LOST AT SEA - Our Atlantic Ocean RESCUE [Part 2]

Our sail across the Atlantic Ocean continues. We were on the home straight, everything was going smooth and then it happened..... We spotted a single handed French sailor LOST AT SEA. Having being dismasted and stranded at sea for 3 weeks with no engine, we spotted this dismasted yacht being thrown around by the fierce swell of the Atlantic.
In part 1 you saw us establish a tow with the stranded vessel and then.... SNAP the tow line broke which then became a regular occurrence.
We managed to reconnect the tow every-time. After countless times of trying to summon the help of the coastguard from various Caribbean islands, each time getting a refusal of help. We knew it was up to us to get the lost sailor to safety. That was the only thought in all of our minds as we battled through 6 meter seas with 40+ knot winds. "If this was in the UK the ‪@rnli‬ would have been here - a sentence we would constantly say to each-other"
After a sleepless night, with the help of our moral boosting egret "Rodders" we all battled against the odds to rescue this stranded sailor. It's strange to think, that even to this day, we haven't even spoke to the sailor that was lost at sea.
Whoever says that catamarans are not a "seaworthy" "blue-water" sailing vessel needs to watch the video. Coco our Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 done everything we would expect from a seaworthy blue-water sailing boat.
You never know maybe ‪@WarnerBrosPictures‬ might want to do a film on our successful nightmare.
Haha! All jokes aside, we are happy everyone is safe. At the end of the day, we are all in this community together, and without each-other, where would we be?
Our goal 10K subs 😁😁 Every little helps, so if you enjoyed this vid. Please drop us a sub.

Welcome to our Sailing Vlog - Sailing Coco! After 7 years of renovating boats, we restored our Snapdraggon 27, sailed our 33ft Colvic Countess Monohull around the Med and then left London for good once we bought a Lucia 40 Fountaine Pajot Catamaran! We're excited to share our adventures with you and please click the Subscribe Button and Bell if you would like to be notified when we post our latest video!

20 foot sea state and not a whimper from anyone. You all functioned as though the sea was less than a meter. What a great training video on how to focus at the task at hand without needless drama. You all performed well together. Wonderful care and concern for your fellow man. A great adventure story for sharing with others in the coming decades. Looked like the hand of God was involved too. :-)

Thank you so much! Thinking about it we used to overly panic on our old boat when we got into sticky situations and realised it didn’t help anything and made matters worse! I guess it all plays a part into how we managed to remain calm when it really mattered, something we’ve not thought about before so thanks for the perspective on that ♥️ Yes we were so lucky that the lines didn’t snap during the night! We would have still reattached but it would have been tough! Glad it all ended well in the end and thank you for your kind message!

As we were asked a few times this week, we have tried to make and publish part 2 of our Atlantic rescue a few hours earlier! Editing this video brought back some many memories. Both good and bad, but an overall feeling of happiness. We have received so many incredible, supportive and fantastic comments and messages from you all. We would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts! We weren't able to meet the stranded sailor as he was unvaccinated and had to quarantine for 2 weeks in Grenada. As of yet we haven't been able to get in touch with him, nor have we heard from him. We have heard from others that he is doing well and safe and we believe a fundraiser was established to help him repair his boat. We will either do a live stream or a conclusion video to talk about the entire event in detail. Let us know what you guys would prefer. A live stream or another vid. Thanks again ♥♥

I spent 5 years in small towns in china (2-5 million people), The most people do for you out there, is if they hit you with their cars, they drag your body out of the road and leave you on the pavement so they can keep on driving in the road. Ive seen things that really question if humanity is worth saving. videos like this pick up my shattered soul.

Well done indeed. Was worried your deck cleats would rip out. I for one would have moved heaven and earth to find you, thank you profusely, and compensated you for your fuel and damages. I once helped a French cruiser who went on the reef in Greneda. Never got a thank you from him either. I have to say it hurt a bit, but I convinced myself the man just went through the most traumatic experience of his life and lost his home. I was merely inconvenienced and my only cost was my time and a few cuts and bruises. You should be proud of what you did and know that your efforts are appreciated by your fellow cruisers.

Yes we were really worried when we tied the initial line, it was a horrible sound! Once we got the bridle rigged up it was much better but sometimes when we tie a line to shore the snatch brings us back a bit! But it'll soon pass and we were so happy that we were there to help the sailor. Sorry to hear that you never got a thank you either.. it does hurt a little but at least we can sleep knowing we did our best and that's the main thing!! Thanks so much for sharing your experience too! It's comforting hearing a similar situation!

From my experience too...you just don't get thank-yous and i now realise its better that way. because you didn't do it for a thank you anyway. its more humbling that way I feel.

The unwillingness of the Coast Guard to assist with the rescue, not answering their phones, showing total disinterest in a major emergency at sea, should be broadcast across the sailing community and maybe Trinidad and Tobago, Granada should be blackballed for at least a year and see if they will appreciate the tourism Dollars they obviously have taken for granted. Shame! You guys should be awarded the humanitarian award of the year. You should be proud of yourselves. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

You have done some great work it is great to have mariners like you out there. However, do not be so quick to judge the Coast Guards response. I note they said they are unable or are not in a position to help. I would not be surprised if they simply did not have the fuel to make the trip. The pandemic has cut revenues across the board. but either way, it is a sad situation.

We had an engine failure off the Pacific Coast of Mexico a few years ago. No seatow, no RNL nor any coastguard serve that coast and at that time there was no wind to sail ourselves out of trouble. We asked passing fisherman for help but that help was limited to getting us to the beach. There was commercial traffic (tankers etc) well offshore but their help would similarly be limited to a personal rescue. Moreover the nearest cruisers were days away. Fortunately we were able to drop an anchor (we have a 500ft rode for such emergencies) and a local fishing boat got us to shore but what to do then? We were directed to the nearest port captains office and explained our situation to which they replied "not my problem"! You really are on your own out there - a good reason why cruisers often adopt a buddy boat.

You literally saw half the Grenadian patrol boat fleet on this video. They came out well beyond their territorial waters to rescue a random foreigner. And you want to shame them for that? Shame on you. How spoiled do you have to be to think that ANYBODY owes you a rescue, much less a broke developing nation with zero ties to the sailor, the boat, nor the patch of ocean he was on? I suggest you stay in your recliner where you can safely complain about things you clearly know nothing about.

Absolutely. I have saved lives at sea now on three different occasions. One instance the guy waved at passing boats and they ignored him. I couldn’t believe it. Even though I was on a sailboat with deep draft. I risked running aground to rescue 3 guys clinging to an upturned boat. These smaller power boats could have easily rescued them. I stood mouth agape watching them go by.

You guys operated in the true spirit of mariners Doing the best you could with what you had speaks wonders. This video also illustrates some of the shortcomings of new technology. I was a U S Coast radio operator in the 1960s and 70s and answered a number of distress calls on the old 2182 Khz from some vessels that were several hundred miles away. 2182 was busy and a lot of static but it was reliable and had tremendous range, especially at night. Well done all. I’m a lifeboat helm, you guys did an amazing job (and well done on taking the common sense approach every time, ‘ no life is worth a cushion’ ) I’m sure the skipper will be in touch with his thanks. The risk to your own life to save him should not be under estimated. Lines under tension are lethal. You did everything you could to ensure safety. Well done 👏👏👏👏

Wow thank you so so much for your comment. Hearing your professional opinion has given us a lot of reassurance since posting the video and so glad that you believe we dealt with the situation well. Thank you so much for taking the time out to message us and thank you for the work you do too

@@SailingCoco great effort all round. If you ( God forbid) are ever being towed, a great way to reduce snatch is to tow the casualty vessels anchor. I can’t imagine how on Earth you could have explained that to your casualty though. Again - Well done all.
@SailingCoco
@SailingCoco 2 жыл бұрын
@@badgersupdate thanks that’s great to know!! We will do a follow up vid this week and mention what you’ve suggested so others can know too if ever in a towing scenario! Thank you!

Also great that you got him to put on his life jacket . In times of distress it’s too easy to let your guard down. It looked like he had made his own towing strop from the Jib winches forward in a loop. A great way to spread the load and reduce chaffing from the casualty vessels cockpit by paying out on one winch while winding in on the other (every 1/2 hr or so).
@SailingCoco

@@badgersupdate That is another great point! Shame we missed it and only saw this now otherwise we would have included this also in the video we just posted! We will probably do a write up about this on our blog at some point and mention this also. Thank you again!
