I know I have come to this video rather late but I would like to add something to the mix. I accidently got a great canvas by getting a resin coat completely wrong. All is not lost if some silicone oil remains as it produces a "wet look" canvas and the effect is stunning. I applied the resin and came back to it next day in the belief that it would be ruined, but to my amazement actually the puddling of the resin gave a unique wet look as if you were viewing through a window with rain on the glass.

Thank you for posting! This is a big help! I didn't realize you could use glass cleaner and was told to use Dawn Dish Soap which takes forever to dry! This is a simple, very effective method to seal silicone pours. Probably the best method I've seen. Easy to follow instructions and cost efficient! Excellent! Thanks again!! BTW- I LOVE the painting!! It came out just beautiful!

No problem, thanks so much for watching. I'm so glad this was helpful. I used to use dish soap and cornstarch to clean the oil off and it took forever. It made me stop using silicone oil for a while. Once I discovered this method I started using the silicone oil again and now I love using it again. 🤗💙

I'm so glad to stumble on the video linked to this one. I've been using dawn dish soap and a nail scrubber and basically going to town as dawn removes oil so well. Only problem w that method is i end up with a drenched canvas that then needs to dry thoroughly. I was holding on to my keeper paintings, on a sunny day washing by the batch and letting them air dry, I'm not a fan of relying on good weather especially in Chicago 🤣 Recently saw someone mention windex to remove silicone before varnishing but didn't go into too much detail about how many times is best. Thank you for this!
@naptimecreations
@naptimecreations 2 жыл бұрын
Most definitely, everything is weather permitting here too 😆 after I filmed this video I actually tried to seal my paintings made with silicone oil only using mod podge and it worked nicely too. I skipped the windex and just went in with the mod podge. The mod podge alone worked great. Also rustoleum gloss clear spray paint works nice too. 3 coats letting each coat dry, will do the trick too. No windex necessary for the spray paint either 😁

I LOVE this painting!! And the excellent tips as well! I've been making coasters and resining them, but ALWAYS have trouble with fish eyes on any that I use silicon oil in. I've been using corn starch, then 90% rubbing alcohol and then a little Dawn dishsoap to try to clean them off before resining, but I can never fully get the oil off and always have to do multiple layers of resin (cleaning the coasters with Dawn dishsoap and rubbing alcohol between each layer) I've never seen the mod podge sealing technique! I'm going to try adding in that step (and the windex too!) next time! Thank you SO much!
@naptimecreations

Thank you so much and thanks for watching. I hope you give it a try. I used to use the cornstarch method and kept having the fish eye problem. Some of my coasters would end up with 4 coats of resin because of fish eyes. So then I tried using the mod podge and it worked like a charm. Just make sure to do at least 3 nice thick coats of the mod podge 😊 let me know how it goes 😊

I did notice that was a painting you did with your pre-mix paint which always dries with a gloss. Normally I would not spray my regular acrylic painting with Windex to get off the silicone but for the pre-mix it’s a great idea. Hopefully some will not try that on their regular acrylic paintings. I’m not sure exactly what it would do but it might leave marks from the Windex. The Mod podge is a great idea. I love that painting you did also. That’s one of my favorites.❤️👍

@naptimecreations

Thanks so much for watching, I hope you give it a try. Let me know how it goes 🤗 Before my next top coat. I will sand it lightly by hand with a 320 grit sandpaper. Then I'll clean it off well with some isopropyl alcohol and do my clear top coat. I'm also going to add a few coats of mod podge to those missing spots just to make sure it wasn't the silicone oil that caused them. I'll make sure to avoid these areas while sanding.

Thanks for watching, the mod podge seals the silicone oil in. If you use silicone oil and you don't clean it off completely (it's difficult to clean off) you need to seal it before you resin your painting or you will end up with huge pits of missing resin. The oil repels the resin.

Thanks for watching, It was 30 days before I did the glass cleaner process. I also discovered clear gloss spray paint works just as good as the mod podge for sealing. I just haven't had a chance to make a tutorial. I used no glass cleaner just took paper towels and dabbed them On the piece to absorb any oil. Then I sprayed it with 3 coats of rustoleum gloss clear spray paint. Letting each coat dry before I did the next one. It works well 😁

For the varnish, I actually like to use spray. I use rustolem gloss 2x clear coat spray. You can get it from Walmart or home depot, lowes, etc. It works really well and I spray it on my pieces outside on a nice day, use 2-3 coats. Letting each coat dry before I add the next coat. I Also wear my respirator when I use spray it on. It can get stinky.

Your work is beautiful! You are very informative and move along quickly! My question to you is how do you clean ceramic tile that has silicone? When I have done it with glass cleaner or other products it takes off the paint. How can I prevent that ? Thanks for sharing your expertise!
@naptimecreations
@naptimecreations 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, that means so much to me. Thanks for watching. Sorry to hear that is happening when you use cleaner to clean the oil off. What I would do is skip the cleaner. Take a plain paper towel and press it on the surface of your dry painting. Try to get the paper towel to absorb as much silicone oil as possible. Then apply 3 or 4 coats of mod podge. Letting each layer dry all the way before you add another layer. Don't forget to do the edges and sides of your tile. After all your coats of mod podge are dry you can do your resin top coat or varnish.

Hi Tish: Just wondering what does the Mod Podge do for the painting? This painting looks so amazing. Thank you
@naptimecreations
@naptimecreations 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much and thanks for watching. The mod podge acts like a sealant incase any of the silicone oil didn't get cleaned off. The mod podge layers seal it in so the resin top coat goes on nicely. If there's silicone residue left on the canvas it will cause fish eyes, craters, pits on your resin top coat or varnish. The silicone oil repels it.

Thanks so much for watching🤗 I personally haven't noticed that it yellows over time. I have heard people say that too. It HAS ammonia, water, and vinegar would that be safe to use? I've seen other artists that use rubbing alcohol or Dawn dish soap with paper towel. But they do have a little color just a very little on their paper towels. But I saw no color on your paper towel from the glass cleaner.

Thank you ❤❤❤ that's so cool you make your own glass cleaner. Yours should definitely work, mine the walmart brand has ammonia in it and none of the paint came off my canvas. Yay 🤗 thanks for watching ❤

what is mod podge used for?
@naptimecreations
@naptimecreations 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The mod podge is used to seal in any silicone oil that may not have been cleaned off with the windex 😊

What's the purpose of the modge podge?
@naptimecreations
@naptimecreations 3 жыл бұрын
The mod podge seals any silicone oil that may be left on the canvas. Anything you make with silicone oil needs to be sealed or you will get craters / pits / fish eyes in your resin finish. Silicone oil repels resin. The mod podge prevents that from happening because it's a sealer. Thanks for watching 🤗💙

I followed your instructions but had to stop using the window cleaner as it started to reactivate the paint which was a pour on tiles and was painted 3 weeks ago. Now not sure what to do.

You can skip the windex and use paper towels to absorb the oil. Then use the mod podge. I've done it without windex before and it works too

@@naptimecreations I will try on a small canvas and promise I will tell you the result 🙂 One last question and I won't bother you anymore .. 😇 How best to make up for these holes ..? 🤔 Despite a good cleaning with the window cleaner + baby wipes and 2 layers of resin, they come back, form again when drying. 😤😭 (including on 1 canvas or there is only paint and water 😱😥😓) Has a solution or is it definitely dead ..? 🤔🧐

Is it okay to windex on any type of pour no matter if you use gloss or matte pouring medium with amsterdam acrylics? Also, does the mod podge really help seal the varnish from the silicone "in case" you missed some? But I just checked and I don't have windex. Anything else I can use?
@naptimecreations
@naptimecreations 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, the mod podge is a sealant so it does seal all the silicone. I did try another technique off camera and it works just as well. It's actually easier than this method to clean the silicone oil off. What you want to do is take paper towels and absorb as much silicone oil as you can off the surface of your pour. Then apply 3 coats of rustoleum gloss clear spray paint. Letting each coat dry before you do the next coat. After the 3rd coat is done then it will be all good to go and any silicone oil on the pour will be sealed in.

@@naptimecreations Ugh.... Just realized that I don't have Windex. I think I'll just use water and seal with Mod Podge. I don't see any visible signs of silicone, so maybe I'll just straight up mod Podge it without washing....Lol
