Good intentions of offering $20 to come cut the grass in a yard nearby.. What happened next totally surprised me, I really wasn't expecting what happened and wished it ended differently!

This is the exact mentality I have towards panhandlers. I’ve always worked my ass off to earn a dollar, why shouldn’t they. I don’t believe in handing people free money when they have the ability to work like the rest of us

My boyfriend's mother offered one of the people with these signs a job and they declined so fast. Said they "don't have time". If you really need money and someone offers you a way to earn it, wouldn't you take it?

@Daniel Hernandez Begin with the moneylenders everyone seems to have forgotten about these days. Here's more insight into scammers who aren't homeless: There are people out there who will take you home, put you to work, and then make sexual advances on a person. Or they'll suddenly have a bank error, a buddy who can't get back until next month, or some other scam when it comes time to pay. I've invited Jason to a dialogue, but apparently, he's either too busy or not interested. Always stuns me how self righteous people who pick on the weak or humble get, but won't lift a finger, let alone their collective voices to the people selling them bogus medicine, bogus religioun, bogus government, and all the rest. I've met hundreds of homeless on the road. Just like everyone else, some good, some bad. Been reprimanded more than once by God for judging them. Believe it. Or don't. Your choice, and largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. I seriously believe that nearly everyone knows, deep down, that the "upper crust" is UTTERLY disinterested in the welfare of their so called "lessers". Emulating them does not make one a good person. Christ himself didn't want to be called good.

There are hundreds of handlers in San Francisco holding "Homeless Vietnam vet. Please help." A Veterans group did a background check of 100 of them. Turns out that 99 if the beggars were never in the military. Only one was ever in the military...sort of. That one was kicked out of basic training.

I used to always run into this one homeless individual and eventually we'd get to talking and it lead to me getting to know a good chunk of the local homeless community, about a dozen of them who live at a park along the road I commute to work to. One time I asked one of the woman, who had been homeless for probably 5-10 years, if she would be interested in working if given the chance. A 9-5 job somewhere, get an apartment, live a normal life, etc. Her answer? Nope! Wasn't interested in working. Would rather lay in the grass in the park and drink all day. She's not crazy, either. She's a bit weird, has a bit of anxiety, but is all there mentally and could work. She'll tell you as much. But after a while, she'll go and make some excuse about why she can't work due to a traumatic experience. Panhandling at a street corner, I was told the woman makes $100 in an hour (Hence she'll panhandle for an hour and lay around for the remainder of the day. A man said he made $400 in a day once panhandling, but he usually does nothing all day and they split the cash from the hour of panhandling. That man is youngish, early or mid thirties. Physically fine. Intelligent. He understands how to socialize and could act perfectly normal when he wants. I don't know what he's given antipsychotics for (didn't ask, not my business), but I saw he had them so he does have a mental illness, but whatever it is it's under control w/medication. He could work. But he doesn't want to. Rather drink and use drugs. Weird thing about this guy, is he's not "addicted" to anything in the traditional sense. He can, and often does, quit drinking or quit smoking meth for weeks. He's one of those very rare people who can take drugs or leave them; he just chooses to take them more often than not. That's just two of them. Another woman panhandles for week a month and that pays for three weeks of a by-the-week motel room. Panhandling and food stamps and Medicaid and she's fed, clothed, sheltered, and given medical care. Doesn't want to work. Why should she if she can get everything she'd get from a forty hour a week job by begging for twenty hours a month? I could go on forever. Before I got to know these people I used to always give homeless some money. I knew they might use it for drugs and beer, but I figured they were generally needy, down on their luck and had just exhausted all their options and dropped out of society from depression. That, or they were mentally ill or hopelessly addicted to something. But that's not the case with a lot of them. They could work and function in society, but they wouldn't take a $50k an hour job if you offered it to them. So I'm kind of at a loss now at what to do. I instinctually want to help but I haven't given a dime to any homeless in a while.

If people can clean trash from parks, beaches, highways not expecting a handout, it would be a hand up. We don't know the back story of someone we just met. We make assumptions that may be untrue. Many lie by omission. I decided to not give and not feel guilt for not giving. They'll find another target to hit up. Saying no might be the best things you do for them. Social Service agencies are better able to help them achieve short & long term stability.

I live in a third world country where a lot of people are very poor, homeless, children sleep in the streets and I never give cash to the kids who are panhandling. I do give them food mostly and buy things from them sometimes. Most of the kids that are panhandling are working for someone. I also know some families that I help pay for their kids schooling, books and clothes etc. I do give money to the old and some who are disabled, but most of the people will work picking scrap cans, bottles, plastic etc. They are too proud to ask for a hand out, they'd much rather do something for their money no matter how poor they are.

Fair Question ( Didn't see an answer by you, Jayson, in the Comments ): Is 20$ a fair amount? Maybe it's a quick mow, a simple lawn, so I get it. That would be decent pay for an hour, especially. And anyone with self-respect would work for it. Otherwise, it sounds low and I'd be insulted if I was being given an opportunity to do a larger job and only paid the 20. I'm not attacking, but seeking clarity. Thanks.

I'd be willing to take you up on that offer homeless or not, I am willing and able and although I may be on the verge of being homeless, (not yet, but very close to it) I am willing and able. I wish there were more people that would offer jobs, hell I can't even beg for one right now, but I keep applying online. Fact is, whether people want to admit it or not, jobs may be listed, but getting those jobs is another world in itself. I apply daily and still have found nothing for a 2nd job sadly. Just about everyone on the street panhandling is either mentally ill or addicted or most likely both. Just because you’re intolerant of them doesn’t make it wrong. It is a problem that we need to address as a community and publicly shaming people on the internet is not a solution. I’m concerned for these people. They need help, because they’re not able to help themselves. That doesn’t make them bad people. -Mike, from Marquette.

One man and his pregnant wife walked to a Sonic in Central Arkansas asking for free food. The manger told them they were hiring, and the man said, " I wouldn't work at a place like this." This was after the employees had bought the couple food.

When does helping become enabling? When does loving someone become loving someone to death? When the family keeps bailing out a loved one who's engaging in self-destructive behavior until the outcome is jail, hospitalization, or death.💕

U r right I am in madison Wisconsin and they post up downtown to sleep and then bus it all over town durring the day and panhandle in the intersections. They had to pass a law they where not allowed to panhandle on busy streets but continue to stand at the walmarts amd other stores. They dont travel or most dont they have to many resources for them here. Then sadly in the winter we have so many that all the shelters are full and perople freezing to death on benches. Most r junkies or alcohalics anyway and then use kids or animals to get ur money!

You know what these people that rip you in the comments do they understand. My opinion of you I think it's good what you doing because you know what the people are really need the help that are really down low they're the ones that you could to help not these fakers that is scamming all it does is hurt the real poor that really need help and most of those people that really really need to help will not come out and do this and beg and ask for money most of them are ashamed if you want to help somebody or you people that make bad comments about this guy why don't you go somewhere the church go to your congressperson phone the family that needs to help and help them then and stop ripping him

Please come to downtown Milwaukee & correct all these damn homeless people.... I was once homeless & got myself out of it. The same damn people are STILL living on the street saying they need help. When in reality they are shooting up heroin, drinking beer & to fucking lazy to work. I confronted many of them when they've tried to ask me for shit. And find it hilarious that they don't realize that recognize me from being homeless & that I know their game.

Big city, I grew up in that county. There is a homeless problem. I won't waste my time showing what is there when it is the normal thing to see. Here in upper Michigan we set records for snow in the winter and these people are no where to be seen but randomly run out of gas in the summer. Total scam and not related to the homeless issue.
