Jeep Patriot Front Strut Assembly Replacement & Coil Spring Compressors

In this video, I show how I removed and installed the front coil spring assemblies on my Jeep Patriot 2009. I also show how I compressed the coil springs in order to replace the struts and the dust shields. The torque specifications were also applied accordingly.

I watched your video. The upper strut bearings on my 2009 Patriot disintegrated, as the prior owner did not replace them when he did the struts. When I went through my VW phase, you had to replace those, and the strut tower mount(a rubber isolator inside that dries out and shrinks), every time you do the struts. The VW bearings were heavy steel units. I was getting steering problems and loud spring jumps on the Patriot. The new bearings did not have instructions on whether to grease the flimsy plastic bearings when Installed. I see you used anti-seize compound, I think I will do the same. They sell replacement ant-sway bar links with grease-able zerk fittings, as the links can be good, but make a squeaking sound. I always use "Mystic JT-6", as it is a Calcium-based grease that does not absorb water, bacteria cannot grow in it, and is super cushion-y for impacts. Space-age grease used for NASCAR bearings(215MPH). I like your tape around the socket idea, I will do that also. I used your wood block, with C-clamp, and the jack handle to get apart the Lower control arm ball-joint, trick. It worked like a charm to replace the Control arms. Thanks! When I did the rear struts, the internet said to replace the whole unit(Quick-Strut Assembly), but I never did that before, so I only replaced the strut cartridge. Sure enough, the 2009 Patriot sits 2 inches lower than our 2017 Patriot does. Apparently, the Patriot has really weak rear springs that sag over time. No problem, as it actually feels more stable and rides better. *I am waiting for your video on replacing the drive shafts/CV Joints! Thanks/Steve from Detroit.

Many types of oil based grease (water resistant or not) make rubber and some kind of plastic to swell up, to get sticky or slimy and decompose. Usually it is safe to use silicone grease with rubber parts and some specific plastics. There is a lot of new synthetic grease product on the market, so the instructions and the warnings should always be followed to avoid problems.

Your videos are great.. almost like something put out by an education institution rather than KZfaq. Though I have to ask… can you provide some more detail on the tool you created to take the strut mount/bearing off the top?

The side wall of each of the 2 sockets was cut to create an external hexagonal shape to be used with a wrench. I did it with a grinder.

By chance is your sway bar hitting the control arm? I got some KYBs for my 2015 and i have to put a load on to get my stabilizer link in on top which makes the LCA and sway bar touch. When I am on a back road, i cant hear it hitting all the time.

Hi, mine has 50,000 miles and i already changed tires, but now im gonna change struts, i use it in city, bought the 4 struts monroe and the 2 bases of the front are monroe, but the trunk ones are chinesse, was it time to change them? Or am i missing something? An advice? Thanks its 4x2 fwd 2008 patriot

It seems that the struts installed on the Jeep are aftermarket ones. Personally I don't think the Chinese struts are made to last long. If they were installed not a long time ago, they might be working fine. But... if they were installed many years ago I would replace them. In any case, I would look for any oil leak or trace coming from the upper section of each strut because it is a sign of worn shocks. There are many KZfaq videos on ''signs of worn shocks and struts'' you can check them online it will help you to get good information. Note: If you replace your struts, make sure to prime them before the installation. When replacing the strut assembly, it is a good time to inspect the other suspension components. Don't forget, safety first.

For my vehicles, I order my parts from my local auto parts store. When I work on family members vehicles, most of the time they bring their new parts.

Don't tighten down the top strut nuts until the vehicle is on the ground under its own weight.

This is a different way to do it, but, according to the official (Chrysler) Jeep Patriot Service Info installation procedure, the 3 top nuts must be tighten and torqued before the vehicle is on the ground.

You could haver clean everything up, remove the rust and it look so much better, I understand that lazy people don't do this and thats just a shame!!
