25 years ago I was a room service waiter in a hotel and Dan Aykroyd stayed there while they were opening a House of Blues. He ordered a bunch of food for a small party he was throwing, and he was probably the nicest guest I ever dealt with - as soon as the door opened, he started yelling at people to get out of my way so I could get the food in, and he tipped me a hundred dollars. I was only there for like five minutes, but in that time he managed to impress me as a really warm, friendly, genuine guy.

Not using that Vallejo poster was an absolute crime....WOW. The studio should be ashamed.

I absolutely love this movie, would give anything for a widescreen director's cut. I know he said most hate this movie, but almost 30 years later, I think Most don't even know it exists. The people I've introduced to it have always found it hilarious.

Nothing but trouble is an under appreciated classic. Bat shit insane but extremely enjoyable.

The story about Chevy Chase is funny because he just did an interview in 2017 where he stated that he did not know why people in hollywood didn't want it work with him. The interview was sad because he genuinely couldn't see he treated people badly.

John Candy was such a class act. By all accounts he was such a pleasant person. Never heard an unkind word about him.

I absolutely love this film as is BUT I'd probably kill to be able to see the director's cut.

I knew it flopped at the box office but I was under the impression it was a cult hit nowadays. I loved it and still do.

We should petition for Criterion to recover the Director's Cut and remaster it.

Say what you will about Dan Aykroyd, but he seems like he'd take on as many jobs on set just so the movie would get made right.

One of my favorite movies ever. So many great lines. "Sell porkbellies, buy gold" is perhaps the best. This movie failed because they didn't market it. I was 12 in 1991 and it came on HBO one day. I saw the title credits...Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, John Candy, and Dan Aykroyd. I thought wow what is this? I'd never heard of it. I watched it simply for the stars and loved it. Though thought "wtf am I watching?" several times. I went out of my way to show it to my friends and they all loved it. This movie is only "loved by few" because few have been lucky enough to see it.

Ahh, the good ole days when a few craftsmen could come together and make a great looking film, based off one man's crazy idea. This would never be made today by a major studio.

I was just watching a documentary on Netflix about the evolution of hip-hop where they profiled the group Digital Underground. They showed a clip from a video they did for the track “Same Song” and it was done for THIS movie. Dan Aykroyd even cameos in the video!

I was 6 when this movie first came, out and I grew up watching it countless times. All my friends over the years that have saw it, or I showed it too all loved it. One of one all-time favs for sure!

I have to imagine a lot of that "Great! Here's $40,000,000!" had to do with this underlying fact "This is the guy who invented Ghostbusters!"

My friends and I discovered this a few years after it was made when we were about 11/12. We all fell in love with how ridiculous it is and would watch it several times a year. I think I still have my old VHS copy that I recorded from someone else's legit tape.

i still have it on VHS, my dad loved it. the crazy sets are what made it stand out. and john candy. Chevy Chase was the turd in the punchbowl. at some point he decided he was more important than everyone else and thats when his career started to tumble.

If I were to use the the "Mandela Device" collecting dust in my lab to reach into an alternate universe I would pick out the version of this movie where they cast Rick Moranis instead of Chevy Chase. His take on the character would be easier to relate to and route for, building to a heroic arc. Also experience with horror comedy and never phoned in performances. Perhaps this is just from my extensive scientific studies of SCTV and Spaceballs concluding that Moranis and John Candy together is generally a good thing. I bet there is also an alternate universe where Chevy passed the role off to Steve Martin and it was also much better.

I totally agree about the whole Chevy Chase thing. The only film I thought he was hilarious in was Christmas Vacation. Other than that, I can't stand Chase. I wonder if Nothing but Trouble would've done a lot better in theaters had they cast a better lead. Perhaps Bill Murray?

I want to sentence the 4 people that gave this video a thumbs down a one way trip to The Bone Stripper. I loved this movie Cecil. You always cover the films that people didn't know how to react to but spoke to me for some reason. Like Disturbing Behavior this film was a messy thrill ride and you conveyed that perfectly. Aykroyd is both brilliant and totally insane, when you put his ideas in capable hands that can weed out the worst parts and clean it up into something people can digest the results are incredible, if you just let him run the show it's going to be an entertaining train wreck.

Very well researched except for one detail: Bonfire of the Vanities was always intended as a Christmas 1990 release. In fact, if you read The Devil’s Candy: The Bonfire of the Vanities Goes to Hollywood, you’ll find that WB anticipated it to get Oscar nominations from it that year. However, I believe the original idea was that both movies would’ve been released during the 1990 holiday season before the recutting. The one thing both movies do have in common is that their movie posters look almost the same. It’s brought up at the end of The Devil’s Candy. I personally like the insanity of this movie and as I grew up with the movie with countless viewings on HBO (I remember their ad: “While on their way to Atlantic City, Chevy Chase just made a wrong turn...”), I never realized that it was supposed to be a horror comedy but then again I was only 6 when I first saw it. Now as an adult, I see what they were aiming for, which makes me appreciate it even more (I just wish they had stuck to the title of Valkenvania, which would’ve worked with the tagline they had. I bet it would’ve been “All they wanted was to get to Atlantic City. Where they ended up was...Valkenvania”). Still, by not using that Vallejo illustration, WB let one of the great pieces of art pass them by. I think it works way better and it might’ve made the movie a sleeper hit. Then again, maybe I’m just spitballing. This production history (despite that one detail) is very well researched. I totally believe all of the stories. It all adds up.

Rented it on my 13th birthday when it came out on video. It STUNK. It had so much potential, all this production design, a big cast and it was just straight-up unfunny garbage. It could have been such a roller coaster of comedy and horror.

I remember renting this film at nine years old from blockbuster and falling in love with it. I own it now. Going back and watching it as an adult, with an understanding of how films are made, you can see how much work went into the sets.

I knew it would only be a matter of time until someone covered this movie on here. This movie has a ton of behind the scenes madness according to the IMDB trivia section like for example there is a supposed teaser trailer or something like that where the cast are singing the film's theme to the theme song from the first Ghostbusters, also the backlot used for filming the movie was also the same one used behind the scenes of the box-office bomb Bonfire Of The Vanities (a billboard used for advertising the movie was replaced for a Nothing But Trouble billboard). There are very little publicity materials for this movie, I would definitely say that it's time they gave it a Blu-Ray release. I think Scream Factory would do a good job with this.

Aykroyd is famous as hell...but he is still very underated. After hearing all the back stories, one realizes how multitalented this guy is.

Dan Akroyd is a crazy person. I loved some of his movies, but this is truer to him than say, Ghostbusters. People had to nix a lot of his insane ideas in order to make that movie a hit

Chevy's ego is the main reason the film flopped.

Chase was getting paid for acting in this production While aykryod had to be director, producer, and played 2 roles that required heavy make up and a body suit Gee i wonder why aykryod is getting paid more than u chase >:(

My dad was one of the few people to see this movie in theaters. He thought it was good and had no idea it flopped. He just assumed it wasn't that popular. I hope this movie gets a rerelease or even the directors cut Aykroyd made.

I ADORE Dan Aykroyd. It's a shame he couldn't do any more directing, because I think there should be more directors that allow this kind of creativity from the crew working under them. This wasn't a film made by a single auteur, herding the actors and crew like cattle for the sake of his vision, it was a passion project made by a village of talented people who were encouraged to be creative

Oh my god I must have seen this movie like a hundred times growing up. Such an underappreciated classic. It was such an odd but enjoyable movie and I can't believe I've forgotten about it. Thank you for reminding me of its existence and for the nostalgia.

I absolutely love this movie with all of its little gags and real life effects it is absolutely amazing. I think it has survived well as a cult classic and really do enjoy watching it even today and always love watching it

This could easily have been a Terry Gilliam movie: the story, the production design that's totally over the top... BTW: Ackroyd firmly believes in the paranormal. He claims that he had paranormal experiences while he lived in a house that used to belong to Cass Eliot of the Mamas & the Papas. Two ghosts (Eliot and an unknown man) were supposedly active in the house. Those alleged experiences were a source of inspiration for Ghostbusters. He's also a UFO believer.

I loved this movie so much as a kid we named two of our pet cats after some of the characters. RIP Bobo, and Little Devil.

Seriously so underrated. The visuals alone are stunning and the cameos and what Dan Akroyd was able to do was insane. A full plate on this film is a huge understatement.
