A quick shootout between the Sennheiser MKH 8060 and the Rode NTG-3 shotgun microphones. This isn't a terribly scientific test, it's just a way for you to hear the basic differences between the microphones. Both microphones were plugged into a Sound Devices 302 mixer, and the audio was recorded directly into the camera, a Panasonic GH2.

I'm quite surprised that so many would prefer the Rode over the Sennheiser. Ok, the price tag is one thing, can't argue with that. But obviously the Sennheiser has more directivity, adding less room to the sound. Imho it is less hassle to eq frequency bumps here and there than to dereverberate and denoise the recording. Besides that, eqing is way less degrading the audio than the other processing.

Regardless of price the Rode sounded damn good and probably why I've ordered one today. NTG3 Shotgun mic great for Movie Trailer style Voice Overs.

The Rode wasn't bad at all but the MKH clearly plays in an other league. On headphones they both sounded astonishingly good but on large Monitor Speakers the Rode has had some sort of lower frequency reflections that the MKH was missing. You still have to give the rode that the Sound is great for the Price however one should also consider that MKH's have proven themselves over many years and shown to be long time Investments. One great Company that is often overlooked a bit sadly is Beyerdynamic. All but one MIC's they make are Made in Germany and they have been in the Professional market for quite some time now, too. I had several Shooting-days with the MC 736 and MC 737 and really loved both of them (particularly the 737).

More room sound in the Rode, but for the price difference I would pick it anyday! I'd have enough leftover to buy a professional noise reduction plugin and change.

Bought the MKH 8060. Tried it with three different male voices, It sounds very nasal to me..I have to Eq it in post. I dont like it. For 1200e it will probably go back. Dont listen to the hype guys, a cheaper mic can work just as good. Save your money and by a good lav too.

I like the sound of the 8060 better. Fuller on the low end and smoother on the off axis. But remember the $600 diffrence

Being that the 8060 was closer it gave it I believe a big lower end, plus NTG 3 is only responsive from 40hz and up.

@@wcsdiaries It just means you don’t need to put the gain up that much. For me, 10-11 o’clock is ideal. It’s LOUD.
