The Arrow, also known as Hetz, is a family of anti-ballistic missiles created to meet Israel's need for a more effective defense against ballistic missiles compared to the MIM-104 Patriot system. Unlike the Patriot, it's not designed for intercepting military aircraft or short-range artillery rockets. Arrow 2, part of this system, is capable of intercepting missiles at high altitudes above the stratosphere, ensuring that any potential nuclear, chemical, or biological threats do not spread over Israel. This missile defense system, jointly funded and developed by Israel and the United States, was initiated in 1986. Its upper-tier segment, Arrow 3, became operational on January 18, 2017. Arrow 3 boasts higher speeds, extended range, and operates at greater altitudes compared to Arrow 2. It intercepts ballistic missiles during the space-flight portion of their trajectory. Interestingly, Israeli Space Agency officials have suggested Arrow 3 could potentially be utilized as an anti-satellite weapon, a capability few countries possess.
