Here is another good one: Ни то, ни другое. This means, "neither." It basically negates "that" and the "other".

That is my problem too! I just learned 'friend' and thought 'different' was a case used on it. How very confusing yes indeed.

I think the best translation is "not the same". And words "different", "other", "another" are just synonyms.

Great explanation! I thought of another example but with the female conjugation (Это другая сторона города). Could you provide another example with the female variant?

OK. Here’s some examples, I hope will never be usefull for you =) _Nominative_ : Мне нужна *другая* жена, кажется эта сломалась. (I need *another* wife, this seems to be broken). _Genitive_ : Меня не волнует, что я не могу прийти на похороны в шортах, у меня нет *другой* одежды. (I don’t care that I can’t go to the funeral wearing shorts. I don’t have any *other* outfit) _Dative_ : Если ты не собираешься есть этого опоссума, то я отдам его *другой* женщине (If you ain’t going to eat this possum, then I’m gonna give it to *another* woman. _Accusative_ : Подожди, ты не можешь пырнуть его этой отверткой. Я найду *другую* . (Wait, you can’t stab him with this screwdriver. I’ll go find *another* one) _Instrumental_ : Хорошо, а теперь попробуй *другой* рукой. (Ok, now try it with *another* hand) _Prepositional_ : Это хорошо, но давай подумаем о *другой* возможности заработать 20 долларов (It’s good, but let's think about some *other* way to get 20 bucks)

Does друг друга have a literal meaning or is it just a fixed phrase? I'm assuming the second друга is genitive but I'm not sure how that comes to mean "each other" rather than "a friend's friend" or something.

Друг друга means each other. For example, they love each other (они любят друг друга). It doesn't matter, if you speak about male of female. They even don't really have to be friends. You can also say They hate each other (они ненавидят друг друга). Но можно сказать "друг друга" (a friend's friend). Like, my friend's friend got a promotion (друг моего друга получил повышение).

Phrase like "Друг друга сказал, что любит пить пиво" can exist, but in that case people usually use additional explanatory words like "ОДИН друг МОЕГО друга сказал, что ОН любит пить пиво". So "Друг друга" means Each other in 95% of cases. It really depends of context
