This video shows you how to manually set the engagement point of your vehicle's fan clutch. This will correct over-heating issues (because the fan is not engaged) or excessive cooling (because the fan is always engaged).
Over-heating will damage your engine and excessive cooling will result in high emissions and reduced mileage. This tutorial applies to most vehicles that utilize a thermostatically-controlled fluid type fan clutch. This does not apply to electric fans and hydraulically-operated fans.

Thanks for the video. I knew they could be adjusted as I did once on a 76 cutlass years ago. This one in your video is not as tricky as that Cutlass one.

Great informative vid Robby! I was about to weld strips between the hub and bolts to lock the miserable thing up. I'll see if the spring moves (or is frozen with rust) first.

So i have the other problem my fan clutch stays on till i hit 4000rpms in my Nissan 720, and i cannot adjust any further clockwise, the fins wont hold the spring.

Sometimes spraying a little penetrating oil directly on the center of the spring can help free up an unresponsive fan clutch. If you rotate the spring one notch clockwise, it should engage at a higher temp point. Keep in mind, that doing so would not fix a fan clutch that is stuck on all the time (747). Fan on all the time=loud/ bad gas mileage. Fan doesn't come on at all=overheat/fried engine. If it's hot outside with the a.c. running, a good fan clutch will be engaged and you should expect to hear that "whooshing" sound. Hope that helps-

Sir you have no idea how much this blew my mind. I have a 96 240sx which has a fan clutch that died on me. I replaced it with an Autozone unit which suddenly would engage all the time and stick til 3-4k rpm whenever i was stopped and took off in first gear in cool, cold, hot, all types of weather. Replaced it with an OEM and same issue. My temperature is always cool as I even have an aftermarket fan that keeps it nice. So with me having the opposite problem of you, I would move the notch clockwise correct? Also terrific video, very thorough and very helpful!

Jesse Sharma yes if you rotate that spring clockwise a little bit it should come on later. it's kind of trial and error really until you find The Sweet Spot for that spring. experimenting with different spring anchoring points is the key. it can be frustrating at times if you have to take off your fan clutch to do it, but once you get it, you're set- thank you for the positive feedback I really appreciate it!

Excellent video. I have a motorhome on a Chevrolet P30 chassis with a 7.4L 454 V8. The notch at the end of the thermocouple is fixed however. Had to buy a new one. Ugh! Thanks, David 🐈

today the temp this moring was in the mid 60's and i noticed my clutch fan already engaged, it sounded like a 747. The clutch is a aftermarket (installed 5 months ago) and I changed it bc I thought my old clutch was going bad. My question is which direction should I adjust the spring (clockwise) and do I need to heat it up before making the adjustment? Do you think I should just buy a new fan clutch?

My fan used to be on all the time and now that it's 30 outside it spins but doesn't spin fast like it used to. I wonder if it will go back to spinning all the time when it warms up some

I do this from summer to winter for gas mpg and it helps alot in the winter time I can take off from a stop light and get down on it and never hear my fan before I adjust it all I could hear was the fan now summer time I put it back and u can hear it works great I've been doing it for years on my 2005 3500 express van 6.0 I get 11 mpg winter time and 10 mpg summer time the fan robs alot of power !!

What year, make and model is your vehicle, also what's the engine type and displacement? All of these determine why your getting so much reduced miles per gallon..

A fan clutch is supposed to only take 1-2 HP away and 3-5mpg. It also matters what fan clutch you are using, size of the blade and weight of the clutch fan blade. For example my buddy uses a Dorman 620-155 11 blade plastic fan blade on a Hayden 2794 viscous fan clutch(hydrolic mechanical). The Hayden Automotive 2794 fan clutch is 3.3-Lb and the blade is 3-Lbs so that's only an added 6.3 Lbs on the belt drive. If the clutch has very good bearings and is properly lubed and has minimal weight then you should get very little resistance on the drive belt and almost negligible MPG reduction and the 1-5HP loss can be circumvented by adding a better intake, air filter .

hi thank you so much for this i think this is my problem for that soft sand driving heating issue because it never gets hot other then that but at slow speeds on beach it goes up and i dont here that fan roaring like it does when i turn car on i have alocked up one in shed but man o man its loud i was going to put on for beach trips but its that loud its not going on the car Thank you so much this is why i love utube it saves me not getting robbed from all these mechanics in australia but it takes people like your self to put it up on utube cheers bud love your work.

Gotta thank you. This worked for me. Stepped it back one and now after I warm up the fan roars like it should. I had almost no fan speed at 230°. I've got a new clutch and fan upgrade going in this weekend, but this is a great temp fix for me and confirmed my problem. Thanks again!

What about the fan clutch type that seems to have only 1-2 slots where one is usually glued in?

Damn, that's a great idea. When I start mine, it's sucking air the whole time it's parked, even after the thermostat opens at 195. I have a 4.3 2002, it gets warmer & warmer when towing a small but heavy as heck homemade 5x9' trailer w/ 200lbs in it. I cannot freely spin my fan after it's been sitting cold for a few days here in SE Texas where it gets pretty warm outside.

Anyone else notice that about 3 slots over (counterclockwise) there is what looks like a proper slot that the spring tab should be locked into?

You are correct. The slot is the original anchoring position. Moving the spring away from the factory setting will change the engagement point for the fan clutch.

They actually make fan clutches with this feature. They have 2 screws to rotate the spring in both directions.... I might add. If the shroud has gaps all around the edges. You're sucking air around the radiator\condenser. Those seams have to sealed off. I used rubber door trim to make a tight fit. Problem solved...

I appreciate your video. My problem with my ninety three ford is that the fan stays on all the time. It's very annoying and loud. I appreciate you showing how this system works. Sounds like I need to tighten my spring so the valve will open later. Only at extreme high r p m do I hear the fan finally shut off.

FYI- Those springs are normally pressed & epoxied in a slot and can't be adjusted unless you brake 'em free.

Interesting, while you're in there spray that center valve down with lubricating spray, they tend to rust up some and don't turn good. In fact, it could prevent the bi-metal coil from turning it at the set temps if it has too much friction.

I had no idea you could adjust these. I have an 08 chevy colorado, bought it used with 130k on it, while changing belts I decided to put in a new fan clutch. Now it stays on constantly even when it cold or im on the freeway, horsepower sucks and it sounds like a semi

It definitely sounds like that unit is defective. It should disengage after a couple of minutes when cold. They really weren't made to be adjusted, but my video is a work-around if you're experiencing problems. Move the tail (anchor point) either clockwise or counterclockwise (not sure which way on your unit) so it won't stay on all the time. Move it just a little, it doesn't take much. The quality control on these aftermarket units aren't great. Hope that helps

Less noise clockwise to the right more noise go counterclokwise...more cooling auto parts store thermostat they are usually wrong and run much cooler than a dealer thermostat...worked for me..

First Last I know that many aftermarket radiator thermostats have cooler temp options from stock. Example: 195 degrees stock with an optional 180 or 160 degree thermostat. Once you start running cooler temp thermostats you may run into performance and mileage/emission issues.

I unbent th3 coil a small amount so my fan doesnt run constantly...it dont take much...

Chevy Silverado 2500HD does NOT have provisions to do this spring adjustment. No slots to move the spring. Aftermarket $75, OEM dealer $271 fan clutch. I have tried the after market and the truck overheated in the drive thru waiting for my meal. Fan clutch never engaged; return the part.

It's frustrating that some aftermarket fan clutches have inconsistent build quality. I noticed that your clutch has only one anchoring position, as you mentioned in your comment. I wish you the best of luck in solving your overheating issue.
