How Hard Should You Workout To Build Muscle? (START DOING THIS!)

Not sure how hard you should be training? This video will help you understand the difference between overtraining and making excuses.
A lot of what I cover in this video has to do with training to failure which people have differing opinions on but to me there is a clear right answer. When it comes to building muscle you're far better of pushing yourself too hard and having to back off then trying to "train smarter".
Let me know what video you want next and get after it!

Make your own Rope, I did with this video. Its not my video, just the 1 I used to make my own because I had 1 like Ryan's and those rubber bumpers broke. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZtWClcyqvbalaHk.html AFTER you make your knots make sure to melt the frayed ends with a lighter. I made 2 ropes with a quick trip to Home Depot, 1 short and 1 longer for overhead extensions. I have my own home gym and use these ropes all the time and they have not failed me. I used the same yellow rope the guy makes in the video.

I used to live in a small village in Yemen, every day our job was to take the flour sugar etc bags to all the villages because there is no roads for cars. So every morning from 4am to about 1pm we would go to where the car can reach and start taking these 50-100lb bags(flour and sugar in yemen doesnt come in small containers) and walk to each village and come back and go to the next village. Every day we would walk about 5 miles going through fields and sides of mountains. We would eat bread and honey with eggs at 10am, meat and rice at 2 pm and usually no dinner unless it was like fruit or something. We had no candy, pop, artifical foods etc. We never felt overtrained and not a single person was overwright even by 10 lbs. this was my life for 4 years and I loved every second of it. I love the gym but you will NEVER reach your potential in a gym because you know consciously or subconsciously that at any moment you can just drop the weight or just walk out the gym.

Ever since I discovered Ryan's mindset, I decided to try and adopt his mindset of pushing your ass to failure. I would do drop sets on my regular weights first, then once I was dead on those drop sets, I would start mechanical drop sets and do drop sets on my mechanical drop sets... Must say, I am finally getting that growth Ryan's talking about... But I also hate leg day that much more...

Great video as always Ryan. I was taught that failure can also mean form, so if your form screws up at say, rep eight, that’s a sign to drop weight, or switch technique and rep out. Then continue repping until the muscle gives out. Prior to this I thought failure was simply not being able to lift the weight.

I am 65 and have worked out my entire adult life and absolutely love it. Work out partners came and went and I am the last man standing. I can't imagine not working out...ever. They will need to pry the dumbbells from my cold dead hands. Working out has meant a lot more to me than just having muscle - which has been a positive for sure, but it also has gotten me through some tough times cause I have never worked out and not felt mentally better.....never. I admit though I had sort of given up on building more muscle. Then I found this channel. Dude you are crazy inspiring even for this old guy. Starting a new routine today in my home gym going at it with higher reps and working to failure with good form. Excited to get into the gym....yeah buddy !!!

I respectfully disagree that one should not be worried about over-training. I've been working out with weights for 39 years now, and I have over-trained many times. It actually can occur quite easily if one has a decent level of will-power and works out to failure consistently. I fully agree with Ryan that most people I see do not work out nearly hard enough to maximize gains, but please don't let this underestimate the real risk of over-training. I have generally found that the more intense one trains, the more recovery time one needs (especially if one is not "enhanced"). So really blasting the s#it out of a muscle group during a workout can lead to the need for more recovery days between workouts for that body part, which can be a trade-off.

I was under the impression that there was no way I could over train because guys like you said it's impossible. But couple low calories, high stress work, and killing myself in the gym cuz I thought there was no way I could hurt myself, I really got messed up. And I worked how intensely 7 days a week until failure, and I stuck to my 1900 calorie diet, and my job was stressful everyday. I killed myself, and now I'm paying for it still.

You never really said what happened. Overtraining means reaching a plateau in muscle response whereby a short period of R&R is needed for further progress. Sounds more like you damaged/pulled a tendon or ligament without listening to your body, since you are still recovering after one year.

@fabianvargas3571 3 жыл бұрын
Well but you kinda took it to the extreme. You say you worked 7 days a week with a moderate calorie diet. So you didnt had rest days, that alone is crazy, and add in that your calorie intake seems not ideal. Workout hard, but have your rest days and eat a little above maintance calories.
@zboy2855
@zboy2855 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but what you're describing isn't what Ryan was talking about. 7 days a week is ridiculous, you should have programmed at least 1-2 rest days per week. And trying to build muscle while in a severe calorie deficit makes no sense. Nor does thinking there's no way to hurt yourself in the gym, if you're not paying attention to proper mechanical form. If you messed yourself up, that's either your own fault or whatever godawful trainer programmed that type of regimen for you. But still not what Ryan was talking about in this video, so it's a red herring.

@@av8orCH-47 yeah I've been in corrections for a while, I started at a state prison and let me tell you being able to talk someone down when they've eaten a big ol bowl of dont give a fuck is one of the most important skills I've learned, especially when you are alone with 80-100 inmates... but I've also got a bit of muscle on me and that might help a little lol

After you graduate and you're in the street it will be better to train AFTER your shift. Trust me! As the rookie you're gonna get the shit shift and the shit neighborhood and it's better to not be weak from gym fatigue. You'll be more tired after your 12 your shift so it will take more will power but it will be safer. You don't want some antifa punk overpowering you cause you're exhausted or cramping from your workout.

I use to be in the Army, so training until muscle failure is like second nature to me. I was doing the whole 10-12 reps a set for a while since I'm getting older, but recently I've been getting back into training until failure, but this time sticking to that mind/muscle connection. Appreciate your videos man!

I killed my forearms last week, I've never slept more uncomfortable in my life. Mind you, I served in the Iraq War where RPG were falling out the sky like someone throwing baby powder, and I slept thru that. And I couldn't sleep after working forearms. I also got the idea from this guy.

So I have a question on that. Let’s say you’re working arms, and one arm can do more reps than the other arm. What’s going to happen if you consistently do more reps with the stronger arm? It seems like the stronger arm would get consistently stronger and bigger than the weaker arm. Is it important to do equal reps for each arm even though one gets pushed to failure and the other does not?
@duaner999
@duaner999 3 жыл бұрын
@@dinohuntr851 I'd say that you should stop both sides when the weakest one fails. It will get more stimuli, hence more growth, and will eventually catch up with the other one. Makes sense?

Miiike honestly? Not a whole lot. I went up to 405 for a set of 6, then did 8-10- failure minus a plate each set working my way down. I’m 6’5 and lanky at 220 so someone squatier could lift more for sure, but I don’t burn out right after my “last set” I work my way down to 135. Then if I’m feeling froggy I’ll switch to rack pulls and do a similar tho lighter set.

Definitely do on ur compound moves. Try this.. After ur last work set drop 20% for 6 reps then drop another 20% for 10 reps with no more than 1 min rest between these last sets.. So u might do Squats or Bench for 3x5 at 100kg then 6x80 then 10x60. If doing 531 I might add Rest Pause before the drop sets so I'd be doing 1xAMRAP@100 and say I got 6 reps then I'd do 2xRP sets @ 100 with 30-40sec rest and get 2 reps.. 30sec rest and another 2 reps then within 60s 6x80 and 10x60. I've done this on all lifts but fatigue set in real quick! Choose what body part u want to grow. Now I'm doing just on Upper body. U can do on one or more exercises in a workout but the more u do the quicker u can overtrain and fatigue. This Week I did RP + DS on Bench and Pendlays and just DS on Incl Press. Later in the week I just did RP + DS on OHP. All other lifts I do sets across or just with RP sets. I always go to positive failure and always use spotter bars in a rack for squats and bench.

It wasn't even heavyweight maybe 205 lbs. Then last year at 55 y/o like a dummy overtraining in HIIT class ripped out left pec doing push-ups! I had surgery for that one too. I was devastated gotta get back to the basics.
