Having a "floating" boat requires ways to keep unwanted water OUT and ways of storing fresh water IN... That's exactly what this week's episode is all about. From RE-plumbing our bilge pump to RE-hooking up our fresh water tanks, and more.
Hope you enjoy this episode and are excited for more episodes about the motor...because, well... there will be MORE!

You guys do absolutely beautiful long lasting work. Plus, you're doing things that aren't standard..so there's nobody to ask or KZfaq videos to watch to get help. That boat is one lucky girl. She's worth twice what any other 36' 1972 boat is worth, probably more. You have the evidence of all the quality work that's gone into her. I can't believe the previous owners had removed the floor and then epoxy/fiberglassed it back in. So much easier and better to do what you did and fasten it in by making screw blocks. Awesome work. I'm positive that any boat maker would hire either of you to do boat design.

Hmmmm, I never even considered PVC piping for the bilge. An extra idea (I can't remember where I first saw this) as an emergency pump was to t connect your raw water intake before the raw water pump (Of course I just remembers you switched to electric so never mind for you guys, but a good idea to share "Doh!") which has a valve leading to a hose gonig to the bilge so the engine can also act as a blige pump in an emergency. Looking forward to seeing your rain water catchment system!

Oh boy, I see this episode sparking conversation. I hear so many reasons why "not" to use ridged PVC pipe in boats....the main reason is movement and flexing, the other is flexible hose will only have 2 points of possible failure where solid pipe has several points at elbow turns and such. I've seen a couple of project boats have PVC pipe used but never heard how they held up...keep us posted.

+Sean T Only time I ever seen a PVC connection fail was when 1) no primer, 2) no cement or 3) not enough of either, 4) not enough contact area (not pushed in fare enough). Follow instructions and you will never get the connection apart without cutting. Flex hose is easier to install and less resistance to flow because of genital turns but much more expensive depending on application.

+Mazda rx7 yeah i dont see it failing ever...prob outlast the boat...only time ive seen it fail is in 0 degrees huge sump pump the line froze and pressure from pump blew it...and it wasnt even the pvc connections that really failed...it was a flex connection in line for easy servicing!

Great job! Alternate title for your series: "How to Fix a Sailboat On the Cheap". I have often wonder why others have not used PVC on their boats. Seems like a better way to go all around to me. Toss all those hoses that are expensive and degrade for lifetime PVC! Something I have been tossing around in my head is how to build a solar powered water desalinator on deck. Might be a good emergency backup plan. I also hope to build a solar water heating system made of PVC tubes painted black running up the mast. Thank you for all the information and ideas you have shared with us all. It might just make it possible for me to buy a fixer upper and sail away someday! Please let us know how the copper bottom jeans hold up as I want to do the same. Thanks again!

Thanks so much for commenting. To be honest though, the true reason behind our solutions is that we want to use supplies that we can find or repair anywhere in the world and in areas where we might not have access to "marine grade" products (just so happens that its cheaper- haha) Also awesome idea for the black PVC water heater system. We wish you the best of luck on your project :)

Hi guys, great video as usual! I noticed you were talking about installing a composting head and thought that I'd mention an issue from Damato's "Breaking Seas" book. He installed an AirHead composting unit and it worked fine until they were sailing and the boat was heeled over. There was an issue then with the urine mixing with the solids and causing the composting function to fail with rather nasty results. Just a heads up! (pun intended) Keep up the great work.
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 8 жыл бұрын
+Ed B Thanks for the "heads up". Lol. Yes, we are installing a composting head, but will have to build one ourselves (of course). Because the available ones to buy won't fit in our head. We haven't finished designing it yet, but we have definitely considered what would happen if we get knocked down and are taking that into account in our design.

Hi guys, greetings from the ATL area. I love your Vids and have a question that I am sure you two thought of but still, I want to ask. The PVC is relatively flexible but not like the hose. Boats flex constantly under the enormous pressures surrounding it. How will the PVC hold up to the flexing, or is it in such a location that it will not be part of this process?
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question :) As far as flexing, anywhere the pipe connects to the hull ditectly we did connect it to hoses to allow some additional movement. Hope that helps. But as for the rest, PVC is flexible enough to withstand the minor movement of the hull. Sorry we didn't put that info in the video (probably would've been a bit more helpful).

If you do have problems with the PVC getting brittle & cracking, you might think about PEX flexible plumbing pipe as a replacement. Also easy to work with. 1" and larger is sold in 10 and 20 ft sticks.
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 8 жыл бұрын

Bilge pumps, being centrifigal pumps, are quite sensitive in terms of flow rate when subjected to the pressure drop through all those pvc right angle bends. Might be worth checking the new flow rate to see if that is adequate for your needs. More is better when it comes to bilge pumps. Neat plumbing job though.

Hi guys I am leraning a lot from you! Just bought my first sailboat and there's lot to do ;) Unlikely I am not so equipped as you are! I've following you since the beginning and I have seen that you use an incredible variety of tools that here in Europe are worth more than the price of my boat. How did you manage to get all those tools to cut and shape different material without going broke?
@tazmun
@tazmun 8 жыл бұрын
Obviously marine grade stuff is $$$ and it seems prudent to consider what other trades might use. I did raise an eyebrow about the pvc though for this application...it does leave some things to be desired in high vibration or any environment exposed to ice, although since your not pressurizing it shouldn't be an issue. There are several options out there that are really reasonably priced though that use flexible tubing. Most sump pumps have a cheap flexible tubing, but there are fresh water solutions that are also flexible. We used to use the crap out of that stuff in the manufactured home industry at the factory and at the site hooking the home up. Some of it requires specialized tools but that can be rented cheaply. Bear in mind though our solution needed to be able to handle being pressurized and freezing...probably not concerns of yours. I'm so on pins and needles for how this forklift motor solution will turn out for you guys. I looked on your web site for more details but nothing there the last I looked. I did some reading on the subject and it seems to big boys with the big bucks are using solutions similar to electric car hybrids using the motor while under sail to actually charge the batteries too. I'm having a hard time picturing the props actually freewheeling though when connected via a geared transmission. I'm totally wondering how your going to handle speed control as there likely to be enough current transfer here that switches won't work...you'll have to use relays and some sort of electronic pulse speed control. Please indulge us and be detailed!
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 8 жыл бұрын
+tazmun Thanks, yes we will make sure to go through all details in our motor update video. We're going to soon write a more detailed answer in our website as well... in case we don't cover it all in the video. But its a long process, patience is key :)

We have mostly PEX now, but PVC is so much cheaper which is why we started with it. We still have some PVC left on the boat, it holds up just fine, and you can find replacement bits in every country at any hardware store.
@allynonderdonk7577
@allynonderdonk7577 8 жыл бұрын
Went back and looked at the video. Yes you have a removable fitting on the new pipe, but the pipe to pump connection is definitely solvent weld. If the pump is CPVC and the pipe is PVC it won't hold with PVC glue. The pump might just be really old and yellowing. CPVC is yellowish and you can find it at Home Depot or Lowes to compare the material to your pump. Also you might be able to find out the pump manufacturer and call them to find out. I don't think the manufacturer was expecting a solvent weld because of the lip on the outlet. It was obviously designed for a clamp on a flexible high burst pipe.
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 8 жыл бұрын
+Allyn Onderdonk Yes, it was designed for a hose clamp. But, we heated up the 1" I.D PVC and pressed in the 1 1/8" O.D Pump fitting. We didn't use any glue there. The two fit together so well it doesn't leak. The lip on the pump acts as a gasket against the PVC. It also will allow us to remove the pump easily and replace it without messing with the PVC any.

@SailingUma
@SailingUma 7 жыл бұрын
Yes PEX is great! But you then have to buy either very expensive fitting or expensive crip or expander tools. Neither of which we had at the time. Also, only really good for supply lines, not drain lines. So, still would not have worked in the bilge. If/when we renovate the galley and head, we will for sure be using PEX.

Howdy. Ex plumber here. As an FYI that pipe is not good for potable water. It also can become poisonous if heated. You need CPVC which has an yellow color for drinking water or the aforementioned rubber hoses. So I hope you only used that for the bilge/grey waste water.

Yea, the PVC is for the bilge drain and we don't drink the water from our tanks anyway. Our tanks and hoses are nasty and we don't have appropriate filters to drink it.

Just wondering, are the hose clamps marine grade? I saw another video where a boat owner warned against the hardware store variety because although the strap is stainless steel, the mechanism is not and rusted out and failed. Marine grade hose clamps cost more because they are stainless steel throughout.
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are "all stainless" most of them came off all the old hoses we ripped out of the boat and engine. So they've been in the boat for awhile and show no rust. There were however quite a few of the hardware store variety onboard that we tossed.

The reason flexible pipe is popular is because it accommodates the flex of the boat as it moves through the waves. Don't repeat this for your blackwater system. You might find you have to add flexible components to your bilge at a point. But, that'll be an easy fix, if it comes to it.
@SailingUma

We do have a flexible connection to the through hull. Also, don't have a black water system. We're building and composting head. PVC is also more flexible than the hull, so it should do fine.

Is there a check valve in there somewhere close to the pump?

+Robert Garbe be a pretty good idea...they make ones for pvc that would never really clog ...keep that bilge dry as bone!

@robertgarbe6348 8 жыл бұрын
+SolarBurrito Yes BUT with that LONG plumbing run the bilge will fill back up after the pump shuts off. Sorry but you are going to have to have a check valve, at the top of that detachable section and then just check it often, clog or no clog. At worst the pump will just cycle over and over again with the water from that large long pipe running back in.
@SolarBurrito
@SolarBurrito 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Garbe that run is not that long for a boat. Thier electric pump is not a positive displacement pump and doesn't have much power to overcome any sort of stoppage. A few years of oil dirt and hair in the bilge and it will very likely prevent the valve from opening. Not to mention many sailboats have sunk due to a siphoning check valve. Sinking is bad. A high loop on the hose would be much safer. Don't take my word for it, many books have been written about restoring boats. Check out This Old Boat. I just hope the few $$$ they saved doesn't bite them in the butt with their PVC bilge system.

+SolarBurrito You been smoking to many burrito's. there are a variety of flapper type valves (one example Jabsco In-Line Non Return Valve, 1 1/2 In. - 29295-1010) that are designed for this use. A thirty ft run of 1 and 1/2 in pipe has close to 7 GALLONS of water in it, just saying. I see NO problem with PVC in this use either, rather ingenious.

Pex would have been a good, economical choice as well.

Pex is cheap, but the fittings aren't. Back then we couldn't afford it. Although, we've now upgraded to pex for the potable system.

Why did you use gate valves instead of ball valves on your water ststem
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 4 жыл бұрын
Those gate valves are the tank isolation system that came with the boat and at the time, we couldn't afford to replace them.

Ok guys this is not gonna be fun for me to write but has to be said. PVC should never be used on a bilge pump. The PVC your using is for fresh water not for contaminates such as oil, grease and what ever else will go through that bilge pump. The PVC will degrade over time and as any sailor will tell you . It wont be at a good time when your in a marina when it leaks. 2nd when you have that many connections such as Elbows and splices it just gives water more places to leak from. Marine grade hoses are great because there is just 2 connection points your bilge and the hull of your vessel. Unless you have a back stop valve then you would have 4. I really don’t care about your fresh water system . I’m OK with it. But when it comes to safety your bilge pump should be one item on your list you don’t short cut. I like you kids I think its great and no one applauds your efforts more than me. I have watched you 2 since day one and I have enjoyed watching your dream become a reality. Don’t short cut on safety items. I would not write this if I didn’t care honestly on what your trying to do.

+TheSolarmechanic PVC is made with some of the most chemical resistant plastic you can buy, used in most ( if not all) of the drainage in houses including showers and toilets. (so it does deal with a lot of oils, shampoo, soap, hair, dirt etc...) It's also used in fish tanks - so it does deal with salt water pretty well. And its chemically bonded at the joints so its not a weak point but a stronger one _Think of it like a weld (if connected correctly - and I can assure you they are, they wont leak) Thanks for commenting and sharing your concerns. Really hope this answer helps understand a bit more :)

There are 11 types of PVC. I know this as I am a supplier. What you are using is not going to be adequate for this. The joints will make clog points as well. Marine grade products are used for a reason. I am seriously concerned for your safety with this set up you have made.

This is the only thing where I would've spent the money for the flexible tubing. PVC is not flexible enough for a boat and the stress it takes, it'll crack after only a few years.

A bilge pump should be readily reached because it gets fouled with debris too often.
