PEAK DISTRICT WALK FEATURING CROWDEN, LADDOW ROCKS AND BLACK HILL
"Crowden, Laddow Rocks and Black Hill”
Filmed 29th June 2023
Post-production completed 7th July 2023
A walk along the Pennine Way from Crowden to Black Hill. My original intention was to follow the “Crowden Horseshoe” walk, but once I got to the summit of Black Hill I was quite apprehensive of the boggy moorland I had to cross, so in the end I just retraced my steps along the Pennine Way to Crowden. Not quite as I planned, but it was an absolutely lovely walk all the same, so nothing was lost at all.
Filmed in the Peak District in the counties of Derbyshire and West Yorkshire. Locations include Crowden, Laddow Rocks and Black Hill.
Written, presented, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

Hi Patrick, I’ve done black hill trig point from the Wessenden side but I am definitely going to do this walk! How lovely and Crowden is a place I know quite well. I had an experience should we say with bog a few weeks ago in Helmshore… I was shoulder deep in it and it was a very scary experience but fortunately I was with my sister. So you did the right thing listening to yourself and returning your route. Thanks for a great video 👍🏻

Once again, your video is making me want to return to the Dark Peak. This route is possibly my favourite. You seem to quickly lose that road and it feels very remote. I think the story goes that the trig has been left high and dry on that stump as a result of peat erosion. Not sure how much truth there is in that! Thanks for another great video.

Crowden Great Brook is one of my favourite valleys. It's particularly spectacular when Laddow Rocks are approached from across the moor from Chew Reservoir and you arrive at Laddow and the spectacular view suddenly opens out before you, especially in autumn when the valley has hues of red, brown and gold. I presume you were intending to return via Tooleyshaw Moor - a brilliant round walk, so a pity you missed that. I have many happy memories of the whole area there, so many thanks, Patrick, for the film, particularly since we were doing that walk a couple of weeks ago, but it was so hot and humid that day that my asthma was making it difficult for me, and we turned back just before reaching the top of Laddow.

I love this valley, my first time I've actually walked up through it. The views from Laddow Rocks were some of the best I've seen in the Peak District. I was planning to walk back across Tooleyshaw Moor and was disappointed I missed that part of the route. However, I just felt very uncomfortable walking across that mass expanse of bog particularly as I was alone, so I just made that strategic decision to retrace my steps, which was a lovely walk anyway. A very good walk Patrick. The Laddow Rocks do look really good, and a great accomplishment for you to reach the Black Hill trig point. You had the sense not to take chances through that swamp. About that strange barmaid, it just shows that one of New Mill's famous Love Heart lozenges can put a smile on a sour face! Thank you for this presentation.

It's a lovely walk indeed Ffranc with some of the best views I've seen for a while, but it was a tough one too. I just felt uncomfortable crossing that bog, but I was on my own so I made that decision. That barlady was a strange one, that story had to be told! 😀👍

It is a beautiful hike Patrick. I went the other way and was taken unawares by that exact point. I was lulled into a false sense of security as it hadn't been that bad anticlockwise. I went in over both knees. I had my lunch on Laddow Rocks and went out from there to Featherbed Moss and Lad's Leap. It certainly is beautiful up there and the views are amazing. Such a shame that the workers were in unmarked graves but sadly that reflected their abilities to pay. But they never leave anyone on top. A fantastic hike and a tough one in points too. Soldier's Lump is a beautiful Trig. Do you think you will ever do it from the other end up through the quarry and Hey Edge Trig?Thanks for sharing Patrick.

I remember watching your video Chris, so in hindsight I would have been better doing this route in the opposite direction, so yes maybe I will do that route one day. However, on this occasion I wanted to walk the Pennine Way northwards as I had been doing that on my last few walks. Laddow Rocks is a great place for a lunch stop, some of the finest views I've seen. It is a shame about the unmarked graves and Soldier's Lump is a great trig. Another great walk & video Patrick, again in the more remote parts. Quite agree on diversions when needed ..We've had to dodge many a field full of inquisitive bullocks during our walks with our dog and had to quickly re-route or turn back ! :o)

We did the same walk early in the year patrick and turned back at black hill like you too. We have since completed the hole walk but we did it the other way round. It's amazing up there. I look forward to watching your videos keep them coming. Robin fran and Hector.

Thanks for sharing your walk! I grew up about 10 miles north of here and my mum still lives in the same place. I have just been to Laddow rocks for the first time today so feel like I have being missing on the opportunity to do some amazing walks for many years. it is an amazing place! I didn't go any further than Laddow rocks today as it was pretty hard going and I was short on time but will definitely go back and maybe carry on to chew reservoir next time, it's the second highest in reservoir England. I may try black hill from Digley reservoir at some point and also want to explore the nearby Ramsden clough as that also looks pretty impressive.

You must be the fittest man on earth, 10 mile walk, i only have a walk to shop and back and im jiggered lol! Loved where you sat eating your lunch, that wispy grass looked absolutely beautiful, i used to call this grass honey grass as a child as one of our neighbours had loads of this grass in the back garden and i loved it waving in the wind! Ps i thought bar maids supposed to be pretty 😅, great story that it made me laugh!

I must admit I was cream crackered for several days after this 😊 It ended up being 11 miles, but it was mainly the terrain that made it a tough walk, very rocky underfoot. It was indeed a lovely spot to eat lunch, just to watch the world go by. That barmaid was amazing, she might have been pretty once, but her sour face made her look the opposite! 😊👍

Another amazing video, Patrick. Shame about the service you received in the pub, but at least she did crack a smile I guess. I was on Stanage Edge a week or two ago, and me and my friend had come up Long Causeway from Redmires Reserviors. We did a little of Stanage and headed back toward Long Causeway on a different path, across the moorland and it was boggy and tough going then! My friend was OK but I found it difficult and tough going, especially as it was uneven and the moorland grass was knee high. Still, it made for a good walk🚶‍♂️

Interesting you beginning from Crowden. Amazing, we were there only a few weeks ago filming our walk up to Laddow Rocks through Crowden Great Brook Valley. In fact I even recognised the start of Pennine Way, including the plaque you saw of Harry Phillips walker for over 60 years 1980. We enjoyed the same paronamic views as yourself as well as same rocks. We certainly seem to be following each other. Maybe one day will bump into you.! Unfortunately we never made it to the top of those rocks as extremely humid weather made the climbing up affected Michael. Think you did a better job than us! Makes me envious 😊 Well done though. 😊Appropriate atmospheric music to match mood.

I won't lie though Shanita, I was absolutely exhausted for about three days after completing this walk! It wasn't so much that I ended up doing 11 miles, it was more that it was so rocky and uneven underfoot for so much of the way, which made it very tough. A lovely walk all the same. Thanks for your lovely comments as always 👍

@@solitaryrambler Just to agree about how exhausting that climb up to Ladder Rocks was for us both on an intensely humid day. We had to abort because Michael had breathing problems, hence my envy of you achieving so much.

I did laugh in a good way Patrick at your excitement in getting up into that valley. Yeah, it's exhilarating to be in such places and it was proven even more so on top. For sure a great view. Ha, miserable people actually want to rule with their misery Patrick - if they can alter your composure then they are relieved. But you guys had walked and nothing was going to stop the upward trend. Well the upward trend of this walk continued - no bog bashing today but beautiful meander down to the hostel. Yeah, a lovely extended walk. Makes me wanna get up into the Black Mountains. I was definitely excited getting up this valley Mark. It was awesome and I felt very exhilarated despite my deciding to retrace my steps back to Crowden, so I ended up getting those amazing views twice in the end 😊 Yeah I don't understand the misery of some people, but it was so good when Lou actually made that woman just crack a smile when she offered her a sweet! 😂 Hope you get up into the Black Mountains soon Mark. We're getting some real autumn weather at last now, so the best time for walking in my opinion. All the best as always Mark 👍

Laddow Rocks was fantastic. I don't actually think I've seen that area before. I'm not surprised you gave the bogs a miss. Better to be safe than sorry and you live to walk another dah. That walk was very pleasant and some great views. A lot of walking again for you though. That pub must lose a lot of custom. She sounds awful. With an attitude like that she should not be in customer services. My guess is that it occurred in Castleton. You will have to pay her a visit on your next boys night out real ale excursion 😁I watch Lou and Lols channel, so i look forward to watching that group walk. The views from Laddow Rocks are some of the best I've seen for some time, just incredible. I wasn't happy with crossing that boggy area, so yes better to be safe than sorry. It was 11 miles in all so one of the longest walks I've filmed. It was the rocky terrain that made it tough rather than the distance to be honest, but I'd do that walk again like a shot. Funnily enough two of my previous ale trips have been to that pub in question, but the occasion with Lou and Lol was the first time I've seen that woman there. It wasn't Castleton though.
