If you're looking for that classic calfskin sound, literal calfskin isn't the only option. In this episode we feature the fine work of Kentville Drums, the maker of kangaroo hide drumheads from Australia.
We'll demo a Kentville drumhead on a Craviotto 14x5.5" Steambent Birdseye Maple snare drum with sticks and brushes. In case you haven't already watched it, the "care and feeding" instructions are the same as what we demonstrated in our previous video for calfskin drumheads: • Ep. 4 How to Tune Up a...

I've had one for more than a year now and I've done many gigs with it, it has a real warm tone with brushes and a nice crisp tone with drumsticks, I like it very much. It was recommended to me by my Brush/Drum teacher Anthony Stanislavski. He said he has had the same snare drum head for 5 years and is sounding as good as the day he got it. As long as you release some tension off of the tension rods when not being played, it will last a long, long time and it sounds great.

If you live in a climate that stays much the same,these will be great, however,here in Scotland i know the problems temperature variations can create problems, with animal skins on drums, when doing a show in a badly insulated theatre in December (pantomime ) where it's cold overnight,then once the curtain goes up and the lights go up over the the orchestra pit ,then these heads will be like all over the place..the name weatherking, is by no accident.

Geez I used calf skin heads in the early 70's as did Al Greene's drummer. Krupa was my hero and when I bought leather heads from Slingerland his silhouette was on the package

I had some of these made for an old British snare and kick drum that were odd sizes, they sound great and not seeing a bare aluminium hoop poking out has really lessened the anxiety of existence.

@@SoundsLikeADrum I couldn't resist! :-) I must tell you that I bought me a kentville head for my snare and I absolutely love it! It has a nice bounce to it (partial pun intended) that feels more rubbery that a synthetic head. Tunes very easily, sounds great tuned low or high, played loud or soft. This is truly a revelation for me. (Sound like I'm fishing for an endorsement doesn't it?) Great videos! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Have you tried Bovid ?., I going to try Kangaroo.. I know about the culling process.. used to live in Northern Territory.. OZ>> reminds me of that scene in Croc Dundee when Mic chased off the hunters.. I did try Bovid.. and they RYan can custom shave each head.. either Mule or calf. batter or reso.. seems sweet thus far..had 2 heads break.. now just tweeking the thickness. hes pretty cool about replacing if the head is weeker and not suitable.. or has some flaws.. something I know alot about as I used to build Taiko drums and repair djembe and Djun Djun for most of the African dance schools in NYC,, years ago

Sounds Like A Drum Brush wise, yes. They do a great job at getting the responsiveness of a skin head. As far as synthetic goes, they're pretty great.

Are they being used primarily as batter heads, or what about using it as the snare head? Have you tried these with Toms? How about the differences between the Fair, Medium, and Heavy? I really want to try them, but they are expensive. Thanks for this video, and I look forward to your response! Blessings!!!
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 6 жыл бұрын
They make heads as thin as 8mil, though that may be a bit thick the snare side of most modern drum set snare drums. They sound equally (if not more) impressive on toms, as they help to bring out the fundamental of the shell by taming the overtones. As far as the various thicknesses, we prefer a similar take to various thicknesses for synthetic head - thicker heads on larger drums, thinner heads on smaller drums. When it comes to snare batters, you're balancing durability and sensitivity along with elements of tonal control (a thicker head will have an inherently deeper tone due to the extra mass). These heads are definitely worth checking out!

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide this educational channel, and for taking the time to respond to your audience/subscribers. I've had some experience with the more traditional calf skin heads, and I live where the humidity is usually quite high, but I've found that if the drums with calf heads do not experience a sudden and drastic change in the weather and/or humidity, they have been manageable for me. I have some old/vintage calf skin heads that are on drums inside my home, and I have not taken them out to gigs. I have a 28" Leedy Bass Drum that I'm told might be from around 1930, and the drum itself, and what just might be the original calf skin heads are all in great shape. This Bass Drum is displayed in our living room, and at times of high humidity from outside, I can see the calf skin loosen and tighten all on it's own as if breathing..... Sorry to start rambing! Once again, thank you for this most informative channel which you provide. I would really like to try these Kentville Drum Heads, and when I do, I'll have to let y'all know.... thanks and Blessings!

Drummer at a bar I would schlep in had a snare head made of snake skin (seriously). I was too young to appreciate any particulars about it beyond "that's cool!", but the opening roll of Fastway's "Say What You Will" had far more authority than the original. And he was always going on about having to re-tighten the head. Again.

So how do you like this head on a wood vs metal drum ? I have a 99' DW/Craviotto 5.5" maple snare that I'm considering putting this head on - the head would then end up "living" on this drum. I don't have many really nice snare drums, but I do have a 6.5 Supraphonic. Thoughts on it "living" on my Craviotto ? Thanks! Really Dig this Channel !

Calf skin or kangaroo skin heads for snare side are manufactured? If not, how do you choose snare side heads?
@austinshoupe3003
@austinshoupe3003 2 жыл бұрын
You could get what's called a 'slunk' head. Usually it's made of the skin from unborn calves. I think mylar has generally been accepted as better overall. Even the orchestral guys typically keep plastic snare sides.

So a question for you, you said last week that this type or head works well with jazz and softer playing correct? If that is so then if I wanted to use this on a rock gig or contemporary gig would i be ok doing so?
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Nathaniel, great question - I've used these heads now for a wide variety of gigs that got quite loud without any difficulties at all. I think that it's more that people often automatically think "old-style heads are good for old-style music" and pass over things like this for modern performance situations without really seeing if the sound and feel is something that could add a cool dimension to their music. These Kentville heads being tucked onto metal flesh hoops rather than wood also seem to be much more resilient to harder playing without pulling out at the edge (which, frankly, can be an issue with synthetic heads too - it's happened to me), and if durability of the skin itself is also a concern you can go for a heavy-weight skin since that's an option they offer. For what it's worth, I used this drum with this head on back-to-back shows last saturday, the first being a rock thing and the second a very VERY low-volume singer-songwriter and it smoked both shows with no tuning adjustments or anything. Also, it's worth mentioning that we aren't affiliated with the company at all and i'm only singing the praises of these because I buy and use them myself. Hope that helps! Cheers :)

Can you say something about how kangaroo compares to calf? (I know and love calf but have no idea of kangaroo.)
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 4 жыл бұрын
Well the short answer is I don’t use calf anymore 😂 I find the the kentville more durable and warmer when wide open than the calf I’ve used. The brush sound is a bit beefier too and it seems less prone to stretch over time. Having these heads tucked on metal flesh hoops also is a big step up for durability and perform better with triple flange hoops than the old wood flesh hoops do (no spin/pull-out. -Cody

You talk about the natural sound but you forgot about another natural thing on wich we have no control : the weather. When the hygrometry increases, the pitch goes down. Sometimes, you cannot even play, so much the head is loosen. Remember, the elders put electric bulbs in the toms to warm up the heads. I played an 11 inches joust drum for traditionnal events in south of France, the next year I asked a crafstman to build a 12 drum and I put a Fiberskyn ! I tune my kit on an open chord (sus 4) with the bass, even the snare is tuned cause I take off the wires for some songs or solos. I like it to sing. And I'm not a vegetarian but I don't eat much meat. Killing youg animals is indecent. With calfskins, you can only play in studios and controlled indoor scenes. Try this in the open in Seattle or Liverpool !

Is no one taking into account that the snare it's on is a solid shell craviotto!? The tone of the shell is playing HUGELY into the sound and tone everyone is experiencing in watching this video. Results may vary unless you have a solid shell or stave!
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! This is a fair point and not to be discounted, but I will say that since shooting this I’ve also had this head on a Worldmax brass snare, a COB Ludwig and a cherry stave piccolo (just because I was curious) and there is definitely a fundamental tone and feel that remains regardless of the instrument. Having said that, It for sure just modifies the intrinsic character of the drum you use it with, same as any other head. :)

Number one factor in sound is the drums dimensions. Second is heads and tuning. Third is construction. Crappy drums obviously have a limit to how good they can sound, but heads and tuning can accomplish a lot.

I've gone through three Kentville heads. They sound great but do not last. I am not a banger. I play jazz. I tried out Kentville on my snare. Not one of them lasted more than six months to a year. I can't justify paying three times more for a drum head that's lasts a tenth of a head that it sounds only marginally better then.

Oh please. There is a very distinct difference between the sound of plastic and hide. Rick Door recently did a good side by side with his concert snares if you want something very to the point. For sure hide gets over hyped but the jaded 'i doesn't matter and youre all saps' approach is far more obnoxious and unhelpful.

Please, please- stop playing the drumming audio background when you're speaking. Your content needs no further embellishment to get the point across in an entertaining informative way. Save the background noises for mass merchandisers whose consumers can't focus on words for 5 minutes or so--these aren't your watchers. Less clutter in the noise = better video and a welcome change.
