Jason, I admire what you are doing. I was homeless, on the street in Los Angeles Ca.for over two years. I had no family or anyone to help me. I am bi-polar so I have been disabled for several years. The amount of abuse for the graciousness of others is astonishing. One guy was getting food stamps from three different states. So many told me that they were making a great living off of others, and that made me sick. These were strong able young men and women. I am a 56 year old woman who had worked all my life, so this upset me. I would go 2-3 days without eating. I lost everything including my car. I never ask anyone for help. I used my time finding a way to get back on my feet. In order to do this, I had to find a cheaper place to live that had open section 8 so I could afford a place to live. I ended up going to Virginia from California. I had one suitcase to my name. My life is finally on track now. I still don't have a car and it's been three years. But I am grateful for what little I have.

We have a group of panhandlers who work the offramp near my neighborhood. They are always "traveling" and need help. They have been "traveling" for six years! The worst part about it: they fake disability. The group is five or six people who take turns begging...and sharing an oxygen tank. It's the same tank, as it has a distinctive sticker on it, and my husband has seen them hand it over to the next "shift" when it's their turn.

One time one of these people asked ME for money. I told him to, "hold on and I'd be right back with something for him." I went into a local pizza shop, got a job application and came back to him. I handed him the application. He tore it up in front of my face and cursed me out. I called the cops telling them he threatened me. He was in the back of a crusier 30 minutes later. Apparently he had warrants.

I'm going to keep a sign in my car: will work for money. When approached by a panhandler, I'll hand it to him to use instead of a "need $" sign. Begging should not be the first choice to getting money.

My uncle lives in one of the cities you rattled off, that this guy inflicts himself on. We have a whole set of scam artists outside of the Walmart in Show Low. It used to be one old guy with his dog, but now that these other shitheads have seen how "successful" he is, we have a rotating bunch out there begging. It's unfortunately not against the law unless they're being aggressive. I'm tempted to ask the younger ones if they're Irish travelers. I saw the old guy in front of Safeway about two weeks ago, smoking and talking on an I-phone. Strange how he can afford a fancy phone, being all "homeless" and in need of strangers earnings. Real homeless and poor people tend to take advantage of help, not sit outside and beg for your money, all the while trying to play on your sympathies. I noticed our "homeless" beggars don't seem to be out there so much when the weather is bad. Strange how their poverty depends on whether it would be uncomfortable for them to sit outside.

I adopted a rule of not donating to people who ask for money or hiring people who go door to door to look for work. I also had a woman hit me up for a donation for cleaning up the parking lot of a local grocery store. I told her that she was doing volunteer labor as far as I am concerned, and that I had no responsibility for paying her.

When I was homeless I also still dressed nice and took care of my hygiene then best I could. You need to get rid of the picture of homelessness with people with missing teeth and unbrushed hair and dirty faces Becasue that is not reality. Most homeless people I know are very clean and dress fairly nice. They may be homeless but they still have respect for themselves. You need to get a life and leave these people alone. For most it's humiliating enough without someone like you rubbing their faces in their situations.

My brother knows of a homeless man that begs for money. He says he lost both of his legs in the war. My brother tried to help him out from time to time. My brother later found out that he was never in the war. He lost both his legs because he passed out in a snow bank and had to have both legs removed due to really bad frost bite. He knew he would get more people to help him if he told them he was in the military, rather than telling them he got drunk and passed out in a snow bank. I still feel bad for him because he IS homeless. I just wish he would tell people the truth.

I really want to thank you, reason is that in the place where I live we have a lot of panhandling. I live in North Carolina, Wayne County to be correct. My wife feels bad for these people. She at first told me that are homeless. I told her that I stumbled upon this ( panhandling ) on KZfaq. When I explained the way they operate. She started looking at these people in a new light. I told her that when you see two to three people in a certain area all with the same signs. There's a car waiting in one of the parking lots close by. These people have a good locations in the city of Goldsboro,N.C. mostly around( Berkeley Blvd, Sam's Club and the Berkeley Mall area ). The next locations are about a half a mile away and that is ( Spence Ave, Wal Mart area ). Yes they have the basic same signs ( will work for money, homeless, need food, etc.). Goldsboro N.C. wake up some of these people are driving better cars than I am.

Ok, for those of you defending these homeless people and scolding the uploader for meddling in other people's business, your heart's in the right place, HOWEVER! I've seen shit like this where I live. There are many people on the streets addicted to drugs or can't apply for Welfare because they have a criminal background (usually theft, burglaries, sex offenders or illegal immigrants etc) and they know they'll make more money off of strangers than getting a real job because the kindness of strangers requires no taxes to be paid. Professional Bums is what they're called, ok? The people in my neighborhood film them with their phones for neighborhood watch to alert people before they become scammed or ripped off. If they can't get money by panhandling, these same scumbags usually go in back ways of my neighbor's homes stealing bikes, break into cars or even take holiday decorations right off their front yard to pawn for cash. So this guy is looking out to prevent people from being taken advantage of. There is no excuse for begging. There are sources in America they could take advantage of to get back on their feet, but it requires work and they have to get off their addictions to do it, and most of them won't. Because they're irresponsible and lazy. The truth hurts. I have no sympathy for most bums I see. It took years for me to realize it.

I have given up to $20 at a time, $40 to a lady with a little boy that needed money for a room for the night or they were going to be sleeping in their car, plus bought the boy a happy meal because he asked his mom if she was going to get something to eat. I used to help out when people on the street asked me for money. I still think some of them need help. Now I won't give them money not even pocket change. I will buy them food or drinks at the place where there asking for money. You can tell who does need help when they don't want you to buy it instead of giving them cash.

I once saw a guy pull into a pharmacy parking lot in a Lexus, let his dog out of the back seat, and open the trunk and pull a backpack out of the trunk. I then went to the mall, shopped around for a while and came back to the same spot and found that same guy in front of the pharmacy with the backpack he pulled out of the trunk of his Lexus on his back and his dog next to him while he held a sign that said, "We need food". Do you think I gave him money. NOPE!

I watched a documentary about panhandlers a while back. And i remember the film stated that they average around 30 to 40 thousand dollars a year.

This is a common tactic used by the fraudsters to throw people like you off their turf. I have seen drug addicts do this to other pan handlers in Denver to secure there corner that are profitable. They would call the Denver P.D. and make up a story of a crime said people had done. Sometimes the cop would take the person to jail and the regular pan handler would take his/her corner back for the day. Common tactic to be aware of because the fraudsters may have you jailed for some trumped up charge.

I agree with you 100% I think most of these panhandlers all across the world are scammers but I'm thinking your time will be better well spent and you have the resources and the people in your Network, to change the panhandling laws make it illegal in your town your state get people to sign a petition not hard to do.
