Just few things from my observation that I learned while spending some time in France. I must admit, while different, I greatly enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere in France, and I hope it stays the same for a long time.
Will be back to renovating soon! #chateaudiy #renovation #vlog #countryside #movingtofrance #19thcentury #chateau #loirevalley #saumur #castle

Your doleful accent saying 'SUPPOSEDLY 12 km over the speed limit' really cracked me up, haha! What I can't figure out is not that they are slim yet stuff their faces with rich, calorific foods, but that they have a higher standard of living than UK citizens while having endless holiday time, short working weeks, and retire on high pensions way before us, too!

My guess about people's weight in France is that 1) the foods that are on offer for a decent price have far fewer additives, and are much fresher and 2) at least in the countryside, the pace of life is slower and so people are not nearly as stressed, and 3) meals are relaxing times when you get together with people and enjoy the food together. In the US, most food has a lot of non-food stuff in it - it's main purpose for those who sell it is to have a long shelf life, not to be healthy and fresh. For most people in the US, even in the home, a meal is something to wolf down as fast as possible so you can get back to work or on to your next activity. Most families don't sit down to enjoy a meal together. We've been sold an attitude about food based on profit and greed. It's really a shame. The cure? We have to vote with our dollars. If we didn't buy the awful stuff, but bought fresher, better food, food marketers would sell better food. And we'd all be healthier and slimmer.

You are cracking me up. Welcome to France. We are going through the same thing right now. It starts with resourcing. We are having trouble buying everyday items, we had a 20ft container shipped with household goods just to compensate for the lack of product not to mention the time it takes to gather. I absolutely love your house and did look at it when we were buying. When it comes to meals, you're not kidding. Breakfast, lunch, dinner that's it. I never gain weight when I am in france. If you are an American you need to carry a feed bag. And paper coffee cups and lids with you so you will be able to take your coffee with you. Don't bother asking for them. Banking is much different in france. They have rules for how much of your own money you can have access to. You have to plan your day around lunch hour(s). You either get up very early and do your errands before lunch, or you go out to lunch and do your errands after. I love to hear from another person who understands having to forage for food and supplies everyday. Hang in there. I'm told it gets better. I hope they are right. 😂

You must have been in deepest rural France because in the cities, the stores and post offices are open at lunch time and everybody does not go on holiday in August. And in my office we had 30 minutes for lunch (in Paris) and not everybody went for lunch at the time time so that work would not be disrupted. Most of what you said sounded like France 40 years ago except of course for the price of the doctor or bread and camembert. I am afraid tht the doctors' fees are going to go up to 26.50€ next year.

Interesting. Maybe Paris is different then? We are not in a very rural area, just between Saumur and Angers, so quite few business here. Someone even commended us on being able to have an electrician come by in August. Just grocery stores and Bricomarche don’t close for lunch in the area.

Some pluses and minuses for sure, but a great comparison. Not sure I could deal with the smokers though! And it is obvious that the French live much more laid back and less stressed a life than those in North America. I think the obesity factor in the USA is from all of the additives in the foods that are not in the foods in Europe. I think the healthy food is definitely a bonus.

The obesity is definitely from the additives. And no matter really if it’s ‘organic’ or not. They are full of things people should not consume.

Germany use to be the same way they had to change the store hours so that you were not just shopping on the weekends which worked for stay at home mom's but not single working people. Now they are much later and open more often. The rest is about the same except maybe the lunch hour? Oh and German beer can be had on the job and often came in the form of a VENDING machine! LOL The gas situation really has to change but will ONLY change if the people push back HARD against the government policies that have cost the increase of gas because of the sources are manipulating prices becuase France's government as well as governments around the world have CHOSEN to get their gas from expensive sources instead of cheaper ones often domestic ones. That is the case in the U.S..

I think the food in France is far healthier and nutritious because much of it is grown (and sold!) regionally, without pesticides or herbicides (like glyphosate aka RoundUp) and the farmers as well as French people in general pride themselves on the quality of their food. (Also, I think the government keeps the costs down?) If one avoids snacking all the time (ie don’t eat constantly from the time one gets up until one goes to bed) then you keep your blood sugar (glucose) levels normal. Healthy proteins, healthy full fats, and naturally fermented food (like all the delicious French cheeses) and complex carbs eaten in moderation do not cause weight gain. Weight gain is caused by eating too many super sugary and processed foods too often throughout the day. Insulin resistance caused by eating too much sugar and processed junk throughout the day is really why many Americans are overweight. French people’s lifestyles and eating habits keep their insulin levels in check! 😊 The number of baguettes on offer in the grocery store is amazing, but so too is the variety of cheeses and yogurt sold! When I visited a big grocery store in a Paris suburb, I’ll never forget there was a whole long aisle solely dedicated to different yogurts! Heaven! 😋

French drivers... oh my god. I've had cars behind me so close I could see the black heads on their noses. Ridiculous. And if you come from a US state without a driving license exchange good luck and plan on spending about 1000 EUR for the privilege of taking a theoretical exam, driving school lessons and then a road test. Doesn't matter if you've had your US license since the Eisenhower Admin. On the bright side, you can practice your Parking en marche arrière in the nearly empty car park of Leclerc Brico. Vive la France.

Hahahaha, this made me LOL. So true about not keeping distance between cars. We got the international driving permit in the US (took 5 minutes). The only caveat is that we need to renew it every year (not a problem at all). Yes, I heard those stories about exchanging driver license 😅
