There's exactly zero chests in Fire Emblem Awakening that you have to deploy Gaius for because the first one is in his joining chapter and by the second one Anna is available, and that's just kinda Gaius' thief utility in a nutshell

Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this about FE1 Julian and Rickard, but I think it’s hilarious how min-maxed they are to never be combat viable. Both have a 0% growth in weapon level and a base of 2, meaning that if you give either of them the only manual in the game, they will have 7 weapon level, which is 1 short of using the levin sword and 2 short of silver sword. Their bases, growths, and the in game stat boosters form a symphony of futility that makes me eternally grateful. Unless I’m forgetting someone, I think that makes them the only two characters in the series (sans GBA and Tellius dancers) that have literally no prospect of being combat viable. I wish more support characters in the series were designed this wonderfully

There should have been a thief triangle attack in binding blade. Dont discuss its viability, there should have been one And reclassed gaius to myrmidon will give you a fast unit with extra move and gigantic avoid. I do this every playthrough and I cant reccomend it enough

In one of my Radiant Dawn runs, I picked volke for the tower just to see how well he would do. He ended up being an amazing dragon killer with gamble, with 97 crit and 79 hit. The unique dagger you get has surprisingly good might, and this let him one round red dragons

I honestly believe that sacrificing Shura for a pair of Boots that you absolutely do not need for a 1-turn CQ Endgame clear is far more of an inconvenience than just having Shura in your army even as a free source of a Killer Bow and a Mend staff actually offers. Shura himself being able to one-round the Master Ninjas Ninjas in Chapter 17 is IMO far more valuable than the Boots considering your Niles or your Bow Mozu might not be strong enough to handle the MN even when trained. As for CQ Endgame, what you really need to 1-turn clear that map is: 1. Four staff users -- two with 8 Move and one must have B staves to use the Entrap staff, one with 7 Move and 2 charges of Rescue, and one more with 9 Move plus at least one charge of the other Rescue staff. You get a bunch of units that can Heart Seal or promote into classes that can easily meet this threshold with no trouble at all. Felicia, Elise, Shigure, Dwyer, Forrest, Niles, Nina, Selena, and Shura himself can all do one or more of these. The 9 Move threshold can be achieved through pair-up, so that's yet another less need for the Boots. 2. The ability to Shelter/Sing with Azura for these staff users. Peri, Gunter, and Xander can do this at base, and Silas and any kids with a Cav parent are very likely to have this skill as well. You'll also need three other units to transfer Azura around for this trick, and literally anyone can do this. 3. Two Rallybots, which can be done by Rallyman and Izana with no investment into either. Laslow can also be one of these if trained for that purpose. 4. Corrin, because they're forced deploys, and they have a very realistic shot of killing the final boss with a hefty amount of investment, which is the route most people take. They're not actually necessary for the clear, though. 5. The actual boss-killer with a +Move Pair-up. There's a few units who can pretty realistically reach this threshold, though the most consistent are Berserkers with a Brave Axe or Sorcerers with the Lightning tome, both having a shitload of tonics and damage-stacking skills necessary to one-round the final boss. I prefer Vantage/Life & Death Sorcerer Elise!Ophelia with either a Malig or Dark Knight pair-up, which could be either of her parents or whomever her husband ends up being, though Camilla can also do this if she gets an A+ Support with Beruka or married Arthur/Keaton. So in all you don't need Pass or the extra pair of Boots from killing Shura for a reliable 1-turn clear of CQ Endgame, and in fact Shura could even contribute to said clear depending on how your playthrough goes. As far as I've been able to tell from browsing the CQ community for the last couple of years, most of the problems people tend to have with CQ Endgame stem from a lot of misconceptions that stack up over the course of an entire run, and I think stuff like sacrificing Shura ends up directly contributing to maps like Chapter 17 and Endgame being so infamous.

This tier list is like watching someone clean someone else's room without understanding where anything goes. All over the place.

I had no idea chest keys disappeared after the chapter is over in Fates until you mentioned it. I just literally never had a need for them because, as you say, it's so easy to have a good combat unit with locktouch on your team. So even though I intended to hoard them "just in case," they never came to my mind after I got them.

I think you’re undervaluing Heather for one key reason: Disarm. It’s not the most reliable thing ever, but throughout the majority of part three you can steal basically whatever weapons you want from enemies, allowing you to get earlier Storm Swords for Ike pre Ragnell among other things. It’s actually easy enough to not kill an enemy with a disarm unit thanks to the flourish skill. I have no idea if Flourish even works as the developers intended with how useless it is for combat, but it’s basically the only way to take POR shots at an enemy whose weapon you want to steal until it’s finally yours, and will even stop mastery skills from killing. Give Flourish to a unit with high skill and doubles often, like Shinon or Mia, and you’ll trigger disarm more often than you might think. Maybe stealing equipment isn’t super necessary always, but it is a way to save money and get equipment you’re not supposed to have yet. And because of disarm, Heather has more opportunities to steal stuff than basically any other thief on this list, including Sothe, as Disarm is locked to the Greil Mercenaries, so Sothe can’t steal weapons from a disarmed enemy until Part 4. I still wouldn’t say Heather’s one of the best thieves out there, but she also serves a valid purpose that you didn’t address. I’d probably put her in upper B tier.

The +1 mov isn't just for Thieves like Gaius, Tricksters like Anna also give a +1 mov. Other classes that give that are Griffon Riders, Bow Knights, Great Knights, and Dark Knights. The reason that Assassins don't give +1 move is because that class is shared with Myrmidons.

Sothe is honestly one of the coolest "Jagens" ever designed in Fire Emblem. Imagine having an incredibly powerful character you can use as a crutch and is still useful even if you don't like using Jagens for combat. He has 1-2 range. He can switch between killing things with Kard, and setting up kills with his Bronze Knife. He gets a super effective weapon against the Laguz that are one of the biggest threats to the other Radiant Dawn members. He can open doors, chests, and steal items. Stealing items is particularly neat because the exp gain is fixed at 10%, so his high level doesn't matter, allowing Sothe to circumvent the jagen exp tax. All things considered, Sothe is my favorite Thief and Jagen.

Rd sothe still takes movement penalties in desert. His move cost 2 instead of 3 like other foot units

I think Patty or Daisy's best use in Gen 2 is collecting money for the Valkyre user. But that requires you to pair up Claude in the first place and have units die.

ok Mekkah, please hear me out. Legault is definitly better than matthew but in combat stat, so what matter is utility as a thief and aviability right? so then why Jaffar and Sothe are on the top? Also why marisa and joshua not in the tier list, since they can promote to assassin and use lockpicks?

If Ashe counts as a thief I would say Yuri does. He may not have locktouch as his personal skill but his "canon" class is trickster which I would say counts.

I think Yuri and Petra could’ve been on this list with Ashe! There’s not really a Thief in Golden Deer, but those 2 fit the category well. But i get you mean “Thief” has to do with items and treasure, and those 2 really don’t have an edge on Ashe in that respect But just in terms of the Thief archetype, Petra’s canon class is the Thief line (in Three Hopes as well), and she has instruction dialogue about how people say she’s quick like a their, but she “would never be stealing” And of course Yuri as a Trickster, I feel like he fits the “treasure” theme a bit more since he gets you access to the Fetters of Dromi But again, FE3H doesn’t really have a traditional thief, so I get not adding them to the list!

I distinctly remember having all of my locktouch units killed and not getting any gold in lategame conquest. I had to reclass one of the child units into a master ninja just so I could actually get gold. You really really need your locktouch units in fates, it's literally your only source of gold and there are almost no chest keys

The Tharja + Gaius pair up is one of the best in the game.

Argument for rennac being well, a bit higher. The dragonshield in ch 17, and i believe there's a stealable guiding ring somewhere that isn't dropped. Also deployment slots aren't really threatened due to seth, saleh, gerik, and whichever flyer you chose being all the combat you really need at all.

Another note about Shura: Move+1 Pair ups are NOT lucrative. Ninja, Master Ninja, Outlaw, Adventurers, and, MOST importantly, ALL promoted mounted units provide move +1 on pair up.

I would put Sothe and Volke on the same level personally, Volke only really has one chapter of actual utility before Sothe (chapter 10,) and what he has to steal in that chapter isn't all too impressive, asides from the short axe. Everything else is either just unnecessary money, or just something not worth using. They both get A LOT of chapters though together that they lock pick for a lot of useful items that help immensely, chapter 13 has both a energy drop and a speed wing, which your recently acquired flier, Jill could make good use of because it heightens her doubling range, and makes her able to use the steel lance without penalty, which you know, is really nice when FE9 is very reliant on you using your fliers well if you want to not have a tedious experience. I really wouldn't say the combat difference between them doesn't matter anyways too just simply because their weapon class is so horrible, they're really solid utility units though and whenever there's chest I use both of them, it manages to help a lot with speed of chapters, especially when you're rescue dropping them. Volke's only main advantage with his better combat is that he has a higher chance of surviving siege tomes which can be relevant in a single chapter for thieving.

I am only going to do Berwick Saga thieves since well...Tearring Saga has a bunch of thieves and honestly...I barely use most of them besides stealing so...yea I don't have a lot experience on that hand. But for Berwick Saga this is going to be easy. Czene: A or B Tier: This really depends on what dagger you give the Czene as in Berwick Saga, daggers ignores defense but are very weak alongside how both thieves have piss poor strength. They do have a lot of speed and can steal, however, stealing is unlike any normal Fire Emblem. Even so, she does gain a unique promotion unlike the other thief where she gains a horse. Yes, you heard that right...a mounted Thief. Overall, she is fun to use as some of the daggers are really good with the notable one being the Assassin (God help you when you face off against...these daggers.) As they have a really high crit chance and well...dagger overall, can deal extra damage when they critical so if done right. She can one-hit kill some enemies or boss but that depends. Thaddy: A or B Tier: This again depends on the dagger. But unlike Czene, he doesn't promote, however, he can become one of the best dodge tank thanks to his skill. But, it has a couple of restrictions and if he gets hit well...it is basically nearly dead or just dead. As both thieves can easily be killed by one to two shots. He does have a better stealing effect than Czene but overall, this depends on you as both thieves have very different playstyles.

Sacred Stones is a weird game because on one hand if Colm dies, you can still buy keys from the world map, or promote Joshua/Marisa to Assassin (as much as i don'y want to) and give em lockpicks but if he dies in like ch.6 or something, getting screwed out of Stealable Items for almost half the game til Rennac joins is a major pain in the ass i'm still a resetter, i'll consider Ironmanning when i'm good at FE, but that alone makes me not wanna ironman FE8, i don't wanna lose Colm

No Tina? Kaga has made a bunch of wack-ass balance decisions like everything to do with Sigurd, the Again staff in FE3, giving you a Jagen/FE11 Wolf hybrid with a rechargeable Brave Weapon in chapter 3, but nothing can compare to stuffing Tina full of Pure Waters.

You should do a Kliff tier list (early game trainees or villagers with good growths)

I know u were just doing conquest for Niles and Shura but I just want to point out that in rev Shura is a god and Niles sucks because he is so underleveled. Revs “amazing” balancing really changed up where these units are tiered from conquest.

I’m surprised Nina isn’t on this list? Also Shura at B tier is something I can live with, but he’ll always be S tier for stealing my heart.

Volke is the closest thing to a combat thief in FE 9 due to promoting

I really wouldn't put Julian and Rickard that high at all in FE12, in the end you pretty much only deploy them for ch6 and ch10. ch14 is pretty chill at the point when the chests become available and they're next to Marth's itinerary so you can just grab them with him ch16 is the bigger one I guess, you could deploy them here but if you plan to loot everything and not rush the throne room you can pretty much do it with Marth too, and if you rush the throne room you probably use thief to get the rescue staff and maybe the bullion and speedwings, you don't have the time to get a thief there ch20 you should use the thief staff on the out of the way chests and when you go through the chests room Marth can grab one or two of them, if you didn't use the thief staff in 16 you can deplete it there to get everything And you just don't care about the chests in 20x/22/23 (the 23 ones you can't even get on H3/4)

They will attack xander just not with siegfried or javelin equiped as they dont want to get counterattacked

Why no Yuri?

If Chad doesn't get credit for the halberd and potentially other treasure because turn count, then Wolf and Sedgar shouldn't get credit for potentially stomping the majority of the game, because in an efficient run they don't even level. With that in mind, I definitely think Chad is the better unit of the three thieves. Marcus with D axes and the halberd in chapter 4 alone compared to no halberd is a bigger contribution than Astore's combat utility. Not to mention the fact that Chad is required for all treasure prior to chapter 7, (and even in chapter 7, you want to deploy him for the red gem) whereas Astore is always competing with Chad, door/chest keys, and later on Cath. I don't see how Volke and Sothe can have such a big gap. Volke has only one chapter of theif utility before Sothe. The only thing I can think of is Volke potentially being able to steal certain laguz stones off untransformed laguz in maniac, but I don't believe this was taken into account.

Sothe is in S tier? What the- He does his job fine as a pre promote, but he falls off so hard. It takes forever for him to promote again and he's a story character so you *have* to bring him along constantly. Then, after he does promote, his ability will stop him from killing units if it activates, which will get him killed. He's the most obnoxious unit in this whole list. The rest all know their place as utility back-line units at least. Also: Where Jaffer?

if you make Olivia Morgans mum then Morgan can be a dancer with lock touch and that kinda makes her the best thief because she is always deployable, as well as being Morgan so insane combat stats.

Everytime i play fe6, I use Chad to steal Cath's lock pick then kill her. Well she steal a silver lance in my first playthrough so i really hate her and everytime i play, i kill her.
