Short summary: 1. Move the ball slightly up in stance 2. Stand taller or shaft more upright and 3. Keep rotating for flow but do not turn the hands over, with an open palm thru impact

Dave Pelz always pointed out that the swing has one bottom point. Play the ball back behind that point and you’ll hit it thin. Play it forward and you’ll lay sod. You have to make some compensatory move to save the shot. Works great in the sand though! Just open the club face a bit, play the ball a few inches forward and it all takes care of itself.

I think one big reason why some people play the ball back far on those shots is that they are still learning about "bounce" and how to use it. They think that by moving it back it will help them avoid the dreaded "chunk," but in reality, now the leading edge will dig like a shovel. Great video as always, man! That practice room is epic.

Another side effect of the back of center ball position is inconsistent distance. Behind center is not a point, it's a continuum. Every time you hit from behind center it will be a slightly different amount, giving a slightly different loft and a slightly different distance. Center is always in the same place.

Its actually an XX yardage for each player based on their ability and set make up. 80 yards for me is an "A" wedge all day. My problem is 60-70 yards. Which I either choke down on the "A" or jump on the "S" wedge OR change the amount of backswing. Changing the backswing seems to adjust flight (ball height). These are all things someone should be doing at the range as they look at the 50 and 100 yard markers. Yeah it might not be about hero shots for going down range, but practicing these at the range helps you on the course. Its like practice for bowling, you have to shoot spare shots in practice and not just look at throwing strikes.
@Luvarby
@Luvarby Жыл бұрын
Mr. Short Game? I haven't played a round in over 15 years. In my Mini-Tour days, sir, I could hit every yardage from 115 yards in. It's all about how many finger widths you choke down on the handle. You note the upright stance and different ball position, which is great, yet there are so many holes. Each finger width is 5 yards. I would alternate between one, two, three & four finger widths, so I would have 2 to 3 club options per shot. Getting pin high is the key, and aim is simply where you throw your hands. Yes.... where you throw your hands.

You have answered two questions for me, thanks. One is why I occasionally shank pitches (problem #1). The other is not a problem I see with 80 yard shots, but rather with full irons, usually 7-9 iron. I will occasionally hit one way left, and long (problem #2).

Spin rate on ball position is a touch misleading. Spin rate is determined shot to shot by combo of angle of attack and dynamic loft. That back foot shot example is hit with still low angle of attack so it makes sense it doesn’t spin more. Back foot and deep divot will spin significantly more than forward and shallow divot
