Wow, this video was made really well :D I'm kinda new to Steam Controllers and I'm still trying to get used to it (since owning it 2 years ago lmao) I was literally playing rocket league yesterday with my SC and thought that it'd be cool if they had some kind of official layout or something but this is even better!

Thanks for the kind words. Since starting this channel I've learned just as much about video editing as I have about the Steam Controller and Steam Input software. So it's always warming to hear positive words about the video itself. If you need any help with the Steam Controller then feel free to ask. I've been using mine for 3 years now, in every game, and have spent a lot of time with the software. I'm glad to hear that you are dusting it off and giving it another shot though. This controller is revolutionary and I can't imagine going back to mouse+keyboard or a traditional controller. It's an amazing device once you adjust to it.

I think it should be worth noting that you get to the advanced view by pressing either "select" or "start" depending on which input config you are looking at. You can put in keyboard bindings there as well as activators. Release presses and such.

What about deadzone shape cross is the best way? And last question, the deadzone calibration is it better to turn lower on by default? Thanks for answering

The first thing I noticed when tinkering was that they tried to disable the ability to use my dual-stage triggers. I’m so used to using right trigger for gas and boost on a full pull. I got around it with some tinkering, but it was just odd to see that.
@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
This is one of SIAPI's compromises but it should be better over time as we -- both the devs and the users -- get used to it. They didn't actually try to disable it -- that's impossible -- but they did hide it from the default set of choices. One of Steam Input's Legacy issues is choice overload. There are too many options and a lot of people end up just using someone else's config or they switch to another controller. SIAPI improved this by creating Basic and Advanced options and allowed the devs to determine what should be found in each. The Basic settings should only contain what a majority of users will want to use an Input Source for. So while it might seem a bit odd to see options hidden, this is entirely intentional and should result in more users making their own configs rather than relying on others. And as more games adopt SIAPI we should see this practice more often which will make it less surprising when we do see it.

Ever since this update ive had horrible input lag. It goes away if i turn "Use Steam Input" to off, but the problem is i can no longer change my bindings if I do that.
@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
If you turn Steam Input (Beta) to Off then you'll need to press your Guide button to open the overlay and access the configurator through the traditional method. While in the configurator you'll need to make a Legacy Config though; only mouse, keyboard, or Xbox bindings. After that it should work.
@dwabado5 жыл бұрын
@@criticalinput I've tried this and steam gives me a message of some sort basically saying I can't access the controls unless I turn on in game controller support. I'm extremely picky about input lag and this has essentially caused me to quit playing my favorite game.

One question, now Idk if you mentioned it or not, or maybe I did not understand what you said. Is there a way where I can change my keybinds from rocket league not big picture mode? I hate it so much lmao
@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
If you are using SIAPI then no. The whole point of the API is divorcing key bindings from the game and to have Steam Input handle them. If you are using a legacy config (aka you're binding keyboard or Xbox buttons to your controller) then yes.
@FASTFabrication5 жыл бұрын
how can i eliminate the steam api... i need rl stds keybind that lets u bind any gamepad button or mouse buttton to an action.... the steam one, doesnt allow you to keybind anything to any button you cant even make air roll and powerslide a keybind together if u chaange it from default. im 1 handecand i modified the hori ps4 mini controller, so i need to use there 4 ps buttons (share/optoins/touch/pshome) because placement on pcb next to face buttons to assign command like air roll jump, etc

In Steam set your config to Xinput or m+k and then when you load Rocket League make sure to disable Steam Input in Options -> Controls. (At the bottom set "Steam Input (beta)" to Off)

@criticalinput4 жыл бұрын
This video was about an API, not an application, so I'm not sure if you are wanting to know about the benefits of Steam Input (SI) vs native controller support or the benefits of the Steam Input API (SIAPI) vs XInput API. While there are a lot of nuances between the two arguments the ultimate reason why someone would want to use SI or SIAPI is customization.
@gcbe4 жыл бұрын
i dont like this is there any way to turn it off? it doesnt let me set specific air rolls.
@criticalinput4 жыл бұрын
Dude, I get notifications for all of my comments -- there isn't any need to spam multiple videos with this same question. As for an answer, I don't have one. It appears that Psyonix forces SIAPI for Steam Controller users. For other controllers you could disable Steam Input on a per-game basis inside of Rocket League's Properties in Steam. But I stopped using Steam Input and the Steam Controller precisely because of things like this so I'm actually a little bit out of the loop as far as game specific workarounds.

I would not give this game the gold standard until it adds vibration and correct gamepad icons as of right now the gold standard seems to be red faction guerilla remastered with correct icons and vibrations as well as a plethora of options but hopefully once this gets out of beta they will add icons and vibration it seems like only a matter of time though after that I'll be playing way more cause right now I use the PS4 controller just with the wire and no steam input and it has the icons but no vibration probably cause it uses the direct input and it's not hacking in to the controller like most Ubisoft games do Xbox controllers don't have that issue since they use they're own xinput.dll files which is responsible for vibration
@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
Yup, I said I couldn't give it the gold standard label yet but that it was certainly on it's way. Assuming Psyonix keeps working on it I don't see how it wouldn't reach that level by the time it exits beta. However, you do bring up a great point with the vibration. I didn't mention it at all and that's because I don't think about it. I don't even use it. But it certainly is a factor that I should keep in mind as I continue to talk about SIAPI supported titles. Thanks for reminding me about this feature and I'll be sure to include it in the future.

@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
Honestly I'd recommend a legacy config at this point. I was having issues consistently pulling off half flips with SIAPI and they recently added new features to the Replay Viewer and I don't know that they updated the SIAPI config to reflect these new bindings. To get your Switch Pro Controller working you need to enable Switch Pro Controller Support in Steam's Controller Settings and then load a gamepad template into Steam Input for Rocket League.
@palmmoso5 жыл бұрын
Critical Input i actually had switch pro input enabled and it never worked and the configs weren’t the problem. I pretty much just went in controller settings and just tried everything i could and it started working but i have no idea why.
@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
Very strange. I know RL had a rather large update yesterday so when I get to my computer today I'll see if my controller works and if I can still see the Steam Input (beta) option or not.
@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
You're right, it looks like the Steam Input (beta) option was silently removed -- probably because the automatic detection works well enough that they don't need it anymore. I tried switching between Legacy and SIAPI configs and Rocket League knew exactly what was up each time. I'm not sure why you had trouble getting your controller detected but I'm glad you got it working.

@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
Are you using the official DS3 drivers or are you using a third party wrapper like scptoolkit? If you aren't using the official drivers then your controller will show up as an Xbox 360 controller to Steam. As for why the name of the controller changed, I have no idea. You can change that name in the personalization area of the Controller Settings though.

@@d7eemo270 Depending on which program you are using (DS3Tool, Better DS3, MotionInJoy, ScpToolkit etc) determines how you will need to go about removing it. Some of these are more difficult to completely get rid of so do some googling for how to uninstall the one that you use. You'll probably want to reboot after you uninstall the software. Then you need to download Playstation NOW. It should recognize your DS3 and request permission to install a driver. Let it do this. Another reboot is probably good here. Then go to the Controller Settings in Steam and enable Playstation Controller Support. And that's about it. However, I should warn you that Steam Input doesn't supports the IMU chip (the SixAxis) in the Dualshock 3. I know it does for the Dualshock 4 but if doesn't for the DS3. It also doesn't recognize the analog face button. So technically you aren't missing out on anything by using your current setup. If you want to use the gyrometer then I highly suggest upgrading to a Dualshock 4, if you can. Between the gyro and the touchbar it is easily my favorite non-Steam Controller gamepad.

It really annoys me that the mouse is on the screen all the time now. It worked perfectly before but now it feels very clunky. Not really a fan of this change but i guess its great if you wanna play with a switch controller on a pc. (Idk why you would but i guess it was important to rocket league devs.)
@criticalinput5 жыл бұрын
Pertaining to the cursor always being present, that is a holdover from the game not entirely understanding SIAPI, hence why the glyphs are also mouse/keyboard. Even though it is accepting controller input it isn't switching to the controller UI. Both of these issues should be resolved simultaneously between now and when it leaves beta. And the beta status is also why it feels clunky. As long as they follow through with this, that clunkiness will be removed with further patches. As for your comment about the Switch Controller, it doesn't require SIAPI. In fact, no controller requires it. Steam Input is more than capable of getting any controller working with practically any game. The Steam Input API specifically relates to how the gamepad get read by the game and how the game sends info to the gamepad. Also, the Switch Controller is a proficient controller and has a nice feel to it. It's only major flaw is that Nintendo put digital triggers in it. An issue that doesn't really matter too much in RL. However, to help you have the best experience I will offer some troubleshooting. For the time being, disable the beta Steam Input support in Rocket League and use an XInput config just like before. SIAPI isn't being forced on anyone and, as far as I see it, will continue to be an option alongside native Xbox and DS4 support.

I tried using DS4 with my ps4 controller but it doesnt work. It still forced me to put on the option ingame before my controller would work. I used to put my controller on and it works just fine but with this update it forces me to put on the setting no matter what i use. I tried turning it off and getting the controller to work but nothing, then installed DS4 without having the setting on and still didnt work. Deleted the drivers and bluethoot setting and redid all of it and it still didnt work. I was busy for 2 hours trying various things to get it to work but nothing worked except turning on the setting. I dont mind them putting it in the game, but putting a very early beta version of it into the game that cant even tell the difference between controller inputs of arrow inputs from a keyboard seems a little strange to me. It took me about an hour to already figure out my previous controlls i had. Cuz it reset everything when i turned the steam input on :/

My best advice currently is to file a bug report over on Rocket League's Steam Discussion page. I haven't heard anything about them working on a fix for it but the more people who let them know about the issue, the faster it should get updated.

If you Right Click Rocket League in your Steam Library and select Properties you should see a new window with a few tabs. The default tab has some options at the bottom: Steam Input Per-Game Settings and Use BPM Overlay When Steam Input is Active. I believe you can disable the controller mapper if you change the "Steam Input Per-Game Setting" to "Forced Off"
