Thanks for showing us a couple ways how to combine ToneX with Helix. Since ToneX doesn't have many Effects, it would be Interesting to see and hear how the Helix Effects could be integrated in ToneX.

Still looking intriguing so thanks for another look into it! Can't see myself using one with my Helix LT but maybe with the Stomp to both add some different amps but also free up a little bit of DSP for some of the more exotic FX that are sometimes hard to run together on the Stomp. The only thing I'm not liking looking at the Tonex at the moment is not being easily able to see which modules (Reverb/Cab etc) are engaged. Obviously in an ideal world you'd set it up before the gig but sometimes things need changing quickly....that interface isn't going to be very friendly on a dimply lit stage.

Very interesting video, I had not though about something like this. Just to add a more flexibility, now you run the Tonex / Helix combo into a PowerCab with the cab IR's there. LOL. As always, great video and you do a great job giving us all the ideas for tweaks and digging into the sounds we want / need.

Many Thanks for the time you spend to give us so good videos! Just a question about your 4CM : why don’t you use the end rounded block to send via send Helix and the first rounded one of the path B for the return? That way we don’t use blocks in the pathway. I’m quite sure we can always use instruments level in global settings to send and receive to the external amp sim ( Kemper in my case) Voila. Merci encore Jason.

I think this new Tonex pedal at that price is terrific value. Very interesting indeed. Could I drop the Tonex into the effects loop of my HX Effects and use the Tonex as my amp and the HX for all effects pre and post? That should work. The entire rig would be those two pedals into a power amp and cab or a frfr setup using IRs. And to a daw for recording.

Can’t you use single send/return block in hx stomp, set to line level and in the send/return block adjust the send level to compensate the line level, dim it and match with the instrument level?

I think it's because he wants the send to be set to 'instrument' and the return set to 'line'. These can't be set individually in the global settings.

Everyone is mentioning HX Stomp and Stomp LT; for me Tonex integrates perfectly with my HX Effects on the board with pre and post Tonex effects available. Great tip on changing input settings to insert Tonex drive samples. Im thinking Tonex on a music stand to manually change its presets per song or as needed; maybe some midi-magician could program hands free integration with a Helix device.

I also have the HX Effects and it works great with that too. Just use the FX Loop block, you dont need to do a Send and Return block.

I am trying this setup with my HX Effects unit, but I'm confused. When I go to global settings, the send and returns are treated as a pair, so both are inst. or both are line level. Any advice? :)

My setup is using Tonex with Helix using send and return. Not only I had to dial Tonex gain to "0", my helix send has to be -7.9db to match what's exactly in Tonex. Does it sounds right?

Hi jason, great video! I've just got my Tonex and I am matching with my HElix HS Stomp XL. I have followed your instructions. However, the mono signals out and in of the effect loop on helix has a unique level regulation . You can either use level or instrument for both simultaneously. I am not able to adjust the return signal to line level separately (or, at least, I can not figure out how to do that. For clean soouds this does not seem to affect that much the final result. Less so for distorted amp models. Furthermore,, while both units alone are quite silent, when I combine them togheter there is an annoyng hissing noise even when the volume on the guitar is turned completely off. This noise is very invasive on more distorted tones. Any stuggestions to a digital world newby? Thank you so much for your help and congrats on your fantastic videos!

Forget the stomp or helix. Surely makes most sense for those with hx effects. Tonex in hx effects loop and midi pull in all the amp modes to custom snapshots with effects from hx effects?

Jason, you put the line level [Return 2] to +6dB so to compensate for low output in the TONEX signal. Couple questions here: 1. Is this due to signal to noise ratio? 2. Is it because of low output of TONEX even if cranked to global VOL max there? 3. If [Return 2] set to instrument and reduced return gain level in Helix: Will it worsen signal to noise ratio? So in a nutshell: If you anyway adapt the return level in Helix, what´s the main driver to set the Return signal to Line? Really looking forward to your feedback if you have time for it. I have the ToneX pedal and now realize I need an HXstomp because I don't have much for effects pedals. I have a Boss Katana mk2 which I used it's built in effects for most things but can't use those with the ToneX pedal because now I connect power amp in and lost my effects. Really the only things missing now is delays and modulation. Distortion, boost and all that I get with the amps and presets in Tonex

I'm guessing you couldn't send a signal to FOH from the Helix with the Tonex built-in Cabs or IRs and simultaneously send a separate signal to a regular guitar cab with a power amp for onstage monitoring without the cab/IR engaged.

Burning two send and return blocks in the HX Stomp is pretty brutal... surely there must be a way to do this using the one send/return block, no way to pad the input on the Tonex pedal to accept line level? Or just boost the level enough on the return and leave it set to instrument?

Yeah it is brutal on the HX Stomp, but yeah you could very likely find a way to crank the output of the Tonex Pedal down and get things matched up. I will likely have a video about it soon.

You think you can also control tonex via Midi. I did the same with my Big Sky pedal. Hooked it to the fx loop of my helix and programmed the midi channels to switch presets on strymon.

Hey Jason, I'm using this setup, know my helix stuff pretty well, but am having trouble understanding how the master volume knob on the helix vs the master knob on tonex should work. I saw one video where you said you had the master on tonex at 10 at all times, however that wasn't using the helix. I have everything set up the way you described in this video with the 4 cable method. With return set to line level. Tonex Global input trim is set to 0. I have never changed any of the volume related Global options in the HX Stomp. Playing into a power amp with IRs globally off.

So the issue I'm having now is that the HX stomp apparently cannot set a different input type for the send and return independently. I tried sending to return 2 from the tonex pedal, and could only get sound if I set it to auxiliary. Then of course no post fx work. The only solution I could see for this would be to set return and send number 1 both to line level then boost the input on the tonex.

Okay, found the solution to the second part but I'm leaving this up in case other people run into the same problem. It turns out that I'm dumb and I used a return L instead of return R. Problem solved.

hey jason , set up tonex and helix the same way but there is a horrible jet engine buzz going through the system ,gate on helix wont remove it ,and gate on tonex has to be turned up quite a bit which of course affects the playability.

Hello Jason. I just purchased the Tonex pedal. I am trying to get it to work with my Helix now using your 4 cable method preset. I am using an frfr monitor for my sound which I have connected to the Tonex. Not sure if this is right? Or if the Helix is supposed to be connected to the monitor instead? My effects are only working on the first path up to the send 1. Everything after the return 2 is not working. Could you please help with this?

In this scenario, you want to use Tonex Pedal as you would a normal amplifier. Send from the Helix to Tonex Pedal Input, Tonex Pedal Output to Helix Return. Then FRFR connected to Helix output. Hope that helps :-)

Mr jason have a question , so if we are set up 4 cm with a tubed amp , which works great with your 4cm patch, theres somrthing im confused about , so,if we are running through clean channel of amp with say tube screamer or any distortion pedal running , is it safe to chose a amp and apply it for diff tone and amp sound and so on , with real amp running also , if that make sense, or in 4cm with resl amp running would you NOT want to add a amp from helix also in preset

Yeah in the setup with the real amp, you would no want to add an amp or cab block in the Helix.

I’ve had the gx-100 and you could do it for sure. I suspect with the boss delays and mod effects it would sound great. I sold the gx because I didn’t like the amps, but this would be a game changer for it.

Hey Arty, you could still play it through a PowerCab of you have speaker some or IRs on in Tonex or you could disable speakers and play through a real guitar cab. Much the same as the options for using Helix. Hope that helps :-)

@JasonSadites hello Mr Jason need help so i got my tonex pedal registered and the product manager up and the amplitude 5 down loaded and the v5.5 plug in down loaded but cant figure out how to pull up the library /control page to work on presets and all and im hooked up to pedal with usb , is there something im missing to get the control page to come up on my computer , im 56 and a idiot on computers lol

Why not just use "FX Loop 1" for the Tonex? I never use CABs or IRs, I always use a tube poweramp and a real cabinet. When I use any preamp pedal with separate "Send" and "Return" blocks like your example, I hear the clean poweramp bleeding through the mix.

Very good video as alway. For me I don’t see the use for the tonex pedal with the HX Stomp since you can make the Stomp sound almost identical to Tonex. I did the comparisions and really, based on the 5-6 tonex amps I have cloned with the Stomp, it’s no big addition for the Stomp, unless like he said, you need some amp that’s not in the Stomp. Still I get it that guitar players will want to experiment with the new Tonex pedal anyways. I think that it’s a great product for copying amps and pedals without having to dial it like on the Line 6 stuff, the presets are good from the start. Hear that Line 6.

Well if you have DSP heavy patches (like pitch shifting) the Tonex would allow you more options as it uses blocks but little DSP.

You can't use the four cable method with the tonex because it has no effects loop, you are actually putting the effects after the cab and mic at that point which makes no sense, just like the tonex pedal makes no sense without an effects loop.

@James Ryan yes. Because the Helix is being used in 4 Cable method with the Tonex pedal as the amp. That is very clear in the video. Nobody said or implied that Tonex pedal can be used in 4 Cable method.

That’s how reverbs and delays are used in real life production. Everything is added at post. That way you get the same effect without saturating a your input preamp/power amp and get clear tone with the cool reverb/delay effects. I see your confusion, and given how MOST PEOPLE use this type of products they probably should have added a fx loop… but the same could be said of UA / Walrus and basically any other similar solutions.

No thanks, I don't support this brand/company at all. I had a bad experience with them few years ago. bought their recording guitar software, stopped working, not once, but twice. I called them and it was a joke. trying to get them on the phone, not happening. their automated, voice, is like 7 options, to choose from and it gets worse. stay away from them.
