have you considered mixing it up a bit? many of your more recent videos seemed repetitive in style and very oversimplified, maybe go far deeper and far longer, fewer images, i don't even like most of the AI-images, they always look like guards in elder scrolls, more teaching, more detail, like the 40k crowd listens to lore stuff about fake roman legions in space for literal hours if not days on end, so there is an audience for that

Bro honestly, it's not just that I like late roman history/history in general, but your voice and accent are so nice to listen to. You could talk about anything, doesn't have to be late roman, roman or even history at all. As long as I think the topic is interesting, I'll watch it, because I like listening to you and watching these well edited videos. I like the idea of creating another channel where you talk more broadly about history or whatever else you have a passion for.

Yes he has a point, if you temporarily shift the channel to other roman periods for example the crisis of the third century especially since its also a bit of a niche topic and not as widely covered and give it the same level of attention as you do for the rest of your videos it might help your channel rank up subscribers to the point you will later be more free to focus on the topics you want. Actually no one would judge that as it has been done in many channels before were creators would slightly deviate in their oldest videos when they first started out compared to what later their channel's character and focus was best known about. History matters channel is good example of this, were he first made 10 minute videos and his channel was called 10 minute history, then changed the name of his channel and made all his videos on more detailed topics and only 4 minutes long. Nobody judged him for that. In fact I sometimes wondered if you ever did make some videos about an earlier roman period like the third century since you had already mentioned it several times in your videos and how crucial it was for what was to come later. Like he also says, also presentation is just as important the topics themselves and you seem to have a unique talent for it. In fact much more that other channels out there, and I speak as someone who has gone through a lot of history channels. Take Kings and generals channel for example which by now is heading for 4 million subscribers I think. Their videos are great, but the presentation was and will always be troublesome when it comes to the commentator. Personally I always found him and his voice so annoying I often am forced to stop watching their long videos or some topics I avoid entirely just to spare myself of that guys voice giving me a headache who sounds like Donald Duck and is often illiterate as he cant even pronounce many simple english phrases often. I have been learning a whole new level of english thanks to that guy. If this wasn't the case i would have watched ALL their videos since all their topics seem interesting. If they actually had a different commentator all these years my guess would be they would have had 10 mil subscribers easily, since their videos are actually the best in quality and on very interesting topics. Not to mention the people also behind the channel are not the best people... that I know from some personal experience I had with them once a long time ago. they always tried to present themselves as cool and friendly but in truth I suspect they are snobs, bullies and outright two-faced horrible people. They for example advertised their new discord channel for people to join but what they do is troll and silent ban anyone who isnt there to worship them and instead dares to judge their work or express an opinion in private conversations you might have between you and another person, not even address them directly. You see.. you do not have any of this. People know you and appreciate the person behind this channel as well as they have seen in person and they know what they are getting into. So I hope you understand its not just about a channel's topic or if its niche like you say, as people also give much attention and importance to other things such, as who is the person telling the story, and if the guy also happens to be a great person irl which isn't even a must, then that comes as a great bonus. I would place the quality of your channel to the same level of EPIC HISTORY TV channel.

I find your channel very interesting because it really is one of the few that deal with the late Roman Empire. But now that you are at 100k my suggestion is to expand a bit the topics, the crisis of the 3 century, the Tetrarchy, Costantine and his successors, the Sassanid empire, the barbarian federations that fought the Romans, the early east Roman Empire and how it dealt with the Islamic invasions for example. The period of the crisis and the end of the classical world basically. Good luck and keep doing your job, it’s great.

Please keep up the good work! I've always found the "transitory" periods of history to be the most fascinating and informative. In the case of your channel and the history of the Late Roman Empire/Early Middle Ages, it should NOT be "niche". When it comes to the Roman Empire, too many historians (and popular culture) focuses on the more "well known" earlier empire. So we get historical "soap operas" about Nero and movies like "Gladiator". When Rome was at it's height. But it's transitory periods in history, when things are changing rapidly from something familiar, to something new and unknown---that offer lessons today for even our modern world.

For me, that i have been a subscriber since you had like 6 or 7K followers i think that your videos are great. Many, many topics discussed and described in detail things that as a history lover, never thought of or never gave enough attention. Your videos are awesome and by the time i have seen an improvement in the quality. If you keep improving the maps for example, or you keep displaying interesting pictures of how the characters may have looked like, i think this is what a person asks for. People dont want just storytelling, they want something more visual. And that works all the time. So for me , i think just a slight improvement of maps, images, and this channel is still amazing as it was from the first moment! Keep going man, don't quit! Maiorianus didn't quit! Seeing this mass of next video ideas was like seeing heaven 😍 I really see your struggle and hope you can work this out! I'll definitely keep supporting you! Maybe also a good idea would be to just sometimes make a video about earlier Roman things. They could reach a lot of views and bring new people to this channel and MAKE them interested in this Niche topic. Many people just don't know how interesting that time is. AND you wouldn't even have to resort to the well-known subjects like Caesar and stuff: Think about the year 69 for example. It is like a speedrun of the 3rd century crisis and in this way kind of connected to it. You could make videos about such events and put them in context, connecting them to the "fall" of the empire. Or things like comparing in detail the way the Pagans "hunted" Christians and the way the Christians later worked to end Paganism. In this way wouldn't really change the focus of the channel and but it could reach a somewhat larger audience. But of course I fully understand it when this doesn't appeal to you. You have your own ideas for your videos and they are what makes this channel so great. I hope we can fix your problem, because this channel MUST continue! If Maiorianus falls, the empire falls...

So I have some constructive feedback to give that might help with the situation, you can take it or leave it as you wish, but this is my two cents on why your channel is struggling with this: 1) Your current problem seems to be that you have a lot of empty subscribers. This means you have a lot of people who might have liked one of your videos, subscribed and then aren't interested in any of your other videos. Or people who liked your older videos, dislike your new videos, but can't be bothered to unsubscribe. The best way to deal with this is to either give your channel a strong sense of identity, so people don't come just for the topics, but they come for *you* and *your perspective* on the topics, or to do a big shakeup with your videos to bring people back. 2) This leads into another point, which is that your current videos feel like they're dragging their feet, which isn't good for building an audience. A lot of your recent videos feel very rehashed (even the ones that aren't straight reuploads with not context given), and often just cover the same topics you've covered before. This makes people exhausted with your videos because it feels too much like a content farm, which I don't think is your intention, because you do seem genuinely interested in this subject. 3) Speaking of content farms, from a subjective level I think you need to tone down the AI art. For one, AI art is something that has increasingly been associated with content farms and scams. It makes your videos way less appealing to look at and to click on, because they look like bot-content. 4) If you want to make videos on more general Roman history by talking about more 'trendy' topics, you can still tie it into late Roman history. There are ways of doing that which don't feel forced. For example, instead of making yet another video about why men think about the Roman Empire, you can make a video about why men don't think as much about the Late Roman Empire. I've seen other channels do things like this, and it seems to work okay. 5) This last one you can definitely take or leave, as you should not take financial advice from KZfaq comments, but I feel like dedicating yourself to making a channel about such a niche topic a full-time job isn't a very wise decision. A channel like this is better as a passion project that happens to make money, not as a full-time gig. General audiences won't flock to this topic, so the best way to gain an audience is by growing an audiences that respects you and your work, and want to learn more. You're not going to grow an audience like this by churning out content for the sake of it.

Well one upside to doing some, and I mean just some basic Roman videos would be drawing in the crowds of people who normally don't think about the Late Empire and then getting them to watch your other videos and find out that this timeframe is actually interesting. It might be a way to actually broaden society's historical interests. I mean, more videos contrasting the Republic and Late Empire would be pretty appealing to both sides of the coin for instance I think.

Hello Maiorianus, thank you for the great content! I have two suggestions. I don't know how much it would benefit the channel as a whole, but have you tried doing any streams? I think it's a great way to engage the audience every once in a while. Second, have you thought about talking about the "The Course of Empire" paintings from Thomas Cole? One of them is associated all the time with the fall of Rome (as I'm sure you know), so maybe it would be interesting to look into its popularity for fun (and if it could have looked anything like that). That's it, keep up and don't give up!

Actually I think you could do some "trendy" videos time to time. 1.) For exemple about things in earlier roman history that are also relevant for the late history, and you could add a new perspective, and tell what were the consequencies on the long run. 2.) People would find these videos easier, and start to watch other videos of yours, and then they only realized that they got interested in late roman history when it is aleady too late! Ofc this is just a thought and I would not want the general focus of this channel to shift too. As you said not many people are interested in late roman history, but you could make them to be! (actually from my N=1 sample set (which includes my too) I can conclude that this happens with probability 1 :) )

Sebastian, hi, I sent you some money. Your channel is very well done and the topic is interesting. I'm wondering a couple of things. 1) Can you link to Byzantine history? In my view, the outcome of that history was tragic for the Western World. I prefer Asia Minor to Turkey. And have you thought of an occasional trip to late Roman or Byzantine cities? Tourism makes history come alive. 2) Is there any way to link your videos to actual latin texts? For example, Ammianus Marcellinus's writings?

Maiorianus, you should turn your walk into Roman cities into a small illustrated book. Just like how told-in-stone has some Roman books, maybe you should do it too with your niche. It’s not just your late Roman history that has kept an audience. Your voice makes the videos 10x better. I thunk it’s great that you had a niche to get a consistent audience, but I think it’s time to expand especially as a full time youtube. Start will all of Roman history - and don’t just stick to informational videos (this are still great) but make theoretical videos and edits and other things.

I love your work, but I’m barely able to keep the lights on and food in the fridge. If that changes, I’ll be glad to send you some support. Wish me the best. I wish you the best.

I watch all your videos. You are a legend. I have a suggestion: add to the name of your channel " the last of the Romans" . I am sure you would reach a wider public.

Don't feel that you are limited to only the late Western Roman Empire. I would be more than happy if you discussed related transition period topics. There's a lot of stuff in the east that's worth covering that happened as a direct response to changes in Europe. If it's interesting, we'll watch! Expand as you feel you need too.

I hope you can continue in the niche topic, but it should not be niche as it is very interesting. For example, I had no idea about the realms of syagrius and nepos after 476, but it is very interesting to learn about. Thank you for making this amazing content and I hope you can continue to do what you enjoy in the future!🙂🙂👍👍

I couldn't stop the fall of Roman Empire 😅 or at least that punk Ricimer from killing Maiorianus or Antemius. And my financial situation is far from great. But I guess I can become a member and spare 1 EUR. And I just did. I hope others will do it, too. I've always been fascinated by the topic and been having the same questions. Hoping to explore the subject of Altar of Victory. When I got more money, you can bet I'll become Ceasar supporter

Hello :) Thank you very much for your support, I really appreciate it. Every Euro helps, so therefore I am very grateful. Yes, there are so many fascinating topics that we can still explore regarding late Roman History, and it is very heartwarming for me to see so many people that share the same fascination with late Rome. So therefore, many thanks and all the best from me :)

Alas. The reason I donate blood regularly is that I have no money to spare for "charities". It doesn't matter how worthy a cause is when one has only lint in one's pockets.

Actually I would be very interested in EARLY Roman History as well, from Romulus/Remus up to Sulla/Cesar. Usually in school you learn the history about Romulus, then Hanibal, Cesar/Augustus, Nero, Marcus Aurelius, Constantine. That's it.

The KZfaq channel Imperium Romanum (based in the Netherlands) is also relatively new and specializes in topics not found elsewhere. It too is trying to raise funds, but just lately got a sponsor that makes comic books based on ancient Rome (no, not Asterix). The channel is educational focused, so that videos can be used by youth, not just adults. It films live action documentaries outdoors with local Roman fan groups in historical dress. Any way Maiorianus could get support in Germany from fan groups?

I think you should do early Roman History too. Because you can tell and alter it to improve the late Roman history and show how it happened.
