My son and I ran into the same problem on his 65 coupe. We redid the drivers side and we were pretty pleased with ourselves. Then went to do the passenger side and had your issue with aftermarket hinges. We ended up finding factory ones on eBay, rebuilt them and put them on.

Nice, I glad you were able to get stock units, that seems to be the best way to go. 🙂

The after market hinge was most likely made overseas and therefore has metric ID’s, pin diameters, and bushings etc. The rebuild kits were designed for OE hinges and have SAE dimensions.

Most likely. :)

I had to buy a specific bushings for a totally different project. Just took the dimensions and looked online. Just measured everything then ordered it.

I have no doubt that bushings can be purchased (because someone had them for this hinge when it was new), but that kind of defeats the purpose of buying a kit if someone still has to buy extra parts. :)

Trim O.D of new bushing on drill press or drill to use new parts. Or, just buy a while new hinge for $40 bucks. That’s a real strange hinge you got there. Aggravating.

I had this problem with another car, but worse. The ID of the bushing was more than the ID of the hinge. I needed negative thickness bushings apparently. Whoever sells such a thing should pay you to take them off their hands.

Rebuilt both of my 1966 OEM hinges with Scott Drake kit. Luckily no issues with bushing size. Biggest struggle was compressing the spring to get back into place.

Interesting video, and timely! Need to service the hinges on our '65 (door does not sag but makes a terrific groan upon opening and a horrid pop sound on close) and thought about rebuild kits, but just bought aftermarket hinges.

I would bet that hole diameters for the stock hinges are correct for those bushings. That being said, drilling the aftermarket hinge holes out to match OEM would be the logical way to go. Thanks for the heads up.
@AndyKruseChannel

Unfortunately doing that would be forcing the kit to work, which is not how these kits are intended to work.

Ran into the same issue! I tried a rebuild kit on an OEM hinge and had issues with that. Ended up buying a completely new hinge!

Enjoy watching your videos. I’m hoping you can help me some wheel fitment questions for my 64.5 260 V8 coupe. I want to upgrade to Torque Thrust D or ll. I’m struggling with 16x8 x 4. 15x7 x 4. Or 16x8 rear and 16x7 front. I’m also going to upgrade the front to Wilwood discs. My biggest concern is the offset do you know if the discs will change the offset compared to the drums. Lastly your thoughts on tire sizes. Thank you.
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 4 ай бұрын
I think the 15x7 with 3.75inch backspacing and 225/60/15 tires fit the front of the early mustangs the best. I feel that these cars look the best with more sidewall, as opposed to larger wheels and "short" sidewall tires. My previous Mustang (check out my older vids) had this setup and I'd like to go back to it on my current Mustang. For the rear, I'd stick with the same size, but you could fit 235's in there without much issue. The only caveat is you'll likely need to subtly roll the front fender lips. I talk about it in an older video with me previous Mustang. The Wilwood calipers are designed to tuck in behind the height of the axle hub (hard to explain) where the offset of whatever wheel you choose won't matter. A guy could even put 14 inch wheels on these cars and the Wilwood calipers would still clear. Check out the WIlwood Disc Brake install I did back towards the end of 2020, not only do I cover the install, I show how it all fits. :)

Could they be from a different year or body Ford of some type? The same/similar style lower hinge is used on a number of cars that shared falcon & mustang underpinnings. Might be just different enough to warrant purchasing good, known hinges you can document.

Not sure, but what is interesting is no one else is experiencing this (or at least talking about it). Everything I've seen is people rebuilding stock hinges, not aftermarket units.

I found the same problem with repop Ford hubcaps. The kind that have Ford in block script that came on 1956 Ford F-100's They will not fit OG Ford 1956 rims.

@@AndyKruseChannel I can't real answer that honestly. I worked in the automotive aftermarket for more years than I care to remember. I built exhaust headers for Clifford Research now Clifford Performance. Started at the the very worst job they had. And when I left I answered to two people Jack Clifford the owner and the plant foreman who other than when I worked for my Late Dad he was the second best boss I've ever had. Some times that seems like a lifetime ago , and then sometimes it's like it was yesterday. 6=8.

Are the bushings not supposed to be press fit?

Nope, because then they wouldn't be serviceable. :)

Ah, isn't the hobby grand? Sometimes you can't win for the sake of losing. It's all about a quality repair that is cost effective. My thoughts are this, drill the hole yourself for the 'rolly' pin to the desired depth. I believe the extra length provides a more rigid pivot point - mic the hole before selecting a drill bit - of course. Second, I would have a machine shop clearance the pivoting hole to allow for a proper interference fit of the longer bushing. In essence you are converting the aftermarket hinge to OEM specs - in some regard. This is not the only solution but I can't imagine the cost would be too high. I will bet your engine builder would do this for a nominal fee considering you spent umpteen thousands on that kick ass 347.
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, but after all that time and money, a new stock hinge would be cheaper. It seems that a bushing replacement kit should be just that and not a project for someone without the tools, experience, or connections to make it work. :)
