I had an absolute nightmare flight disaster on my trip from Dublin to London to Skopje which ended up with me landing in the WRONG COUNTRY. Anyway here's a vid. Also kind of a travel vlog. You choose.

So you got weather diverted. Planes are okay with lightning, but you have to see the runway to land in most cases. If you don’t have minimums in height or range, you have to go to your alternate airport. There is a Baton Rouge plane crash where they didn’t, and there is a New York plane crash where they ran out of fuel. It’s a bummer, but they made the right decision.

Compression vapor in high humidity environments is actually fairly common on small aircraft like that. Spooky as hell but literally within specification. Even on the larger airliners you can always feel moisture in the incoming air around time of takeoff.

planes are okay with lightning, they're generally not okay with the weather and the turbulence that accompanies lightning, because the air conditions that create lightning also create super unstable flight conditions. No good pilot would ever see a thunderstorm on their instruments and think "oh, it's only a small one, we'll just go through it", they'll always avoid a thunderstorm when they can. Plenty of pilots have been caught out by a thunderstorm though and have lived to tell the tale, but it's always better to be safe than sorry, considering that landing is one of the most dangerous points of a flight I can see why they wouldn't want to land into a lightning storm.

Came here to say this too! They have to avoid thunderstorms with a 20 mile clearance even, so they shouldn’t even ever be close

The 40 minutes of fuel message would have been referring to the fuel to the destination and contingency fuel, but there is also emergency reserve fuel, usually ~45 minutes worth.

I think others have said this, but lightning isn't the issue it's downdrafts or downbursts that are deadly. They are common with severe thunderstorms, so pilots and air traffic control avoid them at all costs.

Sounds like the pilot had things well in hand. When he told you "we only have 40 minutes of fuel", what he didn't mention is that was probably 40 minutes to "point of safe return", not 40 minutes total. Once you went over the 40 minutes, you would no longer have been able to fly back to the airport you departed from, but still had quite a bit of fuel onboard. The thing with a storm for landing is that if you can't see the lights to guide you onto the runway safely, you can't land there. Those lights at the end of a runway help the pilot align the plane both horizontally and vertically during the descent. If you can't see them, landing is incredibly risky, and it's best to land elsewhere rather than take the risk. If you have time to circle and loiter, you can wait for a break in the weather and hope for an improvement of visibility, but the pilot will always have alternate airports lined up for navigation to them in the case that they can't land where they intended, for whatever reason. In addition, there may be some caution toward flying into electrical activity during landings. Historically, this was for the same reason they told you to have phones turned off - fears it could interfere with the avionics systems. These days, this is less of a problem, and asking people to turn their phones off for takeoff and landing usually has more to do with making sure people listen to takeoff and landing safety briefings from the cabin crew. These are important to listen to, as takeoff and landing are the most dangerous time to be onboard an aircraft, due to the safety margins (altitude) being so tight as to not allow a recovery in case something goes wrong.

That's the one, thank you for a more detailed explanation than I can give! I think it's really good to learn about on-flight lingo, physics of flying, protocols and procedures of commercial flights, it's not only helpful, it's just super cool and interesting :^) Basically, whenever you hear a pilot mentioning fuel, if it's not "final reserve fuel", you are fine. And that would only be used in the most dire of situations. Even without fuel or operating engines, some have tried and even succeeded to land the plane.

My mother was flying into Tampa. To make up time they didn't top off the fuel at a stop over. Tampa got a big lightning storm while I was there to pick her up. They could only land so many planes because they couldn't get to airside because everything stops when there is lightning. Crews can't get near the planes because the planes are safe from strikes. Crews are not. Because of the fuel issue, they couldn't circle.So they went to Orlando. Guess where the storm went. They did land prior to the storm and got fueled. Had to wait. Finally flew back to Tampa. 4 hours later. The fun of living in the lightning capital of the US.

Planes can fly and land in lighting but air traffic control will divert aircraft as landing conditions can be dangerous due to hail, strong wind and rain. Lightning can of course also strike the ground at the airport which can cause a wide range of issues such as fires, electrical outages etc. Given takeoff and landing is the most dangerous part of a flight pilots may choose to land elsewhere to minimise risk. Airline policy also varies and fuel load can force a decision.

Had to do the bus thing in Turkey after missing a connecting flight. I was stationed in the eastern part of the country and flying to Ankara. Spent 6 hours on a bus on some of the worst roads I'd seen in Turkey (which were not great to begin with back in the 80s) with a rest stop somewhere in the middle of the night. A USAF officer and I were the only English speakers on the bus (I was a USAF NCO myself at the time) and we were toast by the time we made it to Ankara. I wasn't mad, though, and I'm still not. Turkish Air Lines was a fine airline and the Turkish people were as gracious and accommodating as they possibly could have been. Still a rough trip, though.

Trying to land in a lightning storm is dangerous especially for a landing so that part I understand but I really don’t understand why the pilot said they had 40 minutes of fuel and waited so long to divert they definitely should have divert earlier and allowed everyone to eat and then take another flight or accommodation to their destination
@danikim235
@danikim235 Ай бұрын
40 minutes of fuel is very close to the reserve (at which point they should call Mayday for expediting the landing). Possibly the pilot misjudged the amount of fuel left or climbed to a higher altitude to preserve it, but it's still weird. Good that the plane didn't drop off the sky like the Avianca Flight 52, though!

My first...and last experience ever getting on an airplane was back in 2018 when some of my family and i flew to California from Austin, TX for my cousin's wedding when he was living in Orange County with his girlfriend at the time (now wife). Anyway, i thought i was gonna be frightened about getting on an airplane because i kept thinking the worst, but when i was officially up in the air, i wasn't even scared. I think the TV and the free snacks helped I'm so glad you made it safe. Geez, that flight must've been hell

I was terrified of flying for years, but when I actually had my first flight in 2018 I was already OK with it and pretty excited. By now I am a frequent flyer and somewhat of an aviation buff. I love hearing stories about plane crashes but I'm never terrified while on a plane. The only thing I'm anxious about is if I didn't forget to pack something important :)

We just flew to and from Virginia (East Coast) and had some turbulence. My husband HATES takeoff, he almost passed out on our flight back, heh. I don't mind takeoff, it's like a roller coaster lol. But yeah, turbulence, while I logically know is normal and even expected, fucks with my anxiety SO BAD😂. But Allegiant Air is awesome(they fly Airbus planes, not Boeing hahahah). They're kinda like the Ryan Air of the US.

Want a real annoying flight story. Going from NY to Amsterdam, and we get half way across the ocean, then we get announcement that there is something wrong with one of the engines, and we have to go back. We literarily got half way there, so the engines are OK to go back to NY, but not ok to fly to Amsterdam. We're exactly half way there.

This is normal for a flight captain/pilot to say, they are also very likely talking about the normal fuel, not the reserve which extends the flight quite a bit. They essentially say "we have this much fuel left" while also thinking "plus reserve" because you are not supposed to be even thinking about the final reserve or consider using it unless COMPLETELY necessary. This is actually quite a common procedure and, no, you wouldn't have crashed, they would have received intel from one of the towers to proceed down a different path and to another airport, which I assume...? is going to be happening at some point in the video? And I don't think this was the pilot's first commercial flight, they tend to have hundreds if not thousands of hours of flight experience before flying a commercial plane. I don't know what sort of plane you were flying in, probably not a large one, but still. Turbulence and storms can cause a lot of trouble when landing, landing is one of the most critical moments during the flight so, trust me, you would have been fine. They have very strict protocols they need to follow, they wouldn't have just let you go down and crash, they were making sure to wait the storm out as much as possible before diverting (presumably) to another landing spot. So, I think it was normal flight fuel + reserve fuel + *final reserve fuel.* The final reserve usually offers another 30 minutes of flight time for a commercial plane. Additionally, pilots have no control over the weather and they have no control over public transport other than their own plane. They do not know what sort of alternate transport might be offered upon landing at an unplanned airport.
@RobTheSquire
@RobTheSquire 25 күн бұрын
It's not wise to try to land during a lightning storm as the bright light could blind the pilots and could cause them to crash. Landing and take-off is done by them and the bulk of the flying is done by the autopilot.

I feel vindicated by what you said about RyanAir. People book the airline expecting luxury customer service and almost every time someone's told me about a "bad experience" it's just been them trying to sneak extra/bigger bags than the clearly stated allowances and getting charged for it. I fly with them almost every time I go somewhere and never had any issues beyond things out of the airline's control e.g. weather as you just described
@danikim235
@danikim235 Ай бұрын
Most delays are indeed not their fault - like strikes in France, the bad weather you mentioned, or incidents with birds. But these are made worse by the shortage of aircraft they experience due to Boeing being even more shitty with quality lately. I sometimes fly with Wizz too and so far I haven't experienced any delays, seems that their fleet of Airbus A320neo is sufficient.

Why, on Gods green earth, would the pilot say "Oh by the way, we only have 40 minutes of fuel...." then an hour passes. What in the actual.....????? But the upside is, you had an amazing experience! you got to fly above a lightning storm that's so cool! You're also from Ireland? I wish we could go to Ireland! we are about 80% irish linage living in Australia cuz yes... one of our ancestors was an irish convict deported to Australia for stealing a sheep because he and his family were starving! My Mum did the geneology and traced us back to the first Australian ancestor. But back on topic, dispite (sorry we are so switchy today, this post is a literal train wreck... ) dispite that it was a stressful experience but you are alive, yay, you got to see lightning from the air, yay, and you arrived to see your family. yay!!! What an amazing view of the city lights you had! You were able to let your family know you were ok by phone so that's a plus. You also got the chance to make this awesome video to share it with all of us. You also have an amazing cat. Our dogs are also criminals. lol. I think we as human beings, tend to look at all the bad side of things, and forget about all the pluses! Thanks for this great video and story. about five different alters wrote this post :D

Blimey that did sound a bit scary, I have only ever Flown to Dubai from UK and back in 2003 and on the return trip I was upgraded to first class early into the flight, I was in standard class sat on an edge seat in a middle row on a big plane and this bloke got his two wives to move and he kind of laid across the seats with his feet nearly hitting my chin, an argument ensued between him and the flight attendants and they moved me to first class, he was taken into custody when we landed and that was the last I heard about it, this was before the mobile with camera days sadly, also pre 9 /11 so he wasn't restrained on the plane but not allowed to leave his seat without permission I was told. My 14 other friends watched in amazement and were a bit jealous of my move.

People shit on Ryanair because of the delays, I don't think anyone really expects to be very comfy on a cheap flight (at least not in Poland). My recent flight back to Poland from Germany was delayed for over 2 hours because of a shortage of aircraft set off by an incident from the previous day when a bird flew into an engine. We had to wait for a plane from Poland to land first and then take us back to Poland. Ryanair should continue receiving 737 MAX-8-200 until next year (and 737 MAX-10 from 2027) but I doubt they will see many because of Boeing's problems with quality assurance and limits on production posed on them by FAA after the January Alaska Air incident.
