Zeiss is leaving the photography industry. They haven't produced a lens since 2019, and they are focusing on smartphones now because the camera industry is dying. In an article written by DPReview who pretended to be out of business to fire all their expensive employees and replace them with A.I robots, Zeiss pretends to explain their quote.

I am a photographer and work with Zeiss sometimes and we just had a representative from them in the office, he explained that they are leaving the DSLR market specifically (which is not really news, as everyone is doing that) and someone leaked it wrong and now everyone says they are leaving photography all together. They have their Batis lineup pretty much done, don't wanna re-release any focal lenghts and they are super down to make Z and RF-Mount stuff....but especially Canon is very difficult to work with.

...and yet, the last lens that made me stop and think about (and I'm still thinking) is a used ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZF in F mount. My daughter does children portraiture, ...to replace the Nikon version of that lens.

Sony has replaced Zeiss for their alpha line up with the G and GM lenses. Only Zeiss T*Star coating remains in their Xperia line.

I suspect something strange started ~ 4 yerrs ago when I read about Sony Zeiss 35mm issues, like blurry image some samples, maybe bad QC. There was conspirancy rumor about Sony intentionally degrade to get GM shine on sales, as all secrets already "stolen" and even enhanced (that XA elements in GM lenses). Anyway, some man who work in Zeiss mentioned "there is no more that legendary Zeiss we all known before". Nearly same time Zeiss mentioned as top contributor to revolutionaly EUV lithography as they are make that impossible mirrors.

Photographic lenses are basically a hobby for Zeiss. If they throw everything they've got at it, they can produce something brilliant like the Otus lineup. Conversely, the Touits aren't really all that great. If you want to have the greatest mirrorless lenses out there, it has to be Leica SL (the non-Sigmas at least), anyway.

When it comes to 3D pop I think it is not only fewer elements, but also the Zeiss Sonnar design specifically that is a winner. - So one should perhaps try to hunt down the other lenses that have copied the Sonnar design to get similar quality. They are listed at bottom of the wikipedia article on Sonnar.

Isnt this "sonnar design" or derivates pretty heavy used in basically most vintage lenses from 1950-1970? My SMC Takumar 50 1.4, the 7/6 element version probably from 1970-1973 also has a very similar look as the so loved Sonnar Design, the more expensive and rare 8/6 version (the one model they claimed to lose money with every sale) is more like a Planar-Zeiss since its sharper and less dreamy as well vintage looking.

I love my Zeiss lenses. I have the 85 planar, 50 planar, and 35 f2 distagon classics. If Zeiss really stops making lenses, the used prices will probably go up. Sad face. I must complete my collection!

I had once the biometar 80/2.8 as my first portrait lens, amazing lens for its age! Also the only Zeiss camera lens i ever had. I would just wish to still have it to compare to my recently purchased 50 1.4 SMC Takumar (in radioactivity mainly, the Takumar is "ticking" and i cant even measure alpha!)

Honestly, for a long time my expensive and heavy camera equipment is the real "backup"! It is the smartphone that accompanies me constantly. The Zeiss brand logo on the lenses has to be enough for me. I'm not part of the extreme minority that can afford a $2,800 lens.

I still have a Batis 18mm and am feeling a certain itch for the 135mm. But a sign of life would be nice, really. Marketing talk is cheap, execution is everything. Alternatively, some of the Voigtlanders are pretty cool ... the 110mm is breathtaking.

@@morimetz I needed to at least be given a chance. From the moment it was announced it was fighting an uphill battle for some reason, even though the Leica Q line always gets a pass for being generally the same camera with updated sensor ar a high pricepoint.

I always say the Fuji X100 is a poor man's Leica Q, but the Zeiss is just a stupid man's Leica Q 😀 Sorry for hating the ZX1 with so much passion, my dreams were crushed.

Zeiss Otus can be had secondhand for considerably cheaper than new, same with their Batis. Maybe they are dying. I don’t think Zeiss is making more lenses specifically for Sony, Sony moved on to the Gmaster line.

Ah DPreview. They noticed that the SONY "ZEISS" lens and the EPSON lens and the Canon PowerShot G1/G2 lens in the late 90s, early 2000, consisted of the same exact optical elements. So no, that lens wasn't made by Zeiss; finally Canon came forward to assure them that they were the OEM for these lenses. Today's SONY camcorder and small-shit lenses for sure still come from an Asian OEM in spite of Zeiss branding. That being said that lens that ended up on the G2, it was actually very well behaved, Canon had done a solid job. But then they went "it has to be better with more zoomies, 3x is not enough" and screwed up the one that ended up on G3/G5.

I had the Nokia N93 and i LOVED this phone, ehm camera, ehm camcorder.... Except the fact it was heavy and thick, it was a great design, 3x optical zoom, zeiss approved, even image stabilizer (tho it was weak). To be honest, thinking about my N93 now, considering it had a decently wide angle, this phone is probably a better vlogging camera today than most others (like the Canon V10 which looks like a rebranded chinese forest/wildlife camera)

@@eagleeyephoto8715 Pretty much but maybe a full frame digital version. Zeiss / Sony wasn't a clone it was a collabroation so you were getting real Zeiss glass on Sony bodies. Obviously Sony invested in their R&D to make their own glass so they did not have to collaborate much anymore.

@@kevin.itruth6880 Zeiss provide only license and rights to Sony and that is where it ends up. None of Sony Zeiss lenses is build by Zeiss, same as Panasonic and Leica, Samsung and schneider. Sony put some money in his Minolta optics department to make G and GM series. Zeiss making Batis and Otus line up as well as Touit for E and X mount but latest one is also licensed to Japan. Btw not going FF Fujifilm is a smart decision of Fujifilm considering the market.

Thats true, as someone regularily repairing lenses from vintage to modern ones.... its hard to get good manufactured spare parts. The best bet are other broken lenses and swapping parts which doesnt work always. But the biggest issue are seals, you either have to make compromises with not completely fitting material or remove old or sticky seals completely without replacing them (which is bad, dust inside and so...) But on the other hand, i found once a good online store selling very much spare parts and partially even repair kits dedicated to some lenses. I torn apart once a Canon EF 50 1.4 USM with heavy focus issues (sticking focus, focus shifted on the image plane aka misaligned lenses) with a dedicated repair tool kit for this lens to clean and set up everything new inside beside repairing the broken AF/MF clutch. It was a pain in the ass and the reason i avoid more modern lenses. turned out, not only the AF/MF clutch was worn and partially broken beside the focus shift issues, but also the ring was bent and hard to bend back. This damn aluminium ring to find is practically impossible without paying too much. About 150-250€ we pay in austria for the lens, i paid about 150€ for the repair (clutch + special tools) but only because i had a necessary spare part, the ring needed, without this part repairing would cost like 250€+ since a spare lens is the best option.

Asianometry has several videos on the semiconductor race. Honestly prefer Canon 50mm EF 1.8 over Sony ZEISS 55mm 1.8... needed something for the Sony A7RII. It's basically just a great fringing lens, if you love purple trash looking photos... err I mean video. My golly gosh it's heavy too!

Contax G2 with Zeiss lenses… sigh.. Sony A7r, A7r3, A7r4… and Zeiss - Loxia is killer. It was where I started with happiness and fun, now I’m keeping my Zeiss.. but Sony is nailing it with their G Master lenses and Sigma is an industry standard. For manual lenses, Voigtlander has become the industry standard, especially for adapted manual focus lenses. So, goodbye Zeiss, sadly. One door closes and another door opens.

U use the word photography too much my friend! I hate it.. Its video all the way.. 💪 Find another hobby.. Zeiss Will be gone someday.. thats for shure.. Just as KZfaq and all the other garbage.. Called internet..i hate it 😂..Bought a mixer Mackie DLZ because of a lot of hype and good reviews on KZfaq but SUCKED BIGTIME! Thats why i like this channel!
