Helped my dad and all these booth owners clear out a huge antique shop once. The men carried out the big stuff, the women wrapped and boxed all the little stuff. We didn't want to lift the heavy shit and the men certainly didn't want to play around with the tedious shit, and nobody had to designate tasks, everyone just fell into their roles. The women weren't less than for not being able to carry the massive wood dressers. We did the part that we could to the best of our ability and made less work for the rest of the group. This is teamwork; playing to strengths, not oppression. It's what gender roles have always been about.

As a young married woman there is nothing more comforting than knowing my husband will stand up for me to anyone, even if the result is him winning or losing a fight.

As a 24 year-old young woman who also lives in a state/area where human trafficking is a major problem, I definitely feel safer when my father or brother are with me in crowded public places. Due to my independent nature, I kinda hate that I feel safer when the men in my family are present, but there’s no denying that I am safer in their presence than I am alone in many cases. I’d much rather be safe than sorry, especially nowadays in this crazy world, so I’m willing to forgo my sense of independence in order to ensure my safety.

When my husband and I walked, he always walked closest to the road. I lost him 15 years ago today. He had an unspoken way of protecting me and I loved it💔 I miss him and the comfort he gave to me by just being here.

I 100% feel safer with my husband home. I remember before he started his own business, he worked night shifts and I absolutely hated it. We aren't even in a high crime area and I do legally have a gun (a few) and I know how to use them. But just having him home at night was especially comforting. When a hurricane is coming, my husband gets us ready and prepared. He steps up to keep his family safe. When shit breaks down in our home, he does his best to fix it. He knows what he can't fix and will hire someone. Most times he can fix things. Thank God! I feel safer when my husband is home. Now don't get me wrong. I watched some Eagles nesting cams this last spring. One thing that was fascinating is that the MALE eagle, by and large brought the large sticks and constructed the nest. The female then fiddled with the fine points, moved one stick to the other side, brought the soft grass and other stuff to make sure the chicks were warm. Even in the animal world, they have the same sex roles.

An assignment I give to young ladies who appear in my office to complain about men and how privileged they are is to simply observe what they see men doing as they go about daily life. Invariably, it’s the road crews, linemen, hvac , electricians, tree workers, plumbers, roofers, masons, pavers, etc… who are keeping everything going, and are always men. Occasionally women are part of a crew , but it’s rare and they aren’t doing what they guys do.

I think we need equity in the sewer maintenance workers! I'm sure there are thousands of strong women waiting to delve into the sewers!

The main thing women need protection from ... is predatory males. That being said ... I love men and am grateful for their strength. Men do feel safer with women, too. We back you guys up and we often help you make good decisions. Both help each other. We need each other.

I really don't understand the rejection of these ideals to the extent that people are nowadays. It feels so forced and disingenuous like 'look at me and how progressive I am'. In fact, my little brother (who is college age) is gay and 16 years younger than me. When he visits my apt he takes out my trash and if he sees a spider in the corner he takes care of it for me when I'm not dating anyone. There are so many videos online of women discussing solo travel and one of the main things they talk about is that they sometimes reference a non-existent male partner that's on the trip with them or they wear a fake wedding band to deter criminals. Look at the tik toks of women showing what they buy to protect themselves when they live alone; regular alarms, door stop alarms, locks that secure your door from inside, pepper spray, small knives, baseball bats etc. When I was in college before I had a car I would have a safety officer from campus come pick me up when I got off the train late at night after work two blocks from campus so I wouldn't have to walk in the dark. Yes there are some things about gender roles that are outdated (look up where the phrase 'rule of thumb' comes from) but you can't deny the roles are separate for a reason and they serve a purpose. I have seen first hand in my own family what happens when men don't provide and protect women and children. It's damaging to the woman (she loses her softness and becomes less compassionate and kind) because she has to harden herself in order to survive without an effective and present male partner, and the children who are the result of such unions suffer in unimaginable ways (especially if they're boys) because their mom can't give them what they're lacking from a good, moral, male presence in the household or in their lives.

I’ve done all types of construction from masonry to carpentry to sewer and water work and also a mechanic. Never had a lady on the crew, not that we were ever opposed to having one, they just don’t wanna do that type of work.

My man protects me from spiders in the house - all I have to do is yell “babe” and he comes and takes care of whatever it is. I seriously genuinely thank him for this. Could I remove the spider from the house - yes - but am I so thankful my husband is there to do it - double yes. Amongst the many other things he does I’m thankful for, this is seriously something I don’t take for granted. Also - he may not be able to save me from a tornado, but he is always watching the weather when we’re in danger of one and he tells me when it’s time to go to the bathroom and take cover. My coworker lived in my patrol area. When he worked nights, his wife was home alone with the kids. I had a routine in her neighborhood of driving through all the residential blocks several times at night. In Honolulu we drove our personally owned vehicles equipped with police equipment, lights, siren, etc. My car was on the little louder side due to an aftermarket exhaust. Anyways, she told her husband that when she hears my car cruising by the house, she feels at ease and safe. Even several other neighbors related that they can hear my car cruising around at night but happy that an officer is nearby...😆😆😆😆😆

My husband is a 3 tour army veteran. He is all American Puerto rican tough as nails kinda guy but assist me in my women roles sometimes. He doesn't wait for me to sew his pants and I don't wait for him to screw things up. We swap roles sometimes. most of time it's him assisting me in cleaning, cooking, tutor etc. but 95% he does his roles and I do mine we are both well rounded,* But there is nothing more attractive than to have my man to be the provider, protector, handy man, smart, fun tough dad and hubbie. I went to visit my mother who has been living alone for a few years and I arrived in the evening. We were supposed to spend the day together, but she slept all day. It never happens to her, but just having a man in the house made her sleep for 12 hours!

I don't feel safer that my wife and kids are in the home but they do make me feel not afraid. Because I know exactly what I have to do if something happens, which is lay down my life to protect them if necessary. Whereas when I'm home alone, hiding if danger comes is an option so there is less feeling of assuredy. Hope that made sense.

My mother is widowed. I recently gave her my older car (and got a new one, boo to the yah). Old car still said "Proud [State University] Dad" on bumper sticker. I offered to remove it; Mother (grandma of my college student daughter) said no. "I want strangers to believe that a man normally drives my car." Gender roles explained, right there.

Boomers may be the last generation where gender roles were stressed. Even the mothers took an active role in it. One of the fondest memories of my mom concerned this. We lived on navy base housing. Every tenant was obligated to keep the lawn cut. Only males were allowed to borrow lawn mowers from the base. I, as a 13-year-old could, but not my mom. My mom told me it looks like fun to cut the grass and wanted to try it. I insisted to my mom that she as a woman should not. I told her I would cut the grass. My mom could have organized a protest to allow women to cut the grass. But no, she had a look of satisfaction that I was going to take on the role of a man. She allowed me to cut the grass. Can we take gender roles to an extreme? Yes. But, women of that time believed the development of boys into men was a higher goal.

As far as what do women need protection from, how about other men? So, single woman here, single mother, living in the literal woods where we get bears and cougars. I feel safer HERE walking around at night by myself (with my cats trailing me, of course) than I did as a single mother living in a city. And my stupid front door frame was so poorly done that I can't properly close the door and I have to use a stopper to prevent it from being opened from the outside (like from my cats). And yet I feel SAFER HERE with bears and mountain lions and no proper door by myself than I did in the city, even when my brother who is 6'6" stayed with me. Other people are the GREATEST threat to a woman these days. THAT is why men are needed to protect.

I was in the hospital a few weeks ago and after one week they told me that I needed to stay one more week. Earlier in that morning my bride called and told me that she missed me so much and wasn’t sleeping and was generally slowly losing her mind. I called the nurse and told her to get a Dr. in there quickly and when he got there and told me that I’d be just fine if I went home. I told them that they had one hour to process me out, and yes I’m ok and so is she!!!!

I'm a woman and I'll tell you what, I feel TEN times safer with my boyfriend, my mom begs me to keep him with me and never go alone, cause I live in a dangerous city, Portland Oregon. Also when it comes to gender roles.. due to a traumatic incident I became unfertile and I'm only 24.. what does that make me ...? Sometimes it makes me feel utterly worthless when it comes to women being called "baby makers." I know I shouldn't care.. but it still hurts a lot. My husband is a construction electrician. He loves it and is amazing at it! He once had a female foreman (boss) who made everyone’s life hell. All she did was talk down to everyone act as if she were the smartest person in the room. Obviously, she felt insecure as a female leader in a male dominated field. She ended up being let go 😅

i remember having a conversation about this 10 years ago with a woman at my university who i would not classify as a feminist and basically her views on gender roles was she was just lazy. she didn't want to do any women gender roles but she still expected men to cover all of their gender roles and take care of some of the female gender roles.

Until you’ve been married for decades; you have zero idea how much spouses do for each other. Just sleeping in an empty house after my dear husband died was insanely vulnerable. Then Covid happened 2 months later. I’m smart, strong and capable of handling my shit; but the whole widow thing was a nightmare for the first 3 years. I’m moving into year 4, and I’m a bit better. But I would still crawl across broken glass for the privilege of scrubbing a bus station restroom with him, if it meant 5 more minutes.

The idea of submission is interesting, and I think the feminists get it twisted. A woman should only submit to a man whom she believes is a good leader, not just to any man. My dad carried a shotgun around everywhere when my older siblings were growing up. It was to protect them from polar bears when they were cherry picking or chopping wood. I wouldn’t have trusted my mom to do that because she hated to see things killed. She would cut up whatever animal my dad brought home though

AND actually my grandfather from my moms side DID protect me from a snake!🐍 He cut its head off with a machete(sword). And my great grandfather from my grandfathers side protected my father when he was a child from a tarantula that had gone into the bathroom. He also sliced it with a hatchet.

My husband and I were camping once in a huge National Park. It was well past midnight and we had only seen one person near us camping too. Well shortly after we turned our light out I heard rustling in the leaves behind our tent. I ignored it at first but I quickly realized it wasn’t an animal. It was heavy footsteps that were creeping from behind our tent and was coming around our car to get to our tent door. Well, I hate to admit it, but I froze. I was so scared that someone was coming to rob us or hurt us. I quietly tapped my husband and he immediately was on alert. We had brought several guns with us to go to a nearby shooting range. The closest one to him in the tent was his AK. He grabbed it and racked it making that bone chilling sound that let’s whatever is around know he meant business. Half a second later footsteps were thudding away. The next morning the man who had been camping nearby was gone and I’m convinced it was him. After that day, I realized just how safe I’d felt having my husband, who was only my boyfriend of 3 months at the time, with me. And for the last 12 years he’s made me feel safe and protected everyday. ❤ men are absolutely needed, and any one who says otherwise is an idiot.

I wish more men today did take on the protector role. I have to say that I often don't see it. I've worked at bars where paid security guards let women be assaulted and stood by and watched. One time I actually had to punch a guy in the face to get him off of my friend and the male security guard said it wasn't worth it for him to put himself in danger in order to protect her. Another time I was in a car with two female friends and we saw a man beating up a woman down the street. He was throwing her into a concrete wall, punching her, and screaming at her. We started screaming at him to stop while we called the police. We saw other men on bikes start silently circling around them and they did nothing to try and stop the assault. We continued to scream until the woman started running to us and I opened the car door and let her in while the men followed. We drove off and I was able to see that the woman was covered in her blood. She was stunned that we helped and she said those men on bikes were her boyfriend's friends. I've seen time and time again men sit back and do nothing when help is needed. I know that this isn't always true and you are so right about men being construction workers and all of that stuff. I'm just saying that we have a masculinity problem right now. Many of the men I have seen stand by are men that would think of themselves as manly men. They may go to the gym and talk a big talk, but when it counts, many of them fail to protect those who need it.
