Arguably the most macro-appealing of the Godzilla franchise, this film has some great kaiju moments, and this video has been edited to remove all the plots and sub-plots and mood-settings and stuff, so that it presents only the most satisfying scenes.
That is not to say that the full film is not worth watching. To the contrary, it is a good evening's entertainment. You can find it on amazon.com as "Return of Godzilla" (1984). Be sure you get the original Japanese version, though. If you see Raymond Burr's name in the description, run away.

For me personally, this Godzilla is a lot more menacing then say, Shin. I think that is largely thanks to the way this movie was shot mostly at night, the ominous soundtrack, and that roar.

Heisei is badass. Dark, scary and a terrifying roar that should've never been abandoned. Throwback 54 vibe. Amazingly, this was underrated, but It stuck with me more than any other film. For 1985 the special effects were pretty damn good. His footsteps were very thunderous and the walk was just badass. His eyes were very vicious looking. His first appearance at the Nuclear Powerplant gave me nightmares as a child lol. The birds flying from the trees as his growling and footsteps can be heard approaching. I really think this is the best one to this day. It is the scariest. Can't forget the music. Although this is clearly 84. I still think 1985 was more polished. They cut alot cringeworthy scenes. Especially when showing people at ground level. 85 cut alot of those scenes and kept him kind of moving along.

Godzilla's Personality in the Heisei series: In the films of the Heisei era, Godzilla is an animal with at least semi-sapience that stumbles upon human civilization without any malicious intent, only destroying man-made structures or obstacles like buildings when the humans provoke him, or, when dead-set on arriving at a certain location. He is also somewhat curious, as he did not immediately attack Mechagodzilla, rather attempting to communicate with it, and looking more confused than angry when Mechagodzilla used its Mega Buster Beam. Only then did Godzilla retaliate. This is a stark contrast to the Showa era where Godzilla was formally presented as a destructive force of nature without any malicious intent initially in both Godzilla and its sequel: Godzilla Raids Again, before transitioning to a full on both anti-heroic and heroic figure later on as the era progressed. He is shown to have a vengeful side in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah as he directly attacks and kills the soldier who left him on the island to be mutated, and in a solemn moment even sheds a tear as if in lamentation as to what he has become. Before Godzilla destroyed the Shindo Heavy Industry headquarters, he hesitated upon sighting Yasuaki Shindo in a moment of recognition, and even tearfully roared before obliterating him and the building with his atomic breath. Godzilla is also shown to care a lot for his adopted son Godzilla Junior, as he protected him from SpaceGodzilla, and grieves for him after transferring energy in a failed attempt to revive him during the events of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

Well to be fair towards Burr: He was told that they were trying to add a lighter tone to the dark, gothic film and that the writers had given him lots of funny lines. He turned them down cold, saying he took Godzilla's Japanese nuclear subtext very seriously, as it was portrayed in both the original and this film, and that he would only perform in a serious role. Also i do have to admit, that some edits in the american version are a bit more.. apealing. To be preciese, the american version both heavily imply, that both the guard at the NPP and the tramp later got trampled by Godzilla. Of course, overall the original version is preferable.

Actually Burning Godzilla is from the Alternate Present Timeline. This Godzilla was originally a Godzillasaurus and erased from history before the bombs went off and replaced with King Ghidorah in 1991. The Burning Godzilla was created from a Nucular sub intentionally by humanity to combat King Ghidorah and ends up being a bigger problem the both this Godzilla and King Ghidorah combined.

However, a russian submarine in the Bering sea crashed and mutated the dead Godzillasaurus into Godzilla 1984. He attacks but is sealed in a volcano. He is then released in the biollante movie. Godzilla is poisoned in that movie and goes to the spot he was mutated by the Sunni the Bering sea. I was searching youtube forever trying to figure out what Godzilla movie terrified me as a child. It was the camera angle, effects and it felt real. I used to hide, close my eyes and freaked out thinking it was real lol.

当時の撮影で、ゴジラから逃げる人達(モブ)の先頭あたりに、似たようなシャツ姿同士の人達が居て、その一人が岡田斗司夫さんそっくりでしたが、まさかご本人とお仲間さん達かな?

The fuel tank explosions always seemed particularly scary to me. It’s not the same as a nuke, but fuel explosions produce some pretty impressive fireballs and the heat can be felt a good distance away.

I like what Raymond Burr says at the end of Godzilla 1985 when he describes Godzilla as, "that strangely innocent & tragic" monster. That, and the way Godzilla dies makes me cry. I think the movie would be missing something w/o those lines, so I disagree about running away from Godzilla 1985 w/ Raymond Burr.

Speaking purely on macro-appealing terms, the best scene remains the crowd-trampling one on the '98 film IMO. But that whole parking lot going under Godzilla's flat foot in '84 comes right next, no doubt!
@RogueMegawolf
@RogueMegawolf 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but if you look at it closely, the '98 Godzilla didn't actually squish anyone. They all got outta the way of his feet when they came down. Zero body count. I guess the filmmakers were trying to keep their monster "sympathetic."

More like keeping the film PG13 :) But yeah, there's no onscreen people trampling, I had noticed that too. But still I love how his feet crash down on the crowd, IMO there's some trampling happening there, even though such is just suggested rather than explicit. But well, to each their own, I guess!

Rogue Megawolf but if you watch that scene orig00.deviantart.net/51e6/f/2017/097/6/9/ezgif_3_48e03e219f_by_myuutsuu85-db50gzn.gif really closely, you notice that there is NO WAY for this to happen without anybody being flattened. Just look at those two just a few feet behind that umbrella on the ground. As the foot comes down, the umbrella is crushed under what would be the heel. It would be impossible for those behind the umbrella to survive this scene. I mean if we look at it realisticly.

I like the way they made the suit for Godzilla 1984 and 85 it's way better than that cgi I don't like the cgi I like the old original it's way better the foot steps was great the roar was 10 time better than the new Godzilla roar and the suit looks good from Godzilla 1984 this Godzilla was great no cgi I wish they would have brought the old original Godzilla suit back to the big screen this Godzilla suit for the big screen was excellent this is my favorite Godzilla design I don't like the new Godzilla design it just doesn't look like Godzilla I like the way raymond burr did the speech from Godzilla 1985 it was a odd speech but it was sad at the end raymond burr passed away but he was a great actor for the movie the music score was excellent I enjoyed the movie very well I kinda miss the suit design for Godzilla they said the same suit was stolen and it never return and seen again but it still my favorite Godzilla design

not to be a know it all, but shouldn't the radiation godzilla emits kill these people alone? the last scene shows him at spitting distance with the main characters. hell they'd be dying from the rads Godzilla is emitting alone since he's essentially a walking, roaring, destructive, living nuclear reactor.
