Great example of how to get results by learning your gear rather than complaining about limitations. The D500 is still an amazing camera almost 8 years later. Always enjoy the videos.

Thanks Dave!! Yes I think people seem to find a limitation in everything but I am also for learning to use what you have. Even this 8 year old camera..feels like I don't use it anywhere close to its full potential

Great tips James! Always did wonder about how to take videos of wildlife at those insane long reach and still get acceptable camera shake. 😁 good to see your video workflow.

Thanks Keith. I cut out the first 5 seconds or so of shake every time haha. Forgot to show that in the video. Typically just need a couple seconds worth of clips for most videos.

The skill, techniques, and patience learned from mastering older gear like the D500 are invaluable. they allow you to adapt and still get the shots when the technology in the latest cameras just freaks out and stops working. Which in my experience it will do, usually at the critical moment.

Interesting that the D500 does not do autofocus. I know on the Z6ii there is Autofocus Fulltime AF-F and I use that when doing video on the Z6ii. I will have to check that on the D500.

Hey Ron - yes I believe the D850 had some kind of rudimentary video autofocus that the d500 doesn't. I use the z6 and the autofocus works pretty well for me.

@samand.1146 you know what, I had used it on the d850 and I guess the d500 should work the same. Is it pretty good? I will probably use it more often and must have given up on it when I first got the camera

@forced_perspective Usually, I use my D500 for photography rather than videography, but I'm really interested in taking some wildlife videos. I'll let you know about my experience

I will do the same. Actually after this comment I tried it out again at home and it seems like it might be pretty usable. I will try it out later. Thanks so much for reminding me on this. Looks like the tracking feature is also not too bad

Don't depend on D500 for regular video shooting. It's not the tool for that. It is very difficult to focus on and record. especially if you are using specs. Also most probably you will miss the action almost all time

Very true. I would not use it for video for example if going to some exotic place where I can't afford to miss shots. For day to day use it's pretty much ok
