For what it’s worth, I think the Rut buster series are the most useful guitar instruction videos on the net. Love how’s it’s presented, student and teacher.. also helps that I’m almost exactly where Lee is as a guitarist.. keep up the good work!!

It's definitely more beneficial watching Justin teaching Lee rather than the usual where you just watch the expert etc. I love that Lee understands his frailties and is humble.
@ShadyRealRap96
@ShadyRealRap96 5 жыл бұрын
@@BurnleyNuts actually, tho i do think that this series is beneficial, you learn in fact much more by listening straight up to the experts facts, learn the shapes, the theory that makes it work and then USE it. and yes...that does not only sound like alot of work, it IS alot of work. its work that most great guitar players do. this series is a bit more about fun and all, and thats awesome, i dont even need the videos anymore, i just watch them cause theyre fun, but to really learn something sometimes just isnt fun in the classical sense....but what comes out of all the learning and practice is 10 times more fun than youve ever experted it to be.
@BurnleyNuts
@BurnleyNuts 5 жыл бұрын
@@ShadyRealRap96 Yep, I take your point but I'm doing all of those things too, I have avidly followed Justin for quite a while and obviously from that subscribe to his own website where there is the more conventional instructional type of videos with just the tutor passing on his knowledge and loads to pick up and learn from no matter what level you are at. I've played for years but never had any formal training and so probably like Lee missed out on much of the theory stuff that I ought to have learned back in the day when I was young, I've also picked up (again like Lee) many bad habits that I'm trying to get my brain to shake. I have setup myself a regular hour per day practice regime now and that's really helping. I think for me where these videos help is that it's reassuring me that all of my own hang ups can be seen through Justin's interactions with Lee. He is getting to the root of the issues and I relate to that as Lee is of a similar age and ability to myself I think. It is entertaining as you say, funny, almost like a psychologist with a patient, there is still lots to learn from the videos but I agree they should be watched in conjunction with other types of training/instructional videos too.
@BurnleyNuts

I have to add that I do think this series and Justin's own website have re-energised my own interest in wanting to learn so much more than I have previously. I got to a level in my maybe late 20's where I simply stopped learning new things and just did the same old things on guitar that I knew and were safe. Maybe I was too busy with many other things in life at that point but now I certainly have a really renewed energy to start again with the learning process and get rid of old bad habits if possible. These vids are fun to watch but they are definitely helping people out there too.

@@BurnleyNuts This is so true. I feel exactly the same way. I laugh every time Lee questions Justin or goes off on a tangent because I'm doing the exact same thing. It's almost like I'm getting a lesson from Justin face to face, which is something I don't get from his solo lessons. I think an issue with already being quite experienced is that you question everything and relate it back to what you already know. It's really useful having Justin there to go okay calm down and just focus on this, and then explain how focusing on this leads to that. For example in one of the earlier videos where Lee keeps reverting back to the pentatonic whilst learning the major scale.

Lee´s willingness to learn, came from the fact that he loves Honoré´s playing and he actually is a big influence on his playing, i recall everytime that they we´re demoing something, he was just " in love" with Pete´s playing skills and feeling. I love it too.So Captain kudos to you mate from wanting to learn more and take advantage of all those beautiful instruments you have available. Justin, the most patient teacher ever. Always a pleasure to see and thank you for your lessons. Great stuff on Justins and the Andertons channels nowadays.

Not to be negative here but Justin won't be able to keep up those great lessons if everyone thinks "free of cost". I'm BUYING his dvds and contribute what I can; just as if I was going to a local music teacher. In fact, Justinguitar.com is handier than a local teacher.

Justin breaks things down into simple, bitty parts. Sometimes I forget how excellent he is as a guitarist, because he rarely goes there, at least in the beginner lessons. But when he does, it is inspiring. I have been learning how to play guitar by following his lesson plan from the very beginning, am on Intermediate 4 now. Very well structured, especially with the song books.

Episode 9 - half way through the lesson, Justin drops what he’s teaching as Lee is once again parked in his own world of guitar thoughts. He smiles at the camera, then glances down into his lap in contemplation. With a swift lunge, he flicks the captain right in the nose...rips off his mic, storms off frame, and shrieks ...’nutbuster!’ Seriously though, i love this series...put up with it, Justin! You guys rule.

Justin, you did a splendid job! Explained that stuff so intelligible and very understandingly with any incomprehension. Music theory is no thing to drop into one's lap, circle of fifth, caged system, pentatonic scales, chord allocations - i guess the most of us have to knuckle down, ask thousand questions, practice to get the whole picture.

I've been playing with exactly this, but as Paul Davids' video came out a couple of weeks ago I've got a head start over Lee. Also, it's much easier when you can hit pause and go off on a noodle of discovery as the light-bulbs flash on in series. Nice one Justin, even with Paul's video so recent in my memory, there's lots of useful stuff in here by way of example, and a couple of different grip options.

I've been looking everywhere for that Cycle of Fifths one where you use it to cover all 12 notes, but I had no idea what to search for. Good thing I decided to binge the Rut Busters series. I hate opening a book or watching a video, and the thing is just written out in full, because I can't learn unless I figure these things out on my own. Gonna sit down and work through all of these, and write them down as I go along. I reckon that's gonna make it easier to remember, instead of just keeping an app or whatever on my phone. Great stuff, Justin.

As always, a very useful lesson, thanks gents. Very familiar with CAGED (in terms of theory) but some good clues on the ways to use it. Biggest clue for me in this video was the "3rd finger roll'n'slide'" from the A-shape to the G-shape. Highly anticipating the 'Hendrix-Style Embellishments' lesson. Suggestion: to make some notes for us about the 'preferred' (easiest to do) embellishments for each CAGED shape; for example, the sus4/sus2 hammer/pull-off notes using the E-shape on the top 4 strings (possibly) sound good/are easier to play using the other chord shapes. Again, Fanx! a heap.

"That G chord, who wants to play it like that? It's too difficult." Once upon a time I was learning Jimi Hendrix's major chord and thought "what if I add the root on to the high E string." That sounded a lot better. Then I thought "why don't I add the root onto the low E string as well. Aaaaahhhhh that sounds lovely, I'll go and show this to someone." So I showed it to someone and they'd realised that it was just a G shape with a bar up the neck. Ah well, it still sounds great so I love playing it now.

Eight parts? I remember the first one. it seemed to be more useful for electric guitar players so I didn't even think to look for more episodes. Perhaps I'll have a look at one of the others. I won't watch this until I've seen more of the earlier episodes and decided how much of it is relevant to acoustic guitar.
@meadish
@meadish 6 жыл бұрын
I would say nearly all of it is relevant, since what they are doing is laying out the basics of music theory and relating it to a guitar, and in that respect, electric and acoustic guitars don't really differ, except that you have access to the higher frets on the electric, and some things are harder to play on an acoustic guitar (bends, etc).

What is the useful point of the CAGED system? I’ve tried to learn. Is it just to know there are other “useful” chord shapes later down the neck or to find chord notes on the fretboard?
@matthewhennessey5967
@matthewhennessey5967 6 жыл бұрын
It can add some variety and spice things up a little. You can use it to climb up the neck, but still play the same chord. It can give a cool effect, like you're traveling around, but at the same time staying on one chord. I have a much crappier version for 7th chords.

Well, this series is called "Rut Busters" :) Playing chords differently than you'd normally do will certainly break up your routine. If you think about it I'm sure you play different filler notes with each chord shape and if you always play, for instance, a C the same way then it will be the key of the song that dictates your fills rather than what the song needs.
@meadish
@meadish 6 жыл бұрын
Agree with the previous replies. Additionally, it is a good system for getting to know the fretboard of the guitar, and for you to be able to compose more interesting rhythm guitar parts by using not just standard power chords, open chords and A/E shaped barre chords - but also diads, triads, and larger chord shapes across 5 or 6 strings, but with only the strings you want ringing out. It also lays out how the different scales exist around each chord shape, so that when you play that chord shape, you will be able to add embellishments (like Justin started to get into in this lesson) or very quickly improvise lead lines around that chord shape. It will also help your ears to be able to better identify exactly *how* your favourite guitar-based songs are arranged - after learning and practicing the basics of the CAGED system, I can now often hear instantly what chord shape is used in a particular song, whereas before the caged system I generally could only find the right chord by listening for the bass notes and using one of the limited chord voicings I knew, which works if all you want to do is acoustic strummed singalongs, but not so well for more demanding musical situations. Finally, if you have been playing guitar for a while and mainly learned songs from tabs and simple instruction videos, with CAGED you will be able to look back at those songs you've learned, with a better understanding of what is actually happening, rather than just relying on repetition and muscle memory.

Try taking a simple song you know that is in c major that uses open chords. Now play the song but using the next shape . So next shape from open c is the A major shape done on third fret ( still a C chord) now work out where the rest of the songs chords are using their 2nd positions.repeat this using each position of caged .so that's 5 positions on the neck you can play the same song (all still in C) .after that you can mix and match and move around the neck using which version of the chords you prefer .

It really opens up the neck know where the scales are along with the chords. CAGED works for the scale as well.
