We finally get our hands on the best, the most expensive and the rarest RB block, the NIsmo GT500 "RRR" block that was developed for GT500 racing in Japan. So much heresay exists around the block and how good it is, but is it myth or fact?

I think we all just learned why Nissan never publicly state why their RRR block is better. The answer... it isn't. Purpose built for the task, and only expensive due to the limited production run for motorsport purposes.

@@MotiveVideo My take on it is, it's a perfect engine for 500rwhp all day everyday. With good water and oil flow. You build the engine around what it was designed for. You want a 1000+hp drag racing engine, go billet. why on earth would you go stock and risk spending more if it breaks? You want circuit racing limited to 500hp or perfect street runner, GT500 block.

Billet blocks are designed from scratch with 3D/CFD software, so they will know everything about it before it even goes near a CNC. You can't directly compare cast iron blocks with billet aluminum based on simple measurements alone. The way they behave under heat and stress is a lot different, billet blocks generally have improved oil flow, larger threads available for head and main studs with extra meat to accommodate them, as well as ductile iron sleeves.

You have to define 'best'. best for what? From an engineering standpoint, it becomes financially wasteful to design strength and capability much beyond what is required. The RB blocks meet the requirements for the applications. they destroyed the competition in all racing they competed in, which was their design goal. Nissan never intended for the 2nd hand, aftermarket scene to be driving 1000+ hp drags etc and hence never wasted resources on it. The 2JZ block is stronger and better for the latter, but was also never designed for it, so while we all love them for it, you could argue its design was less appropriate to its requirements and may have soaked up money better spent elsewhere on the car, rather than building in such a large 'factor of safety' for benefits the company will never see. Decades later, we know which one can do what in far more detail then the manufacturers ever did and which block is better for what. Its an interesting thought.

Finding a good and strong block isnt a easy task. There are 3 main things that keep your engine from failing. 1. Machinist 2. Engine assembler 3. Tuner An RB block has its weak points but there are other factors that keep alot of these 1000hp rb blocks still performing. Certain upgrades that need to be done with them such as billet main caps and girdles. Heat and pressure cracks bores thats why making power with better fuels is necessary. Fuel like ethanol and methanol is such a big game changer and why most GTRs are able to run 1000+hp. But nothing is unbreakable and no motor lasts forever. Everything has a limit and in the world of racing when limits are being pushed expect anything...

Great video, RRR owners will no doubt want a re-test with a different sonic tester, thickness tool and scales. Fact is the block was designed to make 500hp, keep engine cool, be lighter than standard for racing. Tick, Tick Tick. Nissan at the time only cared if it made it through the race and/or races for it's specified lifetime, once it cracks throw in another. They didn't design it for 1000hp plus full weight street cars, years of rev limiter bashing or for a turbo the size of your head strapped to the side pushing well over 30psi. If the remit was 1000hp plus out of the factory at 50psi boost it could've been done and it would probably handle 1500hp much like the current engines handle well more than the stock power and boost they were designed for. Money = Power, they landed where they landed.

That said, I am aware of a (former?) 1/4 mile Skyline world record holder from NZ using a GT block pushing 1,600whp. I guess with the inconsistency of their bores, there’s bound to be a few needles in the proverbial haystack. Fantastic test, by the way. Are the rumours of N1 and GT blocks having revised cooling channels to address cylinders 4-6 overheating during endurance applications true at the very least?

Just out of curiosity, considering these things are worth serious money, what are the odds of a counterfeit N1 block?

Thank you for sharing this video, but I wonder. We do know ultrasonic thickens measuring depends greatly on material type being measured and proper calibration of the instrument to specific material, and you did measure significant hardness difference between blocks, so how do we know GT block is not much more worse than what it appears to be form measurement you made to be quick, simple and digestive for wide audience. I did not see you re calibrated so I expect it should be some difference, since ti was so evident in hardness measurement that sound was so different even through video recording. For me this means Ultrasonic waves for thickness device also have significant change in speed of propagation what should change results. Just wondering, maybe you can comment?

Did you watch the video? We calibrated the sonic tester to suit the material of the GT500 block. We did it based on old settings and it read .15mm lower. Once calibrated, it was correct. Why do people always assume we dont do or know these things?

Can you test NA 2JZ blocks (vvti, non-vvti, fse)? Because 2JZ-GTE is very expensive it's very common practice in Russia to build 1.5JZ with NA 2JZ block. I'm told that only differences are in oil system.

Jonathon Petersen we are in australia firstly. Secondly, if one of our sponsors or partners are involved in an engine, then we can’t validate the time/money it cost us to make the video We need 300,000 views for the video to pay for itself and that’s if someone supplies the block ready to go, or, we need a sponsor to pay for the feature
