Everyone was WRONG about FRAM oil filters

Fram oil filters are not near as bad as people make them out to be, we tear down this filter that has been used for 8,500 miles and see how it has held up.

Thank you for this. I’ve been using Fram for many many years and never had one single problem. And you’re right, if they were so bad, there would’ve been a recall to pull them off shelves , stop production, and the company would be forced to identify the issue to the public. And if anybody could “prove” that it damaged their engine, there would be a class action suit against the company. So somebody had it out for Fram when they made this nonsense up. Not to say that they’re perfect. Every company has their flaws and mishaps. But overall that myth was debunked.

I've heard the negative comments about Fram oil filters for years, although I have used Fram oil filters for more than 40 years on all my vehicles and i have yet to have an engine failure, or any issues that would indicate lack of flow or excessive engine wear, nowadays i use the Fram ultra synthetic oil filters!

This is what happens when "influencers" start cutting open oil filters and testing filters by looking at them and no lab testing whatsoever. My almost 40 years of maintaing personal vehicles with the orange can of death with no failures tells me all I need to know. I've had all my engine failures with the coolant system.

I use FRAM Tough Guard cartridge oil filters on my 13 Camry. No problems in the past 10 years. I have used FRAM Extra Guard filters on my past cars, over the last 40 years 2 VWs, 2 Hondas and 2 Ford F150 Trucks all with no problems. So, like you say FRAm filters are not as bad as they say! Yes they have cardboard end caps, but that part of the filter is not under much stress!

Actually, it’s an engineered fiber end cap, not cardboard or felt or paper or anything else the Fram haters like to claim. And you’re right…not under much stress.

I've used tough guard filters for over 50 years. I hear things like the metal is thin, the end caps are cardboard, it blew up my engine...etc. In a lot of cases it was poor maintenance or low oil level so guys are looking for excuses for their stupidity. There is nothing wrong with them. Good info

You said it right on point a lot of this false, misleading, and bad opinion of Fram oil filters is from people that jumped on the bandwagon or neglect their maintenance intervals and oil changes and ran the oil and filters way over the miles it was intended to run

I’ve been using frame oil filters on my ram Cummins for years now and I never had a problem and I already had three trucks but I always use the 20,000 mile standard but will change my oil around 8000 to 9000 miles so far and never had an issue right now I have the Silver color frame that runs 15,000 miles and so far my trucks been doing good

I used FRAM filters on a GEO metro with 166K miles. I’m the original owner and have religiously chained my own oil. No issues, but my oil change interval isn’t 10K miles, and I’m not putting it on a heavy duty vehicle.

Good to know. I take my Chevy to Walmart to have the oil changed and they put on a Fram filter. So far no issues.

If you are taking your Chevy for an oil change at Walmart, you have other things to worry about.

The metal is thinner so you need to be careful if using filter wrench to tighten. Should be hand tightened anyway.

I use Honda A02 filter which made by Honeywell and look similar to Fram. I wonder if Honda's version is PH or TG Fram equivalent?

The Honda A02 is a Fram. They have the Honda contract.

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard something about the fram filters restricting oil flow. It might not have even been fram but I heard that somewhere about some particular vehicle.

Hmm not sure on that one, a lot of OEM filters are fram as well.

Proven that Wix advertisements said these accusations against Fram, but there's been nothing proven. You can watch cross section videos of Fram and it's no different than Mobil 1 or K&N

About a month ago I was driving home from work and noticed my oil pressure dropping. It went from around 60psi to basically nothing. I stopped and got my truck towed home. I went to oriellys and got a WIX oil filter to replace the Fram "Tough Guard" filter that I put on my engine 1000 miles earlier. Swapped them, started my truck, and oil pressure was normal again. I cut apart the fram to see it was completely collapsed. I got lucky and learned my lesson.

The inside of the filter is just a fabric/paper material. Even if it collapsed the oil could still pass through it. Def gonna need proof

Was a mechanic for many years and never heard of that happening to any filter. If it did happen you should have contacted Fram as they would want it to see what caused the collapse.

Millions upon millions of people have an do use fram filters they do a good job is there better out there yeah of course but fram is ok if it’s all ya got it’s better than the roll of toilet paper my old ford tractor uses as the oil filter swear to god that’s what they used to use as oil filters look it up lots of cars trucks n equiptment used it for years I think that’s where the myth stems from cause the roll of tp is known to come apart after along time without changing that’s my take on it for what it’s worth to ya

Under 5,000 miles between filters they are probably fine. There is a video with 5,000 miles on the filter, the cardboard end separated from the pleated filter material. I'll pass.

The complaints are for the metal "can" type, You need to cut some up yourself.

The filter you show isn't the Fram filters people complain about. the can filters have a "cardboard" media it's not actually cardboard but you get what I mean.

I think what you are referring to are the end caps that seal off the ends of the filter media. You are correct. Not “cardboard “. It’s actually an engineered fiber and it works just fine, just not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as metal.

Fram filters are garbage because they're Rusty brand new.... You don't have to take my word for it you can literally go to any auto parts store open up a box with a fram oil filter in it and you will notice moisture and rust. When you're done looking at that one open up another one and realize that that wasn't the

Been using them for quite some time, have 6 of them in my garage no rust on any of them that I have seen - pretty decent filter IMO and not terribly expensive (using ultra synthetic XG8A and XG3980)

Dude, watch videos on KZfaq here, where people cut open different brands of oil filters. Fram oil filters are total garbage compared to others. They are made super cheaply compared to other brands. Just because you havent had a problem yet, doesn't mean anything. You are completely clueless.

I have ben using them for 43 years, never a problem! Put my first one on my first car, a 1972 Ford Galaxy 500 when i was 18. If you do regular oil changes your fine!

You're hearing it now because I just had a repair done on my truck and the mechanic found a broken down oil filter had plugged oil passages and caused lifter failure at 6,000 mi. (10,000 km). The parts store was all out of my usual Fram Tough Guard so I went with the Fram Ultra Synthetic. All within a few days the "Change Oil Soon" light came on, then a slight ticking sound, and then followed by an engine light and a more pronounced knocking sound. I used the Fram oil filter along with 5 quarts of Castrol Edge Dexos 1 Gen 3 oil, and I used 1 quart of the same oil but was Gen 2. Anything I found about the oil said it was okay do mix the two before I proceeded with the oil change
