Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Who remembers the epic battle of our childhood known as NSYNC vs Backstreet Boys? Cause boy do I remember it. But what I did not realize was that it was all fake. It was orchestrated by one man who was raking in the cash from both bands. Today we get into that and much MUCH more about the dark history of boy bands, from when they started to where they are now. And let me tell you, it is QUITE a tale.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my KZfaq for the visual side of things.

Girls aloud touched on what they went through in a book. They never put much info in. We all thought they went to this great life, nope they were put in a house together, left alone for days at a time, with no contact & no suport. Its not like they could even go out. They were doing their own hair & makeup for gigs & they still looked hot. Yes theyv made their money now, only once they left simom cowell. Young kids will sign any contract when his label is telling them they will be stars. Laywers should be on standbye to help youngsters on these showes.

Kpop has a whole dark history from which a lot of people could be easily accused of a lot of crimes that go across de border of inhumanity. It's very crazy and the kpop fans that get mad when calling this out are the obsessed ones that also need help, this is clearly a red flag in the industry that many artists from the same have mentioned which left them with trauma for lifetimes. It gets even darker. We all know the story of Lyle and Eric Menendez. The two brothers who killed their parents and are now serving life in jail. Well, their father José Menendez was the CEO of Sony Music at the same time Menudo was formed. You can already guess where this is going. José abused his sons and the boys from Menudo. Till this day, former band members including Ricky Martin refuse to talk about José Menendez. Edit to say: Menudo is coming out with a documentary on HBO Max discussing all the abuse they went through. Its very sad and disturbing but a real eye opener to what actually happens behind the scenes.

honestly, I've been a kpop fan for quite some time and the dark side of it is horrific. Everything from how companies starve and abuse their trainees, the way obsessive fans are encouraged to mistreat the idols cause its profitable, the amount of control the companies have over the lives of the idols, etc is all just so horrific and sad to see. It itself could also become a whole dark history episode even though it's not really history cause it still happens.

@hleebeg

of course it's not always the case but a lot of the time the parents are abusive to an extent as well. Relying on their kids money and making them work, not advocating for them when they are working more than they should. using their kids like a commodity. a great example of this is Jannette McCurdy or even Britney Spears. you can't be there constantly with your kids but you need to have a relationship where they can tell you when things are going on or something doesn't seem right.

This is so true! As a gen z, I was and am a One Direction fan (directioner) growing up (I feel like everyone should have that fangirl phase growing up:) and I really loved it) and the torture they went through with the toxic management, the overworked schedules, the toxic continous criticism, the comparisons, the need to fit in with the the stereotypes set... were endless. One of the many causes why boy bands, once the members become older and gain control (or more like realise the right they have to their own control) break up and end up pursuing solo careers.

Before watching all of their videos - ie music videos, interviews, and performances. 90s didn’t have KZfaq so , I guess there was more opportunities to meet the groups. Seeing it from the start till now and how it translates to bb practices even now is really interesting. From the first Quartets to The Beatles, Back Street Boys then One Direction, and BTS is a really cool thought. And that’s just boy groups I wonder if there can be a version with just the girls.
