@@Name-ql7jf True, Pig might be decently fun to play against, and Doctor as, though I'd still prefer Dredge's teleports to Doctor's zapping. Didn't include Trapper, for instance, since even if he's not super fun to play against, his traps can be quite satisfying when they work. Someone like Freddy just feels super uninspired on both sides.

I still remember starting out and having 30 hours of gameplay before I could make any kind of build. As a new player, I wasn't very good so I was starved for medkits and the like. As time goes on, the issue goes away, but it was a slog to start. Even if it damages the BP economy, I think its worth the damage to allow new players to join.

Regarding the FOMO marketing concerns people have about cosmetics, just to try to help people understand where others are coming from. The perceived issue doesn't exist in a future where someone might potentially regret not buying something when they could have, it is artificial limited-time availability introducing psychological pressure to make purchases when some people otherwise would not. You can view people who are affected by these tactics as stupid, or irresponsible with money, or victims of manipulation, but the bottom line is it is very effective at getting that subset of FOMO-vulnerable people to buy disproportionately more than they otherwise would, and it feels to many people to be some shade of manipulative, predatory, or dishonest. That, I think, is why so many people have been raising ethical concerns with the practice. As an addendum, one of the reasons this issue is being raised with younger audiences is because the practice is becoming more prevalent in recent years. There's plenty of other reasons, but it's definitely on the rise and more noticeable everywhere today as compared to 5 years ago.

Its terrible, I know it's a problem, but problematically yeah they force me to even play games I don't really like because of fomo because if I'm not playing this I might regret not buying something I would have liked and that does stick with me for weeks and months later. 15:00 as someone who is very fomo subsceptible i would like to give my two cents on the situation Fomo does not come from a wish of wanting or not wanting for me, it boils down more to a collectors desire from many people i have talked to that also suffer from it is that the thought of never being able to have a "Completed collection" of something is infuriating. Peoples fomo is rarely triggered if they came late to a game if you started playing dbd in 2022 and you already missed a stuff of fomo things the idea of a completed collection is so far out there it does not matter but the amount of times where i am fucking pissed that I didnt get Legecy 1 Claudet or Bloodletting Dweight simply because i didnt knew about them back than is triggering my on a personal level. I get the argument "if you dont like it dont get it" but the issue arises not from you not wanting a cosmetic and buying it the issue arraises from you missing out on options in the future. Alternatively some people are just really insecure about their general self-worth especially in todays society and feel the need to cope with online flexes, people DO give a shit when seeing a Legecy skin or a rare discontinued cosmetic. Just look at Legacy Prestige or before they where made avaiable for everyone the convention skins. Lastly i think a huge amount of unavaiable/unobtainable skins is very bad for new player retention. Say, again, you started playing dbd in 2022 and you think to your self:"wow what a cool shirt i wonder how i can get it its not in the shop... maybe its linked to an Achievement? maybe i should look it up and....... merch promo in 2018? wtf..." Edit: your agument as "just dont buy it" is btw just a less extrem version of telling a gambling addict to just "stop doing gambling works on paper lol but not as easily said than done 2 Edit: the Funko Pop analogy is REALLY GOOD

Regarding the FOMO and limited skins, I highly recommend to read the report by the Norwegian Consumer Council called Insert Coin. It's more targeted towards lootboxes, but the psychology that lootboxes target applies to stuff like limited skins, limited battle passes and rotating storefronts too. To a lot of players it is important how their characters look, and it's a valid form of enjoying a game too. However many people whose primary focus of importance is the gameplay tend to ignore those players as long as the gameplay isn't affected by the monetary strategy. This unfortunately leads to predatory monetisation schemes that gets legitimised by players who aren't affected by it and just say "just don't buy it", not understanding or showing empathy for them. It's especially targeted towards kids, people with lower impulse controls, people with autism or adhd or other neurodivergencies, and sadly if it was as easy to "just don't buy them" then these strategies wouldn't be effective or even used. So even if you're lucky - as many others are - to not be affected by these strategies, please show empathy towards those who are affected, and lets support one another for a better video game industry where no one should be exploited, preyed upon or feel like they can't play a game due to its monetisation. James Stephanie Sterling also has some good videos on insight on this! Aside from that, I'm enjoying this type of content, even if I can't play dbd since they block linux players (':

You don’t get too much bp if you’re new to the game and have to prestige 3 all the characters. It still takes time. Maybe ultra rare items should only appear in the fourth blood web tho?

Lowkey, not to speak any heresy, but I like Skull Merchant too. She's a fully human killer, her weapons have various animations depending on cosmetic which no other killer does, her menacing walk and attacks are clean. Even though her power feels very 3 genny, we've not had a killer with such a level of dive-in-dive-out of stealth before as a well set up network of drones, and truly being able to know parts of the map are secure, even if just a tile or a building is really cool. I also think the skill ceiling of her hasn't been explored yet, and I've made it my mission to try and find it. Some stuff like using your "Reactivate Drone" on cooldown (denoted by the green light on your tracker) and making use of the tracking and the stealth to sneak up on survivors in a very I'm All Ears kind of way. You may hang me for my heresy, but I speak the truth.

A lot of salt and fomo for cosmetics could also likely stem from how ridiculously priced DBD is already. If it weren't already such a slog to unlock everyone without paying I don't think people would mind timed cosmetics *as* much since it is unfortunately standard practice for many titles.

About the fomo part: 1) many people arent sure if they wanna spent money on a certain outfit. They are undecided or would like to wait to see if they like future outfits better. That state can easily result in peolpe not buying at all. With the time pressure they incentieves peolpe to make a decision. This also eliminates the option of waiting for any possible better looking outfit. (If they arent better you cant go back to the other one but if you do like one better you already spent your auric cells and now you either cant buy the new outfit that you really like or you have to spent more money) 2)It also targets impulsive people on top of that. 3) it kinda tricks peolpe into thinking those are more special because they are limited. This aspect alone can trick people into buying it. So it actually targets more people than you might think. But it is a bit hard to explain it in detail and cover all aspects though.

A game from a company I love came out recently, and I got it day one. Had it set to download the second it came out. Hopped on it so fast, that me and everyone else crashed the servers. A few weeks in they had a welcome event with just a bunch of consumables. Nothing special or fancy or "Gotta play to have it!" All except for one thing. A player banner at the highest tier that was about being a dedicated fan. It wasn't even hard to get, but I didn't know about the event until the day it ended. So I never got the item. Fortunately, this company is super nice and didn't let me spend $20 to just buy all the event tiers. So I didn't get it in the end, and I was kicking myself because despite how much I loved the game, the game series, and the developers, I hadn't gotten the Dedicated Fan banner. Now companies that put price tags on things like that, those are awful. Imagine the exact same scensrio, except for a character with little or no skins in Dbd. I log on the last day of the sale and find out that if I want this super cool skin for a character I really like that has none I have to spend $20 to get it... That's using FOMO for predatory reasons. Unless there is a specific reason the skins can only be bought at that time (like a limited time event celebrating a collab event or major milestone,) there is no reason to have the skins be limited time and never return again.

It has taken me all year to p3 every survivor since the bp update and I still have Steve left. I also have to p3 8 more killers so I don’t think we have an excess of bp. I think if you’ve been playing forever and stream this game daily you may think we have an excess of bp but we definitely don’t lol. However there are a few bugs that I find annoying, that getting prestige 3 on the stranger things survivors dlc characters does nothing now since you can’t p3 their perks. Additionally they have other bugs when it comes to prestiging them in that they don’t get fast blood webs until they’re p3 which makes leveling them up so annoying.

In terms of fomo, I think some people don't know if they'll come to really like a cosmetic in the long run. Maybe your first impression is a bit negative but it has some subtle charm or goofiness that you come to love over time. Another possibility people might worry about is that maybe some individual piece of a set could look really good when combined with other stuff that comes out later and you'd never be able to do the look if you didn't have it. I don't typically worry too much about fomo, but I understand it a bit. It does tend to push impulse buys and hoarding.

For me, DbD went from a fun game to play with my friends. To a dress up game with personality. Each character has a headcannon with each player, and I like to dress mine up to reflect that. I like Suits and fancy dress clothes, so when I saw Ace had a Hugh Hefner jacket and some pink shades, even as a young broke highschool student I knew I had to buy the pieces of those outfits. As I play DbD more, I find new combinations of clothes and even some cosmetics that I know when hobbled together can reflect other media with cool refrences. Feng's pig tails for instance, remind me of Ling Xiaoyu from Tekken, and knowing feng had the long red dress with her LNY cosmetic, I wanted to recreate the Tekken 5 outfit Ling had. Come to remember, oh yeah, those are gone until next year. Sure, I can wait until next year to get it. But by then, something else might catch my attention and then those auric cells I had saved up are gone. I don't spend huge amounts of money on DBD cosmetics, and I try to grind for the Iri shards. But sometimes you cant grind fast enough. And the drip feed of cosmetics only raises the bar of what you have to earn to get a complete collection. FOMO is a silent killer, cause sometimes you don't know what you're missing until its already gone.

Theoretically, everyone is neurodivergent. Practically, it's not a "small" difference that's usually considered, it's a medium one. Personally, I draw the line at whether one has a diagnosis (regardless of how minor), or clearly needs one. You would be neurodivergent based on OCD. The most typical use of the term is to describe ADD/ADHD/Autism, as they're very common. Its purpose is basically to highlight the fact that people with these disorders may experience it impossible to function "normally" in some area not because they choose to, but because they actually cannot. Motivation problems, for example. Or why you can't just tell a depressed person to pull themselves up by the bootstraps.

About FOMO: remember it can involve time investment, not just money investment. The “buy a skin or pay rent” idea is extreme but consider something like “play the last 3 days of this battle pass and get the cosmetics you like or avoid procrastinating on work”. Sometimes it’s not necessarily the cosmetic, but the knowledge that you’ll literally never be capable of getting it again unless you DO THIS THING BEFORE THIS TIME. That little voice that tells you you need to get it before it’s gone forever is really strong in some people and is an effective marketing tactic to make people spend more time or money on a game. Maybe it’s harder to understand if you don’t experience it but it can be pretty damn intense even if logically you know it shouldn’t matter cause it’s a silly cosmetic in a silly game. I hope you read this, cause it’s an interesting conversation topic. Have a good day man, I enjoy these conversation type videos a lot.

regarding the too much BP thing you mentioned before. yea you have too much because your a veteran player with most characters already prestiged once or twice. for new players its still a little pitiful to get a character to 50 to get a single perk for another killer just to find that the perk did not appear in your first 50 levels so your forced to prestige and try again its actually pretty miserable when i want to try a fun new build but i gotta prestige 3 more characters. then pray their perks appear in my blood web

also I really want to know why bhvr dropped the ball so hard on Haddie. Any time I bring it up I hear “she’s ugly and has bad perks” like ok but WHY? Bhvr clearly never cared about her from the start and it was painfully obvious. Bad perks, blue hair, almost no cosmetic options, and a different lore from the tomes that had made her into such a bad ass (“sHe’S fRoM a DiFfErEnT uNiVeRsE”). Did they outsource her to some other development team somewhere or something lol like how is it even possible that they created such a flop from a survivor who could quite literally be the main character of the story based on lore?

I don't agree that Skull Merchant is bad without the gen kick meta. For starters that meta didn't make any killer good. It just made matches miserable. Second, Skull Merchant has perhaps the best built in information of any killer - which is not a weak thing at all. Especially since she gets it where she wants/needs to get it. She has good addons all around. If not being able to indefinitely hold a 3 gen for an hour makes a killer bad then we should endeavor to only play bad killers.

12:10 On the topic of Limit Time Cosmetic. I usually don't care for this stuff either in most games but I do find it rather inconvenient in DBD specifically if you're like me. I ONLY buy skins with shards. (with the exception for outfits of licensed characters.) Sometimes I'm even inpatient and buy each part of an outfit as soon as I have enough shards but I never dip into spending auric cells. This is just not an option with limited time cosmetics. With this system I need to make sure to grind enough shards months in advance just to buy 1 outfit. That's especially a problem if you saved up for something in Halloween because you won't have enough for something in Christmas aswell since they're so close together. Another side issue is alot of these cosmetics aren't even really seasonal themed but they're being treated as such. A huge example is the survivors cozy pajamas. Want a cool hoodie for Mikaela or cool headphones for Jonah? Well tough luck because they're considered Christmas skins! Come back next year! It's just annoying and inconvenient. Also because I find it funny I wanna point out twins already doesn't have many cosmetics, but one of them is also considered a time limited skin. They somehow managed to screw over twins with this lol. By the end of the day it's just pixels on a screen but people do like to collect skins, having their hands forced is never a good thing and should rightfully be called out by the community.

Watching but I have to agree with Scott on this: Some young people self-diagnose themselves with disorders because they feel that they are similar. I see it all the time with ADHD and people just going “Yeah, I have it and my attention is bad sometimes” and they completely disregard actual issues. I was diagnosed and I pretty much have to force myself to be in a quiet room before I can read. It’s also caused a lot of psychological issues with the fact that I do things on impulse that I wouldn’t normally do. If you self-diagnose for an illness, tell people that and don’t act like you 100% have it until you are actually diagnosed

Imo the blood point economy and the entire current system with the blood web is just a hindrance for new and returning players. Dumping loads of points on players is just a bandaid solution to them still having to rely on RNG or a long time investment to get what they want. At this point the game has been out so long most reoccurring players already have what they want so they should just switch it to a store. There's no reason new players shouldn't be able to just buy the perks for the characters they own and current players shouldn't be able to use the items and addons they find the most fun. If the carrot tied to the string that is the blood web was what held players to the game it would have died years ago Also, confirmed Scott believes poor people shouldn't have fun or wear cosmetics

To really spell out how limited time cosmetics influence people for those who don't get it. Imagine you are someone who only wants to spend a limited amount of money on DBD for X reason. (ex. you're a kid/someone with limited income, you just don't want to spend a lot at once on something like skins out of principle, maybe you know you have a problem spending too much and want to budget it more carefully) There is a skin in the store that you want, you've been eyeing it for a short while, it looks cool and it is for a character you play often. However, some limited time cosmetics have just been released, and they will only be around for a short while. You kinda like some of them, maybe they aren't for a character you are playing right now, but maybe you would play them more if you had a cool/funny new skin to run around in, or you like the idea of playing them in the future (when the skin won't be available). For X reason though, you would not be able to get the non-limited time skin and the limited one at the same time. You will be able to get one now and in the future get another, and in an ideal world you surely would have both. So you buy the limited time skin and plan on buying the non-limited you've been eyeing (that you might even like more) sometime later. At the very least it uses psychological tricks to cause people to plan on making future purchases. The most important part to notice though, is how the time limit motivated you to spend more. If both skins were just available in the shop, you would get the one you've been eyeing and pass on the one you don't like as much. Maybe in the future you would buy it, only if you start to play that character more, but maybe you are over it buy then, or maybe at that time there is an even cooler skin for them you get instead. The abuse of FOMO means that sometimes, when you want two or more different things, buying one you don't like the most is the most logical option to have both, and it locks more people in to buying both over the long term.

The neurodivergent tangent is so so so misdirected saying you're learning but then going on a tangent about people who self diagnose isn't really "learning", it's using your platform of nearly 200k people to say harmful shit. I understand in stream because it can at least be challenged by chat, but uploading it definitely dulls that aspect People can lose rights over getting diagnosed, diagnosis is extremely expensive and inaccessible for many things, and the science itself on neurodivergent experiences is often incredibly behind because they're written with a muddied history laden with eugenics and other fucked ideas. There are huge lists of valid reasons to pursue self diagnosis, especially for conditions that can't be helped with medication. Self diagnosis empowers people to give themselves accommodations so they can start taking care of themselves, and it often leads to them seeking diagnosis if they can do so safely. I don't mean this to be aggressive, but I hope you can reconsider sharing this dangerous position in the future
@ScottJund

I think that's a fairly reasonable take. It just gets muddied by "quirky" 14 year olds that want to be treated special for shit they essentially made up. I feel it takes away from the people suffering from true conditions and that makes me mad.

24:10 It's not about whether somebody likes or dislikes the skin or if they can afford it. FOMO is an intentionally designed psychological attack to capitalize on people's subconscious inclinations toward apprehension and regret. That's why people call it a predatory tactic, and it counts whether it is being used for your money or time. The problem lies when it is a matter of the scale: how suitably any given product should be priced. While an hour of gameplay can be reasonable, there is no legitimate reason for a skin in any video game to be $10-$15 or take a hundred hours or more within a limited time window. That's higher than many games are priced on sale, and for the average person, that's basically demanding the vast majority of their free time in that window. Most people feel varying degrees of it at any age, even for minor things, like cosmetics in a stupid game. It is generally more prevalent in youth and becomes a learned practice to curb it. But that practice can also wane for elderly people, who have to weigh whether or not they want to experience or participate in any given media or community against their own mortality. Edit: FOMO was first coined about the term in 2004.,

23:45 Basically the sole reason I disagree with Pixel bush on this point here is because he's saying "it's now or never" even though the cosmetics ARE in fact coming back, it's just gonna take a year. So personally I don't even think FOMO is really applicable here. Just think in comparison to all the Demo/Steve/Nancy outfits. Those were really a "Buy now before they get removed, they will most likely not be coming back"-situation.

About the cosmetic thing remember games like TF2 or WOW that are more fondly remembered by millennials than the newest generation and how they built their games around cosmetics or in game purchases. Customization has been a key factor in games for a while now. People who enjoy a game for its artstyle/tone/story are more likely to buy into the cosmetic market. The more competitive a fanbase is I feel like the less they'll care about things such as cosmetics and while DBD isn't a party game it's still one that was originally sold on being a game mimicking the style of old horror movies and not an ultra competitive high skill type game. Personally cosmetics are just neat things you get once every couple of months because it makes a character you like a bit cooler. People who frequently dish out $10-$15 for skins kind of amaze me. There's some well made skins but at most I can get getting a skin for a couple of your favorite characters or just putting the auric cells you got in the last rift into the next rift. Also fomo shouldn't really exist for seasonal skins like who's buying christmas sweaters in April?

16:30 FOMO has been more of a prevalent term these days because all of the drama that has been around the internet with games releasing as services selling stuff in this manner. And let's be honest, one of the most popular games in these past two years is a Gacha game, which all of it's monetization is based around "pay or you dont get to use this character" which has led people to talk more about this kind of practice in an industry so rotten.
