A video review of the Profoto B10 flash - putting this versatile flash through its paces during a photo shoot with a model in New York.
Hopefully the video shows just how elegantly versatile the Profoto B10 is - it’s a powerful little flash, and is also a powerful video light.
During this photo shoot, we tried the flash as well as the video light aspect of it. I didn’t run through the dry specifications in this video review. Instead, I wanted to show just how easy (and even how much fun) it is to use this flash.

Nice demo of the B10 as a constant light- but the most incredible part was you not getting kicked out of Grand Central!!

Thanks 🙏 for this review and “Do we get kicked off Grand Central Part 2” adventure 😄. At 4:44 I personally prefer the first image, just because the global light in the back is fully reflected, but that’s of course only my humble opinion. All great shots of course.

Danke, Neil for sharing! May I ask about the exposure settings, especially when shooting with video light?
@neilvn
@neilvn 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there Carina -- check the linked article. More of the techie details are given there. With video light, you're usually working in the range of f/4 or wider, and at 1600 ISO or thereabouts. It isn't as powerful as flash. neilvn.com/tangents/review-profoto-b10-flash/

very nice demo sir, I am intending to buy B10 Duo very soon, can you suggest me to go for A1 for triggering and on camera use, or else to have separate Air TTL remote?
@neilvn
@neilvn 5 жыл бұрын
A trigger would work very well, but a Profoto A1, even though more expensive, will also be an on-camera flash, or a back-up flash.

Fantastic demo video Neil. I was wandering how much editing was done. Hey, versatility is the key to this flash, not to mention portability, however would you say the price justify those advantages, bearing in mind the cost of regular Nikon, Sony and Canon flashes.

Very little Photoshop work. Aside from skin retouching, most images are pretty much straight out of camera / RAW converter.

This is the only good review I’ve seen, thank you. Now how do you think this would behave inside large modifiers (40-60”) in a studio/indoor setting?
@neilvn
@neilvn 5 жыл бұрын
The limitation wouldn't be the size itself, but rather the weight of the modifier. A modifier as heavy as the Profoto 5ft Octa, would not work for the B10 ... but would work for a B1 / D1 flash which is more sturdy.

Nice work and demo. A CTO gel/filter could also have given the warm light in NY CS, but flash draws attention more so than continuous light and might get you kicked out sooner?
@neilvn
@neilvn 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the flash would have been slightly more obvious. The advantage to using (the continuous) video light there is exactly that we can immediately see the change in power, WB and direction.

2:20 you say using the video light to match the tungsten, wouldn't you get better results by gel'ing with CTO. But great that without the diffuser it puts out usable light! Lower profile too as a flash would likely draw more attention to you.
@neilvn
@neilvn 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by getting better results with a CTO gel? Meaning using the B10 as a flash instead of a video light?
@whiterock1865
@whiterock1865 2 жыл бұрын
@@neilvn I'm saying that by applying a CTO filter to the flash head, then you change the color temp of the flash so you get the benefits of the strobe power over the "dimmer" video light. This is for photos of course, not video use.
@neilvn
@neilvn 2 жыл бұрын
@@whiterock1865 -- yup, that's what I would have done if I had decided to use it as a proper flash. But as you mentioned in your original comment, using it as a video light was less likely to draw attention to us. We have been kicked out of there before.

for the life of me I cannot understand why oh why a light of this calibre and expense doors not show the power level on the air remote??? If you have the light set at say4 and you alter the power with the air remote all it does is bro and Akers the setting in thirds of a stop but let us say you want it at 6 from 4 you don't get the number six in the air remote so if youalter par for a lot of lights it can get confusing? On my trigger on my camera I can control 5 different zones so if I have3 set at 32 and one set at 64th I can see on the remote the exact per I have chosen!

LOL most expensive video light in the world. I like your video... it's sweet :-). You checked that the b10 did not fire hardly every 2nd time? I really like the B10. It's a great flash(light). The only thing it would be great if you would see the exposure setting directly on the remote. Should be possible for 400 bucks. And if the b10s regulation would be more linear. But problem is that one stop on the b10 always varies between 0.3 and 1.2 stops. Butt finally it is an outstanding video light. And you can use it for camping....
