it might be true that the performance differernces between 24 and 32 cores are not that significant based on current testings and utilities, App developers and production ecosystems are still optimizing and trying to adapt to the new Apple sillicon architecture and development environment. That being said, the extra cores should shine when the developers are more optimized for apple sillicons and this is guarenteeed to happen in the future. If you want your mac to be more sustainable and more competent for long term usage, extra 200 dollars for performance that you cannot increase ( cpu, gpu, ram, you can alwasy connect to external storage) is not an unreasonable investment.

When the store opened for ordering, I noticed the 24 core model, that was simply the best choice for me. Agonized over 2TB or 64GB of RAM, by the time I decided, the ship date had slipped into December, so I stuck with the 1TB, 32GB model. So far, it has proven to be a great choice. The M1 Air I had, beat my TR machine, this 24 core beast has me stripping out my drives and repurposing them for use in an external enclosure. Love watching your videos, thanks for the shout out.

Got mine nearly a month ago - it replaces my 13" M1 - I thought long and hard over the specs and decided on exactly the same configuration as above. Very happy with the choice - it has really sped up the Affinity suite, particularly when working with very complex postscript patterns. I also think that this particular model might also maintain a better than average re-sale point in 3 years time!

I ordered my 24 core 14 inch a few days after launch and received it earlier than anticipated (original date was around thanksgiving but I got it Nov 11). I get a full day of battery working from home and it's an amazing upgrade from the early 2015 that I have which could barely handle video calls and chrome tabs simultaneously. It also charges so quickly.

I had a 14” 24 core. I ordered about an hour after launch and got it weeks later. I took it home and tested getting MODDED Skyrim running with crossover. It was not a great experience and couldn’t quickly figure out how to get mods running. After seeing the thermal throttling issues between 14” & 16” I returned it to an Apple store a week and half after receiving and ordered a 16” top pro chip with a larger SSD and 16gb ram. The battery life thing was a big deal and I saved money in the swap. People using that config didn’t notice any slow downs while daily drive the config running creative applications so I’m happily waiting for the new one arriving tomorrow. I have the 14” a shot and really liked it’s feel for travel which I do often enough plus I mostly dock my laptop anyway. However I’ve never had smaller than a 15” and the thought of long term video editing and illustrator use with all the panels… 14” is just too small. For $200 the 16” just makes way too much sense because battery for travel is also important!

Good points & video as ever Max. There's one thing we're missing on benchmarks vs workflow and we did the same with the 2013 Tube Mac Pro. It had 2x GPUs one to render the old job & one to edit the new one - concurrently. M1 Pro/Max offloads 2D video rendering to the encoders but nobody's testing this whilst importing/editing the next job. I think this is where the MBPs will leave even the most powerful WinPCs behind. It's a shame we don't show such a large real-world advantage.

When I set myself a limit of how much I wanted to spend to have some piece and quiet for the next 6-8 years, I pretty much arrived at the 24 Core GPU Model M1 Max automatically. The 2TB SSD was set, the 32 GB RAM as well so I was left with a decision on the GPU. The 24 Core put it just unter 4K in Germany (3899€) and mine actually arrived exactly as excepted. It was scheduled for November 8th (ordered it at launch day) and got to me that very day shipped directly from China via UPS. In the mean time trying a mid spec 14" m1 Pro with 16GB - works well 95% of the time, however, doesn't work for my workflow b/c only 2 external screens and I find the 14" screen too small when working remotely - 14" does get hotter, and battery not substantially better (~1-1.5hr / 10%), and does have slower external monitor switch on / or sometimes doesn't switch on the secondary external. Can't wait to go back to 16" and also the max configuration which seems to work much better with external screens.

I went with the 14" 24-Core model and it should be arriving in about a week. The main reason I chose it over 32-Core despite it only being a $200 upgrade is mainly battery life and also the fact that Apple intentionally slows down the performance on the 14" model due to size and power efficiency. Overall, I think you covered it pretty well, the 24-Core is right in that sweet spot where you get optimal performance along with battery life. Looking forward to your review when you receive yours :)

I bought the 14" with 24-core GPU. I can confirm that it runs at the full 1296MHz during GFXBench (I monitored with powermetrics command). I wanted the full 48MB system cache, so I needed the Max chip, but I don't expect to depend on the GPU (I'm mostly producing music and I'm a software developer). It's interesting: the 24-core version is achieved by disabling two GPU cores from each of the four 8-core clusters instead of disabling one entire 8-core cluster. Luckily, I ordered my machine a couple days after the event so mine arrived November 29, only three days late. But it spent a long time in a customs hold in Tennessee.

Thank you for another really helpful video! I'm sold on the 16", and leaning towards 32GB but undecided between 16 or 24 core. My previous MB Pro which was bought way back in 2008 used to get v.hot & noisy with the fans. I think the overheating/fan failure is what killed it in the end, although it did last 7-8yrs. Because of that I'm nervous about going for the 24 core. However, the performance clearly is better. Any advice? My use: - It will be my sole machine - I would like to keep it as long as possible (ideally 7+ yrs) - Image editing (lightroom/photoshop) - Video editing (predominantly 4k, probably not more than a few layers) - Visual effects (maybe some occasional After Effect use) Also, does the size of SSD influence performance or life span? Unsure whether to go 1 or 2TB. Trying to keep costs down but if it will have an impact on longevity then I would prefer to invest a bit more up front.

When I saw the plethora of options for M1 Macbook Pro processors I did the analysis and came to the same conclusion you did. 24 core all the way. I don't do much video editing so the extra encoders don't really matter to me. I did already decide I wanted 32 GB or RAM for future proofing. That made the extra $200 an easy sell for me. I made my decision a day after launch (so I didn't have any benchmarks to go by) I chose the 24 core primarily for three reasons: 1. understanding (in general) how GPU cores add to everyday performance (or don't) 2. double the memory bandwidth (probably designed to keep 32 GPU cores saturated but even more helpful with just 24 cores) 3. The ability to use 4 external monitors My 24 core Macbook Pro came from China on 11/23 as they originally estimated. I've been using it every day since and I love it! Especially the ability to extend my desktop to 2 (or more) 4k displays. I don't have any more monitors than that but it's nice to know I can add them if I get them in the future. I use my macbook pro mostly for coding. I have done some early machine learning coding. I only expect to do more of that in the future. I know other processors can be programmed to use GPU cores to do some Machine Learning calculations but, since the M1Max has a neural engine, I'm not sure if I will find an IDE that will allow me to do that. I've never been a heavy gamer but since I heard how gaming-capable the M1 Max is I thought I'd try it out. I've started playing Eve online and I'm getting 60 fps with nominal settings. I did notice the fan come on after a few minutes playing eve. I found that surprising after seeing so many performance tests on KZfaq where the fan never turns on.

It was supposed to come next Thursday. I hope you get one soon and put it through all your tests for a proper evaluation. With my trade in and the weight savings, the 14” with the 24 core Max was only around $56 more than a similarly spec 16” 16 core M1 Pro with 32gb & 2TB and made much better value.

Chip yields on the 32 core Max chips must be high. The main point of the 24 core Max, is that they are binned chips; they don't take perfectly good 32 core chips and then disable 8 cores so they can sell them at a $200 discount. Seems a bit odd, considering the double binning of the Pro chips. Maybe the single bin Pro options (full CPU cores, disabled GPU cores) are similarly backordered. Test data does seem to indicate that the 24 core Max is the price/performance sweet spot for the 14" model.

That said, I'm very happy with it's performance and this was a great video to illustrate that I'm not missing much in the 14" model. I wanted 14" for portability, but still wanted the power. The fans DO rev up when pushed, but they are nowhere near as loud as on my Alienware m15 Ryzen R5. For gaming, I keep the resolution down, which results in overall fantastic performance. I couldn't be happier with it. The fit, finish, form factor and power are perfect. I easily prefer it over the Alienware. Now I wish I could just get D2 Resurrected running.. but that's a whole 'nother story. Great video, and thanks for posting.

I think the number stats difference versus real world performance test results are drastic when choosing which CPU/GPU to pick for these new machines. With a plan on the same configuration, with only 1TB SSD, I'm looking at a wait time of 6-8 weeks. That's from Apple Canada. A base model of any unit, or in stock refurbished unit could be delivered in 3-5 days. I've had just about enough typing using a bluetooth keyboard with a 10" tablet, but there's little I could do about the wait time, unless I buy 2 computers, one I don't really need until the MacBook I do want arrives .... Well, in my case (without a working computer) it makes more sense to do without and wait, rather than spend over $7000 (MBP 16" + MBA M1 16GB/1TB), then sell the Air at a loss, or keep both. If delivery of the MBP were 2-3 weeks I'd return the Air - end of story. But that's not an option, so the final decision has not yet been made. 😂

I got my 24 Core 16“ MBP mid November after canceling my first order (selected the wrong keyboard layout). The problem is, how this chips are made. In the factory they produce probably only M1 Max 32 Core Chips. If only a gpu core is bad, it will get binned to a 24 code model. But if anything else is not good (memory channel, cpu core, more then 2 gpu cores, media encoder, …) it is directly binned to a M1 Pro or maybe even completely out. So the chances to get a 24 core in this process is kinda slim.
