I rode a Merican field train in 1978, but I suspect they were no more when Ross Sadler came here in 1979. This clip shows early days in the road yard when there was no mechanisation whatsoever. As if to celebrate, the mill named its locomotives and changed its paint scheme. This first set were named after local birds, later names were provinces of Indonesia. The evolving colours up to the end of steam meant that dating photographs here was straightforward.
Originally filmed by Ross Sadler on Super 8 sound, digitized through frame-by-frame transfer and enhanced with Topaz AI.
