Thank you everyone that pointed out the potential ethical issue of this. Being honest that didn’t even cross my mind *face palms myself*. I’m researching it right now and will update this pinned comment once I have more information on it! In the mean time if you know any information about it please comment below. 1) I’d love to hear from dairy farmers (thank you to those that left comments below, I defiantly recommend going and reading them) 2) my main concern is by harvesting the colostrum is it depriving the new born calves? Or is there plenty to go around from the mama? Let us know if you have any insight! UPDATE: So far I have found it is dependss on the dairy farmer. Some dairy farmers take the calve away within 24 hours of it being born and bottle feed it, therefore the baby calve isn't using the colostrum from its mother. Other dairy farmers believe the newborn calve will only use a portion of the colostrum, therefore there is extra to harvest. Then there is dairy farmers that believe all of it should go to the calve and do not harvest any colostrum. Comes down to finding the practices of the dairy farmer that align with your ethics most (just like your own thoughts on drinking milk). I'm still researching this so will continue to update as I find more and more :)

I've been taking Armra since the beginning of the year and love it! I was skeptical of ethics as well, but on the website they state that the calves only use a small percentage of the colostrum and therefore they take the leftover. The owner of Armra restated this on the Him and Her Podcast also! Not sure about other brands and their ethics though so research is always great.

I'm a dairy farmer and we don't drink collostrum, despite having free access to it. I know this isn't a scientific take but i definitely made me suspicious when i saw your video come up. So a few thoughts: quality of the collostrum varies incredibly between cows (best quality is known as "golden colostrum" which is often checked by colour or using a little test for brix percentage. A cow only has this high quality colostrum for under a day so hopefully the cows producing it are part of a normal dairy herd so the rest of their milk is sold as normal? Otherwise it's insanely wasteful. This colostrum is also the time when there is most likely to be infection/pus in the milk (part of why it's not normally allowed to be sold as milk). And the gut health thing is kind of curious as cows as ruminants with 4 stomachs. Not so much in common with humans... interesting video. Thanks. Really got me thinking.

Interesting information, I was wondering how much colostrum a dairy cow would actually produce. Less than a day is not that much. Interesting that there's sometimes pus in it too. I think it's best to leave it for the newborn calves.

@@madeleinemetalmusicyes, womens’ hormones make it so the first days of milk production is filled with anti-bodies and it’s insanely beneficial to a new-born. We are a different mammal though. All of these new ”technologies” make me think… shouldn’t we first try to get the population to eat at least healthy-ish before relying on ”gimmicks”

Sooo... its a newborn baby cow's most important nutritionak milk - why are WE taking it from them? When the baby cow gets robbed of its milk, what are WE replacing the milk with? I'm confused ..and sad for the calf. (and I am aware that many baby cows basically go straight to slaughter so milk will be "left over" but.....)

I looked into this and, at least with the brand armra, they only take what the calf doesn’t. The mother cow produces and excess, and she needs to be milked anyways, so the baby gets everything it needs and wants, this is just the excess!

Clearly you’ve never been around cows. They have SO MUCH MILK after they give birth they literally follow around their owners for them to relieve them because their babies can only take so much. I grew up in Europe and my grandparents had many cows. This was always the case, the cows would follow my grandma around like a cat begging to be milked after their babies were fed

I am not vegan, etc. But isn't colostrum important for the calves? It is their first protection and very important for their immune system (like it is for humans). In a world where we don't want to consume loads of antibiotics in on the food we consume, shouldn't we keep this nature's protection for the organisms that actually really need it? Specially when we think of some pandemics that have its sources in industrial farming. Idk, just an idea... I don't fully understand or studied the impacts of its production, but... Sounds wrong

My thoughts on colostrum. Don’t worry about the calves. Big Dairy doesn’t worry about feeding calves. Cows are impregnated every 9 months or so, give birth, calves are often destroyed. First weeks after delivering, that colostrum can bring in more profit. Yay for Big Dairy. Cows are then put on the milking cycle. It’s sad.

@@CEDesignsjust one small correction... *Male* calves usually are destroyed (veal, calf skin leather, etc). Female calves get re-routed back into the system.
@esthergroeneweg1625
@esthergroeneweg1625 2 ай бұрын
A lot of the time dairy cows will produce more milk than their calves can drink. Same goes for colostrum. We would freeze extra colostrum and feed to calves when they got sick for an extra boost of vitamins and all the good stuff. Every 3 months we would have a bunch of leftover colostrum that we would sell to keep our supply fresh for the calves and so it wouldn’t go to waste. Now in the first 24 hours of calving we only milk the mother cow just enough to feed the calf. We freeze an ice cube amount to add to milk when calves are sick. So mother cows udder is a bit fuller for the first 24 hours but they always have the option to go into the Robot to be milked whenever they want. We feed calves colostrum by bottle but calves have the option to drink from mother for the first 24 hours of mother lets them. After 24 hours we put calves behind a gate so mother can still lick and smell her baby but mother has the option to join her friends back in the herd. We do this so calf can stay safe and so we can monitor them, as well as put them on a transition diet. We also track colostrum, milk and grain intake at this time. Slowly we start to introduce hay as well. It is extremely important for us to raise healthy strong calves because getting sick while young can affect them for the rest of their life in a negative way.
@esthergroeneweg1625
@esthergroeneweg1625 2 ай бұрын
Hi, just a couple of corrections if you’re interested! Dairy farmers actually care a lot about calf health as a healthier calf will be more profitable as a milking cow. Better profit margins means you’re able to help take care of your cows in a better way. Happy cows= better milk production. It is impossible to impregnate a cow every nine months. A cow is pregnant for about 9 months and 10 days. Breeding happens about 80-90 days after they’ve had their last calf and there’s no guarantee she will be pregnant right away. When cows are pregnant they get dried off, meaning they don’t get milked for 2-4 months before calving and hangout eating good feed to help support their pregnancy. Calves are not destroyed they are either brought up to be in the herd one day or most farmers will breed for a beef cross meaning beef cross cows will be raise for beef. A male dairy cow is almost unheard of these days unless the male calf is raise for breeding. Cows do not produce colostrum for a week, just 24 hours then sometimes they have transition milk for two days and sometimes after 24 hours it’s just regular milk. Dairy cows produce way more milk than their calves can drink so the “milking cycle” can be beneficial for them and us! We take care of them and they take care of us! I’m extremely passionate about the dairy industry but don’t own my own farm. Thanks for reading if you did! :)

personal opinion: dairy is not a necessary food group, nutrients we get from it can be sourced elsewhere. reasons why i think this: historically humans weren't drinking milk past the age of 5. milk is for babies. this is why lactose intolerance is common. additionally, there's only cross-mammalian breast feeding in rare fostering situations. bovine colostrum should be for bovine infant. all of the benefits this product touts is assuming the effects colostrum has for infants is equally transferrable to adults. yes, i eat dairy products but only because i enjoy butter & cheese. not because i think i need to.

Exactly. I do eat cheese and butter, sometimes yoghurt and kefir, but try to go grass fed organic ethically raised as much as possible. My issue with dairy, apart from the obvious "grown mammals don't need milk" is exactly the exploitation that happens around it. I do have some friends that grew up in rural communities and had sheep, and they would make their own cheese - seasonally, as there would be a lamb, any leftover milk was made into cheese, and once the lamb stopped nursing... No more cheese. But then I also do not like the "everything available at all times" for fruit an veg either and try to buy local and seasonal whenever I can. Plus an occasional treat, because neither avocados nor papayas grow where I live - but I wouldn't have them daily.

Fun tales of evolution: Not all milk is breast milk. Whaaa!?!? Turns out that some birds (namely pigeons, flamingos, and emperor penguins) have a prolactin pathway and produce milk too, but since they don't have breasts the milk is produced in their crop (like a pre-stomach/chewing organ since birds don't chew), and is called Crop Milk. At the end of the day milk is all about adults getting good nutrients to their babies, and by making Crop Milk some species of birds have found ways to better make sure that their babies survive. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_milk

If you were a breastfed baby, you’ve had colostrum from you mom soooo you’re good babes. This is about as cray cray as bodybuilders buying breastmilk on the black market. Yikes. Also, colostrum from other beings that are not your mom is risky. This seems like a sham. There are benefits of colostrum for babies but it’s from their mother, not supplements. This seems like a money grab and a sham. Just my 2 cents.

So…I’ve been taking three scoops of Armra every day for about eight months. I did some research beforehand but I heard it helped with hair shedding and I was desperate to try anything at that point. I haven’t been sick in that time (my partner has been and I never caught anything) but I don’t think I’ve seen any solid results. I thought it helped hair fallout after a few weeks, was so happy…then it started again soon after and hasn’t stopped. I kept taking it hoping to find that happy place again but it never happened for me. I might be one of the only people who watched this to see if I should STOP taking it! This is only my experience, but I fully agree with what Keltie says at the end - if you have your nutrition down and are getting enough sleep (and maybe throw a multivitamin of some kind in there), you don’t need this. Plus, if you’re taking the recommended three scoops, it’s over $100 a month. Put that toward food that feels good in your belly and you’ll be way better off.

I’m not trying to minimize your experience but just share mine as I know with hair loss it can be many many things. I went into perimenopause (I’m 42) and the last few years I’ve been losing hair and you can experience hair changes with perimenopause and can start perimenopause up to 10 years prior to menopause. I have a few health issues and see a litany of doctors so my hormones were tested some what often due to a brain tumor. It was me wearing my hair up all the time… I naturally have very thing hair. I was get annoyed with my hair touching me when it is hot, with Covid I starting wearing my hair up all the time. I mean basically 24/7 sometimes even slept with the soft scrunchy in. I stoped and also switched hair care. Also my Dermatologist told me to stop brushing my hair wet as when it is wet is when it is at its most brittle. It’s been almost a year since I started only put my hair up when I exercise (4-5 days a week for about 1-2 hours) and I am getting back to my pervious quantity of hair also it is thicker with the new hair care. Side note, I have never styled or blow dried my hair, I leave it natural. I don’t like the feel of styling products. I am hoping some of this helps. Best of luck to you, hair loss can be so defeating.

An healthy person does not need colostrum. While a new born calf does need it. Colostrum is reach in antibodies, especially IgG ones. Newborns have only the innate immunity, but still need to develop adaptive ones. Depriving them of colostrum expose them to infections and inflammation. Colustrum can bring medical benefits to people that are immunodepressed or going through heavy treatment. Its use should be restricted to them. In my opinion selling and marketing it in the way influencers do, it is unethical. It is a nonsense wasteful toxic consumerism approach that should not be supported.

As a Veterinary student and an animal scientist I saw influencers talking about this and it really just made me laugh. I appreciate you giving it such an honest review! The reason colostrum is so important for new borns (calves specifically) is because they have an open gut for the first 6 hours of life to be able to absorb the nutrients in colostrum such as immunoglobulins. My understanding is that colostrum is high in IgG immunoglobulins, which helps heal your gut lining (and thus leads to all the claimed benefits)! So if your gut health is good (aka no leaky gut), it probably wouldn't make a huge difference. There are other immunoglobulin supplements for that instead of having to stomach the gross texture of colostrum or those that oppose ethically!! I choose those instead. haha

The clumping is supposedly a good thing, it happens because the product doesn’t have fillers added in to make the blend smoother. *shrug* 2. The colostrum isn’t being taken away from baby cows who need it, it’s overflow that would normally be discarded as a waste product. They have a lot more information about it on the website if you’d like to learn more. That being said, I agree with Keltie that you probably don’t need to sell your soul to afford taking this unless you want to and are financially able to. Also, the fruity flavors are way better plain than the chocolate one. The peach is my fave.

Honestly I am a vet student and I know that calves have special receptors in their digestive system that make it easier for the Immunoglobins (from the colostrum) to get into the blood. These receptors are only there in the first few hours after the birth. So I don't think that humans can actually absorb these "nutrients", because I don't think that we have these receptors-

Honestly, love you and your channel. This is quite legit the new AG1, in terms of influencer push. In fact, my husband and I were influenced separately to each! He still takes AG1, I do not take Armra anymore. The chocolate Armra tastes terrible, not like cocoa at all…not even close. I never saw any change whatsoever to how I felt while taking Armstra…good or bad.

I would have to say no thank you. 😂 Colostrum is what babies get. That is why it is important when you pump that you make sure you slowly warm up the breast milk as to make sure the colostrum is heated properly. I had to be careful when pumping as my first was a lazy breastfeeder and I had to pump after she was given a bottle of formula.

I drink colostrum, and yes I have used the Armra brand. I don't buy it for the gimmicky stuff they now advertise for - I'm not looking for better hair or skin or to lose weight because of it. I use it because I have struggled with gut health, immune issues and inflammation issues. Do I think it has helped with my digestion? Yes... if I use it continually. I also think it is a puzzle piece in why I haven't been sick in a year! Do I think it's a miracle worker? No. If you have no gut issues, no immune issues, pretty okay health overall, I'm not sure the average person is going to see much difference in their health that good sleep and nutrition won't help. I have endometriosis, and my digestion is intertwined with how bad my pain and inflammation is month to month. Sooooo, a supplement like colostrum that is good for the gut AND the immune system in one, is something that directly targets my very specific needs.

I personally enjoy using dairy products to get enough protein in my diet. I know other people feel differently, however I do think kefir, plain yogurt is great for probiotics and I live close to some cool farms that practice ethical cattle farming. Secondly cheese is great for the essential protein tryptophan - I've done a lot of research and have never heard of collustrum before - I do agree it seems like an unnecessary supplement that you'd just buy because the packaging is aesthetic.

Colostrum has definitely changed my hairline, it helped me re grow my baby hairs. I was taking it to help heal my gut. I also use it topically on my skin (I use the leftover in the cup) and it helps with acne. I do have diabetes and health issues so I believe that if you are already healthy, you won't see a difference. I got another brand but I personally barely dilute it so it really just taste like milk . You water it down too much.

Try healthy Japanese food: natto (fermented soy beans). It looks nasty, does not taste good (for me), but it is touted as a very healthy food. Because it is not a specific extracted/isolated nutrient, it has more benefit over all. It took me over two decades before I could be able to eat it with Wasabi-masking.

I'm not usually against drinking milk from other animals, and I fully eat meat and drink milk and all those things because I know that milk can be gathered ethically. But don't come at me because while there are ethical farms, I know that's not how the dairy always industry does things. But I don't think I can get behind the ethics of colostrum. Colostrum is only available in the first two or three days of life for a newborn before the mother's milk comes in, so in order to supply this to anyone, let alone all the people that they're having to supply now because it's becoming popular, newborns are going to have to be pulled from their mothers in the first hour of life before they get a chance to nurse at all. Which means they're going to need more supplements to keep them healthy in order to be used for milk or meat in the future. I love farming, but I prefer ethical farming and this just isn't it.

I actually like the taste of the chocolate one 😆 You could’ve used the unflavored one and mixed it in almond milk. The main benefit I’ve had is weight loss. It ramped up my metabolism! I was finding myself losing weight and feeling more hungry, being able to eat more food while losing weight. I was sold! I looked on the website after this started happening to me, and the studies show a percentage of participants had weight loss.

So, we get milk from cows, that's... Not very ethical, but have been doing it forever pretty much, I don't wanna get it that debate here. But now we're taking the very first milk that's supposed to give the little calves their immunity? And the demand is getting so high, I can't imagine this is being produced in an ethical way. Either they're scamming us, or they're hurting the cows. Or both.

I got this product and the seal was broken but the company replaced it. I swore I heard they had a lawsuit I assumed from false claims but I don’t really know. I’m not a health optimizer, I’ve had relapsing endometriosis, bladder cancer then got during chemotherapy POTS after years of vaguely worsening health. Research showed due to some immune issues the drug IVIG could modulate immunity but it’s pricey and not easy to get from a doctor and I anecdotally heard people used colostrum for similar immune regulation. I used another brand and didn’t see discernible difference but I still wonder if there’s potential. If so I’m not sure Amra at the price point is the brand of choice but I do wonder if there’s some colostrum potential

Okay, so this product is made from "early lactation milk" which is available/produced shortly after giving birth. I'm not a vegan, but I do have questions. Shouldn't this be reserved for calfs? Don't we have better options available from other sources? As someone who listens to a lot of health themed podcasts, I haven't encountered this product - yet. However, looking at your influencers, they are mostly women while I listen to guys promoting LMNT or AG1, hehe. Which I then think is even more hilarious to see women exploiting women for "health benefits". I'm just picturing a group of health - mind - spirit women just rushing to the cow minutes after giving birth.
