 5 is actually a reference to another film shot a few years ago called Once Upon a Time in Hollywood where the same actress played a character that got savagely burnt alive. She wiggles the same way in both films

I do think Liv’s character was “wrong place wrong time” but I also loved that she was the red herring and had partially red hair. Felt fitting!

I keep forgetting that Liv died at all. Because it was so sudden. Enjoyed the way incorporated her trying to look edgy and 'not boring' as a red herring.

@@ZackCherry I think vince is one but liv was more of one imo. Red Herrings for me are ppl u suspect throughout the movie. Vince was the first kill. Think like Judy in scream 4, Derek and Cotton in scream 2. All lasted throughout

Even people who are not fans of scream or perhaps have never seen scream, Casey's death is memorable because her death is clipped a lot in tv show docs or horror docs. I feel most of the deaths in the first scream are memorable.

I wish they would have kept the deleted scenes with Cici and the original plan to have Sydney find Cici’s body. Her having more screen time and Sydney seeing her in the tree would have really raised the stakes imo.

I think what adds to Kenny’s death is that bit of heroism, as he uses his last breaths to point a way out to Sidney I kinda liked Steven Stone walking up. I always saw it as him being this bigger guy, a professional guard, thus harder to immediately take down. So I liked seeing his strength in his effort to walk over after being attacked

I think Stone did believe Dewey was Gf in the moment. Until he walked out, saw Dewey & said in a surprised way "Dewdrop?" Right before he kills over.

5:04 I really think Kenny's kill and character is extremely underrated. As he is falling you see him try to point to the back of the truck. He was showing Sydney how to get away in his last moments instead of even thinking of helping himself.

Fun fact for those who dont know Scream 3 didnt have much gory or brutal kills because of real life murders, the studio had to censor a lot of things, scream 3 was suppose to be much bloodier and gorier. In the roman and anjelina ghostface duo script there was a kill where a victim was stabbed from the back of the head with the knifes blade coming out from there MOUTH. Now that would have been the greatest kill of the franchise!!!! screw weinsteins for screwing it all up

At 35:05 I actually love the Bruce Willis line! Adam Brody is telling Anthony Anderson in the scene prior how it sucks to be a cop in a horror movie unless you're Bruce Willis. So the fact that Perkins gets a knife to the head right after, and Hoss saying that to him still being fresh in his brain as he's dying feels very in character for him.

Regarding 30:05 - As an Industrial Door Specialist, I can absolutely say, yes - a door as seen in that scene, could crush you. Break a bone if you're lucky. I seen doors, whether that be a garage/security/shutter door... I've seen them do a lot worse.

When you got to Jenny's death I always get confused because garage doors, at least mine, won't go down if your arm is in the way of it closing so how doesn't it detect that she was under it like at all, I also much prefer the cut opening kill we got with Jenny and Marnie it's so unerving watching Jenny flail about on the couch dying and Marnie think it's a joke until she realizes too late

Garage doors weren’t legally required to have sensors until 1993. Scream came out in 1996, I’m sure it took more than 3 years for majority of garages in America to be upgraded 😂.

I thought Sarah using the props to fight back was almost upsetting- she had the “Tatum scene” in the movie. She fights back and gets killed hanging in a doorframe- half in half out. Clever way to replicate the scene without making it obvious, but she really felt helpless from the moment she walked into the costume room

First of all: great video! :) I agree with you mostly, but I guess the one where we disagree the most is Liv's death! I agree that the scene is kinda sloppy, especially with as you mentioned the blood on the wall and the corpse just disappearing in the next scene. But I love how...dry(?) that kill was. Like they were all accusing each other and then sudddenly Amber is like nah it's me and right off shoots Liv. Idk if it's just me but that was one of my fav moments of the entire movie tbh!

The thing that bothers me about Dewey’s death isn’t that “ amber couldn’t take him.” Amber does have the advantage since he’s got nerve damage and he’s been out of the game for a bit. I was honestly more mad with Dewey since I felt like he should have known better 😅. Like we had that whole headshot scene in Scream 3 and I just thought since he was basically the expert now on surviving serial killers and knew the rules that he would’ve just gone with a headshot on Amber 🤷🏻. I was just like screaming to the screen “ god dammit Dewdrop THE HEAD !!!!”

I think I have a good idea!: save this tier list Zack, and when Scream VI comes out just add those kill to the list! Then you don’t have to make a whole video re-ranking the kills from that movie, you can just update this one - or maybe even rank the Scream VI kills separately and at the end of this hypothetical video, add them to this list

Dewey's death hurt me too. The first time I watched it, I knew he was a goner when he stepped back out of the elevator. I was in tears by the time he was actually killed. Poor Dewey.

Noticed the S-tier is basically Scream 1,2 and 5 kills. Looking back they do have the best and most interesting and creative kills. It's all about quality than quantity I guess! A good kill needs to be iconic, shocking, bloody and has elements of surprise rather than a simple stabby stab!

@@amandamorgan8349 your blind as fuck if you think 5 had no blood. 3 had no blood one guy literally had a quick explosion and another dude was just thrown off the building and several other kills was basically off screen. 3 easily had the worse kills in the franchise. And 4 all the beginning kills was silly and dumb with them being stab kills. And I said 5 was one of the best personally I think the first one still has the best kills in general. 3 had no blood and 4 was over the top dumb so do you honestly thing 5 had worse kills then 3 or 4? And amber and Richie was brutitally killed. Some of the most brutal in the franchise one was half burned to a crisp and another was stabbed a dozen times,throat sliced and shot 3 times after lol. Those 2 kills alone put it ahead of 3 and 4.

I kind of disagree about Steve's kill. When I was 7, my sister got Scream on VHS for Christmas and it was the uncut (?) version and that longer shot of his guts just spilling out....I'd never seen something like that before. And when I, every now and then, see that version I'm still struck by that feeling in a way

I saw Scream 2 in theaters with my dad. We were alone in the theater except for a single guy in the back who disappeared half way through the film. so added horror effect.

I have an idea for a ranking of all the Ghostface phone calls. I think the criteria that you are using for the Ghostface kills in this video could be used on the calls as well. Yess I remember watching Scream 1-3 as a kid with watching 1 and 2 back to back I was extremely impressed and I was always under the impression the opening kills are the GOAT then I saw 3's opening with Cotton Weary I was kinda let down

What I dislike about Olivia's death is how different it is from the rest of the kills in S4... so much violence, brutality, gore. While the others are just "regular scream series" kills. Always get me like... what? why? poor thing...

The Amber/Dewey complain annoys me a lot too cuz you can tell Radio Silence did that whole scene with the fact that a tiny girl was behind Ghostface in their minds, like the tiptoes thing or how Dewey actually wins the fight against her and just dies cuz she caught him off guard.

33:40 Rebecca getting thrown from the parking structure on to the NEWS VAN is not at all unnecessary. Jills plan is literally for millions of people to see the murder spree shes a “target” of. Killing Rebecca quietly and alone would not have done this. Throwing Rebecca from a height in front of tonnes of reporters and the police, however, does accomplish this. Its key to her plan

Personally I like cottons kill. Him rushing to his wife. The mistrust and seeing her get killed because of it. The little fight he does give. I liked it.

I enjoy your ranking and your video. Here is where my top five differs. (I'm also including Scream six) 1. Casey (obviously) The tree, the hope, the mom's scream, how she couldn't call out for her mom... everything made this kill so amazing and gruesome in my opinion. 2. Dewey. If this same thing would have happened in Scream 2, I wouldn't have placed him here; however, he lasted five whole scream movies, and the emotional turmoil I felt when I saw him die... it made this one of the best kills for me. 3. Olivia. I agree. This is my #3 as well. Gruesome, somewhat unexpected, and the aftermath with Sidney walking into her room just ties it together. 4. Billy Loomis- His struggle with Sidney and his coming back TWICE. 5. Tatum- She was kicking his ass and girl bossing it... and then the writers made her into the "dumb blonde with the big tits" and it turned into the most comedic death in the franchise in my opinion.(Maybe with the exception of Mr. Bruce Willis Cop).

Drew Barrymore will always be the best and most impactful. Will never forget that. Not only was the scene amazing, but seeing an A list actor get murdered right in the opening scene was so shocking.

Awesome effort, Zack! I love the specific attention to detail you use in your ranking. I disagree with your placements for Tom Prinze (his death was the highlight of 3 for me) and Olivia (I found it simultaneously over-the-top and indifferent - she's getting savaged beyond recognition, but she isn't even the central character in her own death - the other players get more attention). Aside from that, I thought this was completely spot on and I loved watching from start to finish. Thanks again for the excellent Scream content!

Cici's death was the first one I saw, with that scene specifically being my introduction to the series. I think that Maureen's death scene was so effective that even the parody in Scary Movie still didn't take away from it. That harrowing scream from Jada has stayed with me for over 20 years

I like the Richie kill because he definitely deserves but it also sets you on edge for the Sam character to finish off the movie. About to go see 6 soon so I'm curious if it sets anything up in that regard.

Drew’s death is so good because she died so early when u expected her to be the protagonist. Plus the chase is so scary bc i know that everyone of us had experience being alone before and this def traumatized me a bit😂
