---
Some people say you absolutely need to eat protein before your workouts to maximize muscle and strength gains.
Others say eating before you train doesn’t matter, but eating after is vital.
Others still say neither of these “feeding windows” matter, and that you just need to make sure you’re eating enough protein on the whole.
Science isn’t exactly clear on this matter, either, because each of these people have studies that purportedly bolster their arguments.
And so you’re left wondering who’s right and what to do.
Should you “play it safe” and just eat protein before and after every workout? Or should you just ignore everyone and just eat on a schedule that you like most?
Well, in this podcast, we’re going to get to the bottom of all of it, and it starts with this:
As far as eating protein goes, eating enough every day is what matters most for gaining muscle and strength as quickly as possible.
Everything else related to protein intake--when you eat it, how many servings you eat per day, how large each serving is, etc.--is subordinate to total protein intake.
That doesn’t mean these other factors don’t matter at all, though.
If you scoff at them, you're overlooking an important part of natural muscle building:
While 80% of your progress comes from the fundamentals, you can speed things up by making a number of minor improvements to your diet, training, and supplementation.
Individually, the effects of each refinement may be slight, but collectively, they become significant over time.
Well, protein timing is one of those slight refinements, and it includes pre- and post-workout nutrition.
As you’ll soon see, eating protein before and after workouts isn’t as important as many people claim, but it’s not entirely without merit, either.
Let’s get started.

Great video Mike. There's a lot of confusion on this topic. As a 52 year old intermittent fasting weight lifter, I still make gains just eating in an 8-hour window everyday. I've done a lot of research indicating protein synthesis is active 4 hours after consumption all the way up to 24 hours. Personally I don't think it matters when you consume protein, as long as you had sufficient protein the previous day before a workout. Keep up the good work - Dan👍

yeah, I did the IF 16/8 for nearly 18 months and went from fat, to completely "jacked" people said at 6% bodyfat. I ended up stopping IF a couple months ago (family issues and I couldn't lift and just ate all I wanted, gained 15 lbs of flab). I'm now trying the 40g protein every 3 hours with 5 meals and will report back how that works by comparison.

Mike! I love your information and your company and the amount of time and research you put into your products! It’s awesome! Thanks for being an honest guy! I would have hoped you would have included in the research for intra-workout protein too (as well as eventually introduce a whey+ flavor that’s more intraworkout friendly... pina colada, cherry cooler... you know something more juice flavored... if you never thought it... could be a great idea... especially since you along with many no longer recommend BCAAS). That was my rant lol! Awesome video!

I have been amateur bodybuilding for more than 20 years and I am in my 70's Lately, I have been doing two short workouts 20-25 minutes each day and my morning workout is fasted using Forge for its HMB and your Whey and some mixed protein with breakfast after. For my afternoon workout I take my whey before and a meal with casein in it after. I also use Pulse and Recharge.

I loved your video. It was to the point and was informative without leading me on and being like “buy this to know!” But I have one problem. What you are not factoring in is the “placebo effect” of workout nutrition. I eat before my workouts because I feel more prepared doing so. When I reach my burnout sets it I haven’t eaten I sometimes allow myself to feel weak whereas if I have eaten I have no excuse. Above anything working out is a mental game and if there is a type of nutrition that works for you and gets you to the gym at all then do it.

Yeah of course it's one kg per 1 lbs, most bodybuilders drink 100 buckets a day, totally normal to have 176 lbs of protein daily. 😂
