I'm clear about one thing, Dr. Sam Richards has unbelievable guts and courage to teach a course on race and culture in today's climate at any university. Unreal.

Every single person in that room is privileged beyond belief. They are more privileged than most people throughout history.

This channel makes me realize every day just how little college students know. It’s a reminder that they are still kids. They are still professional regurgitators.

It’s painful watching students unable to make a coherent argument. They can vent their emotions, question other’s motives, make bold assertions, repeat slogans - anything except reason.

What the professor is doing is important. More often than not when we talk about complex social issues, such as white privileged, people try to oversimplify and talk in euphemisms and cliches. But they can't explain themselves as easily as they speak in euphemisms & cliches. You can't just make loaded generalizations & be surprised when someone asks you what you mean

It's class privledge, and it doesn't matter what your skin colour is. If you come from a poor background it's harder to move up the social scale. It's likely you live in an area that's economically underfunded, schools don't have the same resources as an area that's richer. It will a bigger struggle to get to college and University than if you have family that are economically wealthier regardless of skin colour. You're already several steps ahead of someone from poorer neighborhood. Now it's not impossible to move up from working class to middle or higher but it's a lot harder to begin with. Your route will probably be more of a struggle than someone who is already at middle or upper social scales.

The concept of "white privilege" sounds like a discussion of a "caste system". Perhaps it would be useful to examine past and current caste systems based on criteria other than skin color, to determine how other societies, both past and present, dealt or deal with the issue.

I find it completely fascinating how they (and by extension we) throw words around and know the rhetoric but when it comes down to specifics, often something gets lost. For example: “you are advantaged because you are white” - what does “advantaged” mean? how are they “advantaged” over other people? If I’m white, dirt poor, unemployed, no bank account, unable to go to university, specifically how am I advantaged over the person of colour in that room who has never had need of anything, who is sitting in a university class and did not pay to be there (parents paid), who drives a Tesla? Please tell me, without all the jargon they parrot, where is this white privilege and “advantage” I experience? Specifically? Can you point to it? Without any constructed words? ….. I'm a white man who grew up in a financially challenged family... I know what it means to be poor, I lived 6 months with no electricity and spent 5 on the street getting treated like junkie because I had no money. If I have white privilege... Can someone teach me how it works please? Who thought about me while I was half starved and so sleep deprived I actually hallucinated?

The only time I hear the word "Privileged" is by someone that wants to try to prove that they have had hardships. All folks have hardships in some way or another. I always liked what Tony Dungy said "even though we can’t always choose our circumstances, we can always choose our attitude in the circumstances." I believe that Attitude goes a long way in any circumstances. So if we sit around feeling like someone else made it because they have "Privilege" then I believe that is a negative Attitude and will lead to more anger about ones circumstances. Even the richest most powerful folks have very hard circumstances either in their past or currently. I just don't care about who has what "Privilege", I rather have a attitude that is thankful for where I am and looking toward where I want to be in the future. Hardships vary between seasons of our life. Stop blaming folks that have nothing to do with you other than they breath the same air as you do.

He's basically saying "don't just repeat what you heard, have a think about what it means". It's great to watch.

From the few videos I have seen from this professor, I like how he pushes his students to think beyond the “socially acceptable” to what is real. Life is complicated and nuanced. There is no broad brush that can cover everything.

I can imagine these students don’t feel free to speak the complete truth of what they think. Sadly, our “leaders” who are largely responsible for setting the tone of the country are more concerned about keeping us divided for political purposes than they are in making our country the inclusive melting pot it was meant to be.

The professor stays solidly in the middle of the road. I’m from a dirt poor family of nine and grew up in a 2br house. I overcame poverty through hard work. Every decision we make determines our path. I’m a millionaire now because I refused to accept the hand that was dealt to me. I will happily argue the myth of white privilege with anyone.

Class is something you can read in many cases. What the girl in purple says just isn't true.

I got lucky. My Dad was not very verbal so I seeked mentors. I basically did hundreds of mini interviews asking older people their history, what they overcame, what lessons they think I need. They saved me from wasting my time and focus of anything I decide is important. We are top 4% US family wealth. Done with no money gifts, no college education. I highly recommend finding mentors everywhere you can.

Someone is always going to have it better than some. That doesn't mean that you are privileged.

In this day and age, THIS is the stuff that college kids should be educated with. Not Woke nonsense.

Going out to work .Saving up your money. Being responsible. Getting yourself a good education having some self-determination and self-respect. So all this is a privilege now. Maya is so lucky to have gone to a high school where you can work hard and get good grades without being tormented and attacked by classmates for "acting white." So she was able to get into Penn State.

Keep at it Prof. Maybe they didn't snap out of their trance yet, but you're planting seeds and as those kids continue experiencing life, some will compare those ideas you presented them with what they see and start to wake up.

What is BLACK Privilege? 1) Privilege is wearing $200-$700 sneakers when you’ve never had a job. 2) Privilege is wearing $300 Beats headphones while living on public assistance. 3) Privilege is having a Smartphone with a Data plan, which you receive no bill for. 4) Privilege is living in public subsidized housing where you don’t have a utility or phone bill and where rising property taxes, rents and energy costs have absolutely no effect on the amount of food you can put on your table, which is largely covered by Government Food Stamps. 5) Privilege is having free health insurance for you and your family that's paid for by working taxpayers who often can't afford proper health coverage for their own families. 6) Privilege is having multiple national organizations promoting and protecting just your race alone -- that are subsidized by federal tax dollars. 7) Privilege is having access to a national college fund that supports only one race. 8) Privilege is having a television network that supports only one race. 9) Privilege is having most of the media news networks refuse to cover incidents wherein one race (one-eighth of the population) commits 50% of the crimes. 10) Privilege is the ability to go march against, and protest against anything that triggers you, without worrying about calling off from work and the consequences that accompany such. 11) Privilege is having as many children as you want, regardless of your employment status, and be able to send them off to daycare or pre-school you don’t pay for. 12) Privilege is being able to vote in many states without showing a driver's license, voter ID card or other credentials -- just because your race claims they should be exempt from such requirements. 13) Privilege is being able to riot, loot, commit arson and tear down historic monuments without consequences -- just because you don't like folks such as Columbus, U. S. Grant or even Lincoln. 14) Privilege is being able to get into almost any college of your choosing based on your race, not your grades or merit. 15) Privilege is having most of your life paid for by the working men and women who DO HAVE TO DEAL WITH RISING TAXES AND COSTS! 16) Privilege is getting a 25% boost to your welfare in Biden's term, yet those who worked their entire lives and on social security got 5.9% -- you know, those you now call “PRIVILEGED.”

I grew up white and lower middle class. That woman in the middle has 1000x the privilege I had. Especially now. Guarantee she gets the job instead of me if we both apply and I have more experience.

There’s a very old saying that goes like this l: “If everyone’s problems were heaped into one pile, most people would be content to gather up their own problems and be content.”

Go ahead and tell me how privileged I was growing up, working for $1 an hour at a farm, getting up at 3:30 in the morning to milk 100 cows before having to go to school, then going home from school to show up at work for the afternoon early evening milking. I was 14 years old. When I got married at 22, I worked 2 complete shifts at work. 1 shift to support my wife and daughter and another complete shift to pay for my passion of rebuilding older muscle cars. I am now a grandfather who still loves cars, motorcycles, guns and fast computers. I use a tower I built for gaming when Windows XP came out and own a 1993 Z28 with 52,000 original miles. I am not rich but I don't measure happiness that way. If I can pay my bills and have enough money left over to keep up my car. I cut wood all spring and summer to burn my wood stove throughout the winter.

You are privileged when you can have a discussion about other peoples privilege. My cousin works for a saw mill, barely keeps food on the table for him and his adopted daughter with food stamps, has dentures because he couldn’t afford dental care until a charity group paid for his dentures…yup he’s white, but privileged? Nope. He spent so much time in jail and on probation before he got his life straightened out, he was beaten and harassed by the local cops (was drunk on his own property one time and got hog tied and taken to jail for it and then released). He is the poster child for AA now, we are so proud of him. But no, he has the privilege of being alive and being an American. But his privilege isn’t due to his skin color.

It's sad that people walk on eggshells on these topics. I'm glad we have a professor that is willing to open up these discussions and challenge people's views.

This professor is an amazing example of what the majority of our universities and colleges are missing. He promotes thought, asks questions that force people to dig into their beliefs. What a breath of fresh air. GOD bless this prof.

Grew up in a trailer with 4 others. Had to have a job by 9 years old to make ends meet. Always tried to better my self and work harder than everybody. Now own my own farm. One of the largest in the county. Live a beautiful house that we built. Has nothing to do with color but willing to do the work and build relationships that no one else would.

The US seems to allow certain people to have financial security. I'm white, born and raised in the US. As a result of chronic health issues and lack of resources, I became poor. Governments have allowed deprivation to become normalized and I became one of its victims because I was not born into a family with financial security.

Privilege is not about race. It's about wealth.

It is terrifying these college students view these crazy ideas as facts. Critical thinking skills need to be taught in the 5th grade. I wish one of these politicians would propose that for a change. I took one online college course in critical thinking and it changed everything. Learning how to think critically opened a can of worms and i went down a rabbit hole researching and questioning everything i thought to be true. This sh*t is just crazy. My grandmother grew up in a Catholic orphanage, she worked her whole life. My mom was born in a Montana mining camp the day the stock markets crashed. She worked with handicap children while my Dad worked on a chicken ranch. My husband's family were dirt poor, his Dad got sick so he couldn't work. His mother worked in resthomes to help support their 7 children. My hubby went to work to help them out, later he was the first in his family to go to college. I guess we somehow missed that white privilege thing.

I'm white as hell, but grew up on welfare. That lady's definition of White Privilege-- not being inhibited and just thinking about yourself... totally the opposite of my experience.

The ironic thing is that “being rich” like in the top 1% is the minority situation. You have more in common with the people you share a socioeconomic class with than someone in a different class regardless of their skin color. Sure, people might make assumptions about you based on the stereotypes they associate with skin color or your sex, your body size, the country you’re from etc, but that’s not what is claimed by people who believe in WP. I can understand why people put so much on it. I wonder if he could have another discussion about having a “black burden”. It’s not that privilege is bad, but things that are put on you, like burdens (above and beyond what’s “normal” for your class), could be argued to be due to some other factor, like race or historical oppression. I think focusing conversation on white privilege actually does harm to people really seeing the issue of inequality of opportunity due to race or class.

A lot of rich kids that don’t live in the real world

It feels that these students skirt around actually answering "how" solely based on skin color, not including class or anything else, being white gives you privilege. Still enjoy the discussions and seeing this type of dialogue happening

During the entire history of the human race there have been instances of discrimination and slavery. Two countries, in the 19th century, took steps to end slavery. The US and Great Britain. It is remarkable how easily both countries forget their unprecedented decision and I am very impressed with this professors taking these tough ideas to his students for a better understanding.

So, basically it's not just white privilege, it's cultural and socioeconomic privilege based on who you are and where you are at any give time. In other words, there is also black privilege, Asian privilege, Mexican privilege, Arab privilege, etc. "White privilege" is nominal at best, because it only comes into play in very few circumstances, just like all the other "privileges" people have based on their appearance.

This man is doing the work that is necessary. We must protect him at all costs.

I am 68 years old and came from a middle class family. I was fortunate in many ways, economically, life style and community respect based on my father’s profession and success. I felt privileged, but I never related it to my skin color/race. My friends and my peers were ethnically diverse and racial concerns, other than the civil rights movement and political climate of the times. My generation tried hard to be accepting of other ethnicities and people from less fortunate economic status. I may have been oblivious, but I never experienced white privilege first hand. Growing up I experienced episodes of racism towards me from a few black males and Latino gang members targeting me for bullying.

Do I have white privilege? I had two parents. I graduated from high school where I learned to read and write. Early in my career, an oil-well-performance laboratory hired me because I could do seventh-grade math. (Things like: find the volume of a cylinder.) I have never officially served any jail time. I had prisons (both federal and state) for customers. I can understand how these things give me an advantage over people who do not have two parents, or do not have the ability to read, or have wasted their life in jail; but I don't see how my race affects other people's literacy with either words or numbers, or has anything to do with them spending jail time.

Students can't even put a sentence together explaining their beliefs. Wow

I'm white and i feel im privileged. I'm working 60 hours a week, I have a lot of physical and mental issues after 30 years working like that but my privilege makes that I can pay my drugs and visits to the doctors and survive stress. The only thing I ask God if he exists is that my kids be not so privileged as I've been or my wife has been. This teacher is absolutely amazing!

One single way of thinking, the professor is trying to open their mind and they are either afraid to say it or they really are not listening.

Point proven, few things in life are clear cut and easy. People can be complicated and they bring that into everything else, in contrast the world isn't complicated at all.

I love listening to his talks. He brings up a lot of relevant stuff. I love hearing everybody’s interpretation of their experience. It’s a funny, thought white privilege if it exists or if it doesn’t. I’ve seen white people not get specific jobs because they were white and they need to bring more colored people in. I’m all for balance. Privilege is subjective. I’m a 48 year old white man and was raised in a biracial house my stepdad was black. Both my parents were alcoholic and drug users, extremely abusive, psychologically and physically. We were poor to wear. My mom had to go get food from the church to help feed us. I had to move out when I was 14 due to the abuse. I am a dyslexic high school dropout that spent my whole childhood in special education. I am a passive person which all my employers would take advantage of me, because I could not say no, because all I wanted to do was make the peace and make people happy. I had to fight my way in this world. Nothing was given to me. It takes people not to quit, but to fight for yourself to build a life better than what you were given. treat your loved ones and friends and family with compassion and understanding. Fortunately, I was able to start a small construction company and make a decent living for my family. At the same time, fighting the thoughts of chaos from when I was raised. I was told I was going to be nothing growing up. I stay true to myself my wife, my kids. Love everybody.

Good professor. He did push in uncomfortable ways but the students appear very entrenched. “ you just sound like a white guy that doesn’t wanna get canceled.” Bold..

It’s all about how ur parents create a life and have a huge impact on how ur going to grow most of the time

White privilege = majority privilege. I am minority in my country but rarely complain about that things.

When I was in elementary school, whenever we have somewhat a first world problem, one of our teachers often responded by saying: if you can afford to have three meals a day, you are already automatically more privileged than half of the world (which was true btw), if you have a roof over your head, you have both of your parents, you have a school to attend to, you are on top of the world.

When I was growing up my dad had so much white privilege he got to work 3 jobs(1 full time 2 part time totaling 80 hours a week) just to put powdered food on the table. He had to pay extra taxes on the extra money he earned so the minority kids on welfare could have enough to eat--and we saw them in the grocery store and their shopping carts were full !!!

I would push back that Black people as a members of a protected class have privilege. I will relate a story that happened at least 40 years ago here in Miami-Dade County, Florida. A secretary at Miami-Dade Community College was caught stealing and dismissed from her position. She went to the local NNACP office and complained she was dismissed because the administrator was racist. The Woman was reinstated, and the administrator was reassigned to another campus to preserve the image of the college. There are many stories like this, where Black people get a pass on offenses that would get White people in trouble simply because every negative act against a Black person by a White is immediately deemed racist thereby giving Black people Black Privilege. Even the fact that White people are privileged is a form of Black privilege since it justifies anything Black people do as equitable acts of push back against the skewed playing field upon which they exist.

Am I privileged, yes, but not because of the color of my skin. My privilege comes from the fact that I cam from a home with two loving parents that taught me to work and to treat everyone with respect.
