Game of thrones was always heralded as having such realistic and believable villains. I guess I started to see the cracks when they turned Ramsey Bolton until merely a more over the top version of Joffrey. But the Night King is an entirely different level of terrible. Since David’ and Dan’s most recent interviews leaked to the internet we have been given insight on why so many things in the show went wrong. Many of the problems stemmed from the pairs seeming disdain for the Fantasy Genre. The idea of a fantasy villain like the night king must have seemed silly to the and perhaps ultimately this is why they put no effort into actually making him a good villain.

@HariKrishnan-kx1is
@HariKrishnan-kx1is 4 жыл бұрын
@Liz Lee I'm not talking about philosophical interpretations of the story. They tend to be quite personal and subjective. I'm talking about the narrative building aspect and essentially what keeps people interested in your story. Buildups and pay offs are important. As a writer you learn to earn the trust of the reader as quickly as possible by building up scenarios and providing meaningful resolutions. Sure you can misdirect, but if that's all that you do then the reader has no reason to trust anything that you write, it's all an elaborate bluff. The Others have been built up from the very start of the books and the show. They are definitely a meaningful part of the story, not a misdirect. Even if they are not the third act villain, which turns out to be Danny, that amount of build up just has to pay off satisfyingly. The Night King is the embodiment of the Others in the show. When he dies one of the primary narrative arcs come to an end. To treat him like a plot device just to set up cool action setpeices cheapens the amount of build up they gave him. The pay off isn't significant enough. And that's why a lot of people are left with the sense that they were cheated out of a good ending. Because there is an imbalance between build up and payoff.
@Durgenheim
@Durgenheim 4 жыл бұрын
A useless plot device at that... it didn't even matter because the Good Guys' army magically regenerated and Dany only needed one dragon to blow up all of King's Landing!
@HariKrishnan-kx1is
@HariKrishnan-kx1is 4 жыл бұрын
@Liz Lee Well the problem is the third act itself should have been at least two seasons long but the show runners were not prepared to give it that much time. I do have some sympathy for them because they were working without any original material. But it does seem like they threw in the towel towards the end. The white walker story is like a science exhibition volcano that felt like it could explode in your face but fell disappointingly flat instead. It's a glorious sideshow at best. Which is why Jon and Bran have weird incomplete character arcs, because they were our main windows to the white walker story. Quinn is spot on in this video about the show runners not having the skill or interest in handling the more magical elements of the story. Because they didn't really understand or value it, they felt like they could take it anywhere, and where they took it wasn't interesting enough.

@willmosse3684
@willmosse3684 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, absolutely. There should have been a whole season of the fight against the White Walker threat, at least. They spent seven seasons telling us the real threat was from the North, and then one episode to put that aside, and back to the humans fighting for the throne again. The overarching meta narrative of the entire show was simply ignored at the end.

Plus, even if they wanted to have the Night King be defeated in the first half of the final season, I think the least they could have done was utilize the Night King in a similar manner as Smaug’s portrayal in the Hobbit movie trilogy. These are four examples I can think of, if one would like to read below: *1.) Have the Night King parallel Daenerys, in a similar manner as Smaug paralleling Thorin.* Even though Smaug was killed off in the opening scene of the third movie, leaving Azog as the remaining villain like Cersei, he still had thematic presence through the vice of greed he represents. When Thorin starts to become possessive of Erebor’s treasure and contemptuous towards the men and elves, to the point of declaring war, there is a fear that the dwarf king is becoming another Smaug. Likewise, if the Night King was actual given a fleshed out motivation, like if he observed Westeros for thousands of years and decided to kill off all humanity to break the cycle of corruption and depravity forever, then it would tie in with the rest of the series’ themes/plots. He would become a foreshadowing of Daenerys wanting to break the wheel and end the atrocities of tyrants, only to tragically fall and become a genocidal tyrant herself. The repeated “break the cycle/wheel” line can be the equivalent to the repeated “I will not part with a single coin, not one piece of it” line. *2.) Allow the aftermath of the coming winter and Winterfell battle to yield more major consequences driving the plot, like the destruction of Esgaroth.* After Smaug was killed, Lake-town was in ruin, while the dwarves were exhausted and afraid of losing their hard won kingdom and treasure, and the elves wanted to finally get their share. This drives the desperation of the three factions and leaves them more vulnerable in dealing with Azog and Bolg. For “Game of Thrones”, this is probably even more important, since the White Walkers were supposed to represent an existential threat, from which the game of thrones is a distraction. For example, winter should still be coming after the battle of Winterfell, and Daenerys’ forces should be visibly decimated in the following episodes. All of the other episodes could show the whole south being covered in heavy snow, and the threat of cold, starvation, and depleted soldiers increases the stakes of ending the war as soon as possible, plus Daenerys’ desperation to get her way through more extreme and violent actions. Even if the Night King was to be killed off, perhaps the plot could have had a twist, where the White Walkers generals can still live independent of their creator. This could allow a large group to retreat back up north and still be looming threat by the season finale, with the need to finish them off providing a new reason why it ends with Jon Snow going north. *3.) Let the Night King have time to shine as a character, who even has some interactions with the protagonists.* Smaug is even less human than the Night King, literally speaking, and just as akin to a destructive force of nature. But eventually, Smaug does share some memorable exchanges of dialogue with Bilbo, the dwarves, and Bard that give him charisma and nuance, without taking away from his malevolent inhuman qualities. It also helped that these interactions established Smaug as a villain who is vain, powerful, boastful, and willing to toy with his victims. So it feels in character when Smaug accidentally exposes his weak point to Bard, but is made oblivious by his perceived invincibility. Likewise, the Night King and White Walkers are implied to know how to speak languages and negotiate, who could give an opportunity for dialogue with Jon Snow, Bran, etc. Maybe the interaction between the Night King and Bran could establish why he is so fixated on him personally, to the point of wanting to kill Bran himself and risk exposing himself. *4.) Have the Night King’s death itself be climactic and make sense, like Smaug’s.* The Hobbit book and movies have Smaug be killed by Bard the Bowman simply protecting his home, instead of the main protagonists invested in the journey from the start like Bilbo, Gandalf, or Thorin. One could argue that having Arya kill the Night King instead of Jon Snow, Bran, etc. is a similar move. But with “The Hobbit”, there is more build-up to Bard taking down Smaug, the book has Bilbo contribute to Smaug’s demise by talking about his chest’s weak point, the rules were clearly established and left consistent, plus the movies add a whole action scene dedicated to the dwarves confronting Smaug themselves and trying their own plan to kill him. Likewise, even if Jon Snow is not going to be the one to slay the Night King, despite all the personal history they have, there could still have been at least some confrontation between them, where Jon can make it even easier for Arya to kill the Night King (like damaging a piece of his frontal armor to leave an opening for Arya to stab). Also, if they wanted Arya’s assassination attempt to make sense, I think they should have at least had Arya change her appearance into a Wight to get past all of his minions, which is actually similar to a part in the books, where an instructor of the Faceless Men has his face become skeletal with worms crawling out.

Pippin and Sauron actually have an exchange in the RoTK novel: In a low hesitating voice Pippin began again.... 'I saw a dark sky, and tall battlements,' he said. 'And tiny stars. It seemed very far away and long ago, yet hard and clear. Then the stars went in and out - they were cut off by things with wings. Very big, I think, really; but in the glass they looked like bats wheeling round the tower. I thought there were nine of them. One began to fly straight towards me, getting bigger and bigger.... 'I tried to get away, because I thought it would fly out; but when it had covered all the globe, it disappeared. Then he came. He did not speak.... He just looked, and I understood. '"So you have come back? Why have you neglected to report for so long?" 'I did not answer. He said: "Who are you?" I still did not answer, but it hurt me horribly..., so I said: "A hobbit." 'Then suddenly he seemed to see me, and he laughed at me. It was cruel.... I struggled. But he said: "Wait a moment! We shall meet again soon. Tell Saruman that this dainty is not for him. I will send for it at once. Do you understand? Say just that!" 'Then he gloated over me. I felt I was falling to pieces. No, no! I can't say any more. I don't remember anything else.'

I actually made a similar comment shortly after Season 7 aired, where I imagined scenarios of Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze leading the White Walkers as the Night King. I’ll do my best to retype them below from memory... *1.) Night King leaves his icy mark on Bran in the vision.* “Stay cool, Bird Boy!” *2.) Night King and horsemen appear overlooking Hardhome.* “Tonight’s forecast, a freeeeze is coming!” *3.) Night King uses Viserion’s icy flame breath to shatter the Wall’s support structure.* “Always winterize your pipes.” *4.) Night King sees his faithful lieutenant killed by Jon Snow.* “FROSTY?!” *5.) During the battle at the lake.* “What killed all the dragons? The Ice Age!” *throws javelin at Viserion* *6.) Night King confronting his makers in the Three-Eyed Raven’s cave.* “I’m afraid... that my condition has left me cooold... to your pleas of mercy!” *kills Children of the Forest* *7.) Massacre of Hardhome reaches its peak.* “Alright everyone, chill! Chill! Chill!” *8.) Jon Snow makes a mad dash to the Night King, only to fall through the ice into the water.* “You are not sending me to the cooler!” *9.) Imagines a hypothetical ending where the White Walkers have successfully reached King’s Landing, the Night King is now celebrating his victory on the Iron Throne with slippers made of Ghost and Nymeria, and all of our heroes are now a choir of Wights.* “Sing! Sing! Come on, sing! Louder! Come on! Sing! Sing! Sing!”

I think it would have been perfectly fine, if it turned out that killing an Other/White Walker only destroys the particular Wights he animated, and the Night King’s subordinate generals could still exist independently of him (with the logic that they are still living sentient beings unlike the Wight minions). When I was outlining my own version of the GoT ending for fun, I made that an actual plot point and even had a moment foreshadowing this, where Tyrion questions Jon’s hypothesis that the Night King’s death alone will also instantly vanquish the other White Walkers, saying “When you take a goat out to be slaughtered, does its sh*t turn back into grass?” At least then, it could allow the death of the Night King to deal a notable blow to the army of the dead (like disabling the reanimated Viserion and a huge chunk of the Wights), without him being a walking off switch for the entire Long Night. It would actually make the Night King look smart too, for going out of his way to find children like Craster’s sons to turn into White Walkers, since they could theoretically carry on the torch if he died. But then the show makes the Night King’s plan to use Craster’s sons look like a complete waste of time, since the subordinate generals cannot do crap other than be mini-self-destruct buttons to defend the ultimate self-destruct button.

As Quinn said, that GRRM quote basically explains everything wrong with the Night King. In a series that isn't your typical epic fantasy series, he was a typical fantasy big bad, an evil overlord or dark lord. He even fails in that regard since he was taken out rather quickly and isn't even memorable like Sauron, Voldemort, and Palpatine.
@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 4 жыл бұрын
Even for a “Dark Lord” fantasy villain, it is still possible to incorporate/portray him in a way that allows for moral ambiguity, conflicts more layered than a simple “one good side vs. one bad side”, and a three-dimensional characterization. The most recent example I can think of is the portrayal of Dracula in Netflix’s “Castlevania” adaptation, which is one way the Night King could have potentially turned out, if he was given similar fleshing-out as many human antagonists and tied better thematically with the rest of the series.

Absolutely on point. I think my biggest gripe with the Night King was how absurd his death was. There's absolutely no narrative throughline for Arya killing him; it comes out of nowhere and MAYBE has one or two throwaway lines talking about it from characters afterwards. Jon killing him makes sense, it has foreshadowing, it has thematic weight to it as Jon being the representation of good and NK being the representation of bad. But Arya?! She's just some bland nobody who never even knew about the NK until, what, season 7? I'm annoyed at how GoT from season 4 onwards still makes me this mad. It's so stupid, I should be able to just leave it, but goddamn they screwed it up so bad from something that was so bloody good in season 1-3. D&D are hacks.

@ajs1031 wasn't denying there were plot points leading up to Valyrian Steel being significant, merely highlighting dragonfire; which at the time could be argued was as powerful if not more had no effect. Well other than a sarcastic glimpse into TNK's humanity. Still visually spectacular, with disregard for the plot, symbolism or even an explanation for the 'teleportation' which marred the end of what should have been beyond epic IMO.

@ajs1031 True, but weaknesses like those are generally cop-outs because the writers couldn't figure out a plot element that would organically place their characters in a losing scenario in the beginning of the plot. Can't figure out how to create a threat for superman? Boom, kryptonite. I feel like the book Others wouldn't have a simple weakness like valyrian steel. Or at least, even if they do, it likely won't be enough to completely defeat them.

This would have been an interesting ending to me: First, the Night King decimates Last Hearth and a maester from Last Hearth manages to get a raven off, warning everyone at Winterfell of what has happened, the size of the Night King's army, the dragon, etc. They decide to retreat from Winterfell because they do not have the numbers or the advantage with the landscape either. They decide to retreat to Moat Cailin, having united all of the houses to support the fight against the Others, except for Cersei but Jaime has taken the bulk of the Lannister army with him to Winterfell. Before they can all evacuate, the Night King hits them with a surprise attack with his dragon, flying high and using the cover of darkness catch them by surprise. Jon and Daenerys spring into action, but Jon proves to be more of a liability than an asset being a novice to dragon riding and nearly hits Dang with dragon fire. But the Night King is only buying time. He has not brought his army because it would have taken too long for his plans. He has animated the thousands of kings of winter from the crypts. Instead of people already being down there when they reanimate, the corpses emerge catching everyone off guard and killing many before people realize what is happening. They overwhelm everyone, but Dany manages to out maneuver the Night King, nearly burning him, and fending him off long enough for a few members of the main cast that survived to escape on Drogon and Rhaegal, along with a few dozen people on horse back and on foot. They retreat to Moat Cailin. ALl of the banners are united at Moat Cailin, bringing provisions from all 7 kingsdoms to support the large host. They mourn their lost, lick their wounds, they train, fortify their defenses and await the fight to come. But the Night King throws his full strength at them. They fight valiantly but each White Walkers has hundreds of years of battle experience and are not easily killed, it requires sacrifice to kill them. People attacking them all at once, many dying in the process until someone gets a stab in, until only The Night King remains and he himself seems impossible to kill, easily slicing through people, and not allowing himself to be crowded. Jon has a boss fight with the Night King but the Night King toys with him. During the fight Melisandre, has them burn her alive, restoring things to those the The Lord of Light sees fit to restore. Jaime tries to join the fight with Jon, double teaming the Night King but he is knocked unconscious. Jon keeps fighting. Jaime start to feel an intense pain while he is out and starts screaming and he passes out again. Jon is losing the fight and is growing tired but the Night King is not tiring. He pleads with the Night King, screaming what do want! Why are you killing us! The Night King speaks "Valar Morghulis" "All Men Must Die" "Valar Dohaeris" "All Men Must Serve" the realization is that the children gave the Others that purpose. Kill all men so that they can reclaim their land and all men once dead must must serve the army of the dead as a corpse. Jaime wakes, he sees Jon on the ground wounded, Jon's sword is on the ground close to the Night King. The Night King picks up the sword and stands Jon in the heart with it. Killing him. Jaime sees all of this,gets up and stumbles trying to get to Jon. He falls on his sword hand, HIS SWORD HAND, the faint sound of the Rains of Castamere plays in the background. Jaime makes his way towards Jon, to pick up the sword out of Jon to fight the Night King to the death. The sword is covered with ice. When Jaime pulls the sword out, it lights on fire. The sword has become Lightbringer. He fights the Night King and takes a mortal would in order to gain an opening, killing the Night the King. Jaime is Azor Ahai. But succumbs to his wound and dies in the snow. Many main characters are dead. I have more to this, with more detail and a conclusion, detailing the aftermath of the War for the Dawn. But this is the general idea. This also just based on what the show set up, the idea of the Night King goes against GRRMs beliefs about writing. There is no Night King clear cut villian in the books.

Some great dialogue there and it’s not in the book. Arya and Tywin instead of Bolton. Brianna vs the Hound. Ned vs Jaimie. A lot of the stuff with Bronn in the early seasons. Martin actually said Bronn is way better in the show then he made him in the books. Just some I can think of off the top of my head. Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of things they messed up from the books especially in the latter seasons. The battle at the end of the first book was left out because of budget. Lord Inquisitor I think that Martin gave them the end outline, where Euron is possibly the ultimate bad guy, season 4, when he left, and D&D decided to add the Night King, to replace him, because they hadn’t set any of the groundwork for Euron. Then he just turned into a generic bad guy. Then because D&D were in a rush they didn’t bother giving him a personality because it was important to get scenes of the actors emoting. Some fanfiction does a bit more justice to the character. My particular favourite for his backstory comes from 'An Empire of Ice and Fire' by an author called Longclaw1-6, although that particular story still doesn't give an explanation of the spirals. Worth a read.

A little backstory or lore and maybe some dialogue from the Night King, or at least some revelations about his motive could have saved season 8. Alas, that didn't happen.

it’s so funny to me that d&d thought the long night, which is supposed to be the night to end all nights and last ten thousand years, was actually just about a pretty spooky night and then the sun comes out

I actually like how they keep the night king mysterious. Nothing is scarier than the unknown and the night king has a sort of hplovecraft feel to him that I appreciate.

Did you guys hear that WoW supposedly comes out this year? I'm actually really scared. I wanna trust George, and I (think) know the writing will be brilliant (and nothing like the show writing) but the show messed me up so bad. :/ I expected all my faves to die but it was their *character*, the core of their being that died - what if something like this will actually happen in the books? I'm surviving on Quinn's calm and intelligent observations, but my own brain is a little stupid and it's afraid. (edited for spelling mistakes)

I was ok with the little backstory they gave us, but it created more questions. It made it clear the north beyond the Wall wasn’t always frozen. Did the last of the Children of the Forest remain beyond the Wall because mankind was still more of a danger to them than their own deadly creation that turned on them?? Why would the Three Eyed Raven be kept beyond the Wall and trained there instead of at the aisle of Faces out of reach of the Night King? And if the wights were placed in the ground at the entrance to the Three Eyed Raven’s cave to prevent a new Three Eyed Raven from being trained, then the Night King always knew where the Three Eyed Raven was and why wouldn’t he just kill him before Bran arrived?

Yeah, the build up of Bran's story and the night king was brilliant, full of foreboding and excitement, only for the end not to live up to the promise of the beginning. A lot of films in recent times have suffered this fate of poor writing, Star Wars giving good examples. I think it's easier to set up a dramatic story line than it is to give it a satisfying ending.

In my opinion The Night King is extremely cool all the way up until he dies to Arya, the set up with him was done great and the danger felt real, it’s that ending of 8x03 that really hurts his arc.

Just nitpicking here, but Sauron did speak in the first LOTR movie. We hear him speak to Saruman through the palantir "Build me an army worthy of Mordor" -- which is one of the most terrifying things to hear! He also spoke to Frodo "There is no life in the void, only death" and "you cannot hide, I see you".

Well actually... Sauron does speak :0... not in a actually understandable way, but through the ring (the whispering voice) and i think to remember he also speaks with Saruman at one point.

By the end of season 7 I wanted the white walkers to kill everyone and claim the iron throne because they were the only characters left who hadn’t been ruined by D&D’s terrible writing. Then season 8 happened and one of the most terrifying fantasy villains of all time became a minor nuisance easily defeated.
