“It was badly done Emma, badly done indeed.” I love how they spoke then.

Emma *facepalm* Miss Bates tragic backstory always gets to me. She was young, beautiful and rich once too. No marriage and losing her wealth just made her into an eternally optimistic, loving woman to others. She was so sweet.

Emma sees her future when she sees Miss Bates. She cannot leave her father and marry. Knightly loves his independence. Will he step in and take a chance to change Emma's future?
@lindathompson3982 Жыл бұрын
@@wednesdayschild3627 Though this thinking was never put forward nor even hinted at in the novel, these would be natural considerations for any other young woman, should it be that being married & being no longer in charge of her father's overall care be her most urgent desire; I'm glad she had an unselfish view of her situation & opportunities. As the story unfolds, we'll see how the author shows us--where there's a will there's a way! 😉

Everyone said how rough Mark Strong's version of Mr. Knightley is! But even when he was scolding her, just the same way as the book though, he actually wasn't harsh, nor even raise his voice. He was just straight forward because Emma did something truly bad and he thought it's because of the influence of the man whom he can not stand!

Frank Churchill character was the most undesirable out of all the renditions I have seen, with his overly flirtatious dialogs with Miss Woodhouse....He played the part well

This scene is so interesting in its undercurrents...the officious Augusta & her Mr. E, Frank Churchill & Jane Fairfax openly at odds, Emma & her arrogant cluelessness, the observant Mr. Knightly & his angry dismay, the vulnerable Miss Bates & the public slap she received... this scene stopped just short of being the 'perfect storm!' I call this episode: The Skirmish @ Box Hill. 🥺😠💣💥 .

I just watched the 2020 version of Emma, which is mostly rubbish, but the scene where Emma insults Miss Bates on Box Hill is the best done of any version of Emma I've seen. Most version, including this one, never really communicate just how badly Emma behaves nor how hurt and helpless Miss Bates is.

I love the 2020 Emma, its so lively and comical. I also like that Emma is even more unlikeable, her and Mr. Knightly's relationship is great, and I like that he is younger. Also the scene where Emma and Mr. Knightly dance together is far superior to other versions.

@@sparkle9909 Yes, I loved the dance scene in the 2020 movie. Just one nitpick-she wore no gloves. Emma Woodhouse would never! Especially a social gathering such as a ball! Although it did make the scene more intimate.

On the contrary, I thought from the casting to the finale it was extremely well done. I thought it was underrated actually

@@winterblossom9546 I saw a comment where it said that it’s because they just had dinner and that it was a perfectly good excuse because the director wanted to increase the visual chemistry between them in that scene.

Strange how Americans imagine a picknick in England at this time. But this Mr. Knightly is very good.
@schoo92563 жыл бұрын
They're all English actors and producers and the picnic was in the book, which was written by an Englishwoman during this time period. (Mrs Elton does sound American but she is meant to be from another part of England and that is what the accent from that area sounded like). I agree this Mr Knightley is the best though!
@p.s.1293 жыл бұрын
@@schoo9256 The Picknick certainly didn''t look like that :) There are different ways to imagine what a description in a book suggests. The best Mister Knightly is in my opinion this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5p7hZmbusyycac.html Although the actor is a bit to old. Sorry for my English :) but I enjoyed the conversation with you.

I am not English &, though 'close enough,' I am not from another era.Still, let me ask: w/o looking, do you know the difference between 'High' tea & 'Low' tea? Do you notice the rigid adherence to what is considered good manners & proper decorum? These kinds of particulars were the accepted realities of the day. Were I able to put together a picnic for this wealthy & priviledged lot, I could only hope my hosted picnic would b very like this; I think it's a lovely effort.
@lindathompson3982 Жыл бұрын
Con't...The part I would have done differently would be to send the help ahead so that most everything that could be,was set up before the 'picnic party' arrived. With no paper products or plastic wear, etc., there would naturally be a degree of formality. Good dishes, stemware, cloth napkins, good silverware and so forth. Aristocrats & upper-class folks could not & would not have picnicked like commoners. Again, that's the reality of their time & it's interesting to see how they lived brought to life in this way. It's just a shame so many present at this event decided to be rude and high-handed.
@gisawslonim97162 жыл бұрын
This picnic is a joke! Or did the director and his advisors decide to save money and not have a consultant on the set who would correct such idiotic flights of fantasy as the seating, the food, the entire presentation of all that is edible...looks more like someone's version of a great Oriental potentate's epic banquet scene than some modest Brits enjoying a summer outing.
