This timeline explores the history of Species 8472, also known as the Undine post-2375 and the last encounter the crew of the USS Voyager had with them.
The Species plays a great role in Star Trek Online, but how did it come to this? They seemed satisfied that Starfleet would leave them alone.
Well, it was mostly the Klingon Empire as well as their own paranoia. Once the Undine had the technology to mimic our realm's inhabitants, they used it to infiltrate the alpha and beta quadrant powers. Maybe to just keep an eye on us all, maybe for more nefarious purposes.
Star Trek Online is full of stories and call-backs to the TV series of days gone and to come. Set in the Star Trek universe's 25th century it places you in the center of these events in an ever expanding series of tales.
Join me as I fulfill the role of a Starfleet captain and Temporal Agent, Mark Hale from the 23rd century now facing fresh challenges against the Borg Advance aboard the USS Armiger.

Ultimately, the Federation itself admitted that it was ultimately too slow to act, as will be stated later on in the series itself by Captain Shon. Yes, they worked to deal with the problem, but ultimately they became too afraid of stepping on the wrong toes. On the other mek'leth, the Klingons ultimately screwed up, and played into the Undine/Iconian hands. The Iconians wanted war between the Federation and Klingons, and to an extent so did the Undine as a way of keeping the two powers occupied. On the third stabbing implement, in an ironic twist the Klingon/Gorn War effectively started the Klingon Empire down a path to more effectively mirror the Federation. Gorn were subjugated, then... made an essential part of the empire. They became the Klingon's answer to the Vulcans, and set off a chain reaction of several more races joining formally with the Klingons as sort-of-equals. Effectively, while rash, idiotic, and counterproductive, were it not for the further series of catastrophies to come what was done would have created a Klingon Empire that would become effectively an 'Imperial Alliance of Worlds' to act as a counterbalance to the United Federation of Planets. Klingons for humans; gorn for vulcans; orions for andorians; nausicans for tellarites; ferasians for caitians (literally, given they're basically the rom/vulcan split all over again), so on and so forth. If only if it wasn't for what is to come.

First of all, SPOILERS (not for me but for those who have not reached the Iconian War arc). 2nd; I agree with you on how the Klingons in an attempt to distance themselves from the Federation become more like them. [Spoilers], This along with the renewal of the Khitomer Accords foreshadows the eventuality of the Klingon Empire being fully integrated into the U.F.P. as seen in some of the episodes where you go to the future.

@@occultatumquaestio5226 It's been nearly five years since the end of the Iconian arc. It's impossible to not come across information on what happens. Chiding me for spoilers is like chiding me for saying "Vader is Luke's Father". A bit like trying to shut the doors after the Fortress Ships have escaped the Dyson Sphere already. As for why the Empire gets intergrated, it's rather quite simple, and was covered much more reasonably. Between the... fifteen bajillion wars coming up, the industrial core of the empire effectively gets ripped out. It's a major point why the Empire actually wants to not fight more wars later on, they simply can't take any more. Integrating the Gorn and others is effectively the right step a century too late.

@@defies4626 ; 1.) That is not an accurate comparison. Empire Strikes Back, or Star Trek's Wrath of Khan for a more similar film, are both decades old and are a well known and access medium in the tens if not hundreds of millions. Star Trek Online on the other is more of a niche game with only more of the hardcore lore fans who are gamers playing it to a frequent extent so only in the tens to hundreds of thousands. Because of this more people are unaware of the game's existence, let alone over all plot. Plus across the many episodes Certifiably Ingame has made on this series. I have seen a plethora of comments from people who have never played the game before nor no the story. People like you and I make the minority not the majority. However I do like the Dyson Sphere analogy you made. 2.) I do not fully understand you were are attempt the say, the wording for the first sentence throws me off but for the rest of it, I do agree with you and I was just adding more evidence to support that. I don't think this mission is available anymore but there used to be a mission where you went to fluidic space and encountered alpha quadrant ships attacking the Undine in fluidic space. This was, analysis of these alpha quadrant ships showed them to be made with materials and processes foreign to the alpha quadrant. It was hinted that the Iconians had used these fake ships to incite the Undine into attacking the alpha quadrant to weaken the alpha quadrant for the Iconian invasion to come. That is why the Undine started to sent infiltrators into the alpha quadrant. The Undine thought the alpha quadrant had violated the agreement between Captain Janeway and the Undine.

0:48 I’m sure that Starfleet would have known about Species 8472 as early as 2374, as the EMH told them “everything that’s happened to [Voyager’s] crew” when he was transferred to the USS Prometheus. It probably wouldn’t have been an official report on them or anything, but the Doctor would certainly been able to tell them a lot about the conflict with the Borg, fluidic space and their biology. 1:13 “Tripod species”? There’s a race of camera stands in Star Trek!? Or did you mean “tripedal”?

The best way to deal with it would have been to stop it at the source. Voyager needed to spend more time talking and show them when they had the chance. They could have built a great ally for the federation if they had done this. Share the weapons technology that harmed them, share the interactions between them and the Borg and just take the time. Species 8472 is a smart species they would have seen the reality of it all had you given them the time. This would have been worth stopping the trip home to make it right.

If the Klingon empires campian to root out the undine ended Hadn't ended up with the gorn being enslaved and yet another war with the federation I might be inclined to agree with their aproch at least in theory. Go in root them out. Action needed to be taken even if the undine have some noble goal like protecting themselves or uniting everyone against the Borg or some other threat they still chose to do so with secrecy and subvertion rather than reaching out to those inclined to listen like what ever remained of Voyager crew and open ties. And plead their case. But it's clear the Klingons used the undine as an excuse for war. But I don't think star fleet and the federation where in the right with their own secretly. While their methods might be the more humine and ultermaite effective as there unlikely to just kill and undine they find. They should know by now espeily after everything that happened with the changings that it's beter to curtail the Klingon ambitions rather than lie to them and put there head in the sand A task force world be ideal but said it the plot demands everyone be stupid so every one is

You could also consider the potential influence the Federation could have had on Klingon policy if they'd acted as an ally. Maybe instead of annexing the Hegemony to the Empire, they could appoint Worf as military governor, with a joint Klingon/Starfleet task force to occupy the Hegemony, until the Gorn could establish a new government.

If the founder changelings can change into clouds and things like that could they turn into fluidic space itself and not only copy the form of 8472 and their ships but actually take on the advantages of doing so like being immune to borg assimilation and making their star ships very powerful. Even copying 8472s abilities to a small degree would make the founders and the dominion alot stronger.

Going after the Undine was never going to be something the Federation was going to consider. And the Klingons had many other problems to occupy their attention at the time. It really shouldn't be a surprise that they opted to preserve the pre-Undine status quo after the infiltrators were dealt with, rather than get bogged down trying to punish the Undine.

The better way must be in between. I certainly condemn the klingon approach much easier because of the loss of lives, but Starfleet also should sometimes put more trust in its overall staff and act in a larger scale, keeping the information until operations are on the way to solve the most pressing issues.
@GamerX51
@GamerX51 5 жыл бұрын
While I also certainly condemn the loss of lives caused by the Klingons, "putting trust in your staff" is a dangerous mantra to follow when you're dealing with a species that can shape shift. Especially if that species also happens to be telepathic. The Federation's leadership had no idea just how far the Undine's infiltration had spread, or how much of Starfleet's admiralty had been compromised. They had no way of determining who was an Undine infiltrator and who wasn't at that point, which is why they decided to play the long game.

A collaborative response to the Undine infiltrators would have been best, with both the Federation and the Klingon Empire looking into ways to detect Undine accurately, and then detaining the agents, or killing them when necessary. And some speed is necessary, as we know, for example, that the Undine we escorted early on was on his way to replace the Vulcan Abbot, only being prevented from doing so when the Klingons arrived first and killed the Abbot instead. We also discover various other infiltrators, both Founders and Undine, who, if not stopped, could do great damage. We also find out later on that the KDF has a covert ops section, which recognizes the value of striking swiftly and in secret so as to reduce possible losses.

Sot out a way to detect them, quickly and effectively, like scanners at every door where they can find something classified above "for public consumption", detain the agents, have Section perform a very thorough questioning, and by thorough I mean them begging to tell about their grandmothers ingrown hair on the bikini line of her 3rd leg, then execute them silently and never speak of it. Put them in an escape pod with 0 internal controls and shoot them straight into Jupiter or the sun, burning every bit of evidence.

You can tell it so: Cryptic/PWE is in close contact to CBS, because they own all the rights on this brand.. And nearly all things inside STO need to be "confirmed" by CBS, for example; the Odessey Class (Enterprise F) even was/is a design, that CBS or their designers allready had in chart, but never used. Cryptic then just got the "modell" , modified a bit, and brought it as the shipclass into sto.. And as i remember, one of CBS´s storywriter allready invent the name "Undine" . There were also books that plays after voyagers return / after nemesis. And in this timeline, the Undines or their name were also known... So in total, even as the name never been told in any official series, the name is kinda canon, within all the later story scripts..

I always thought the Undine were nerfed far too much in STO. Sure, they needed to be taken down a few pegs in order to deal with them. This was a species that could easily thrash the Borg. So they could have simply obliterated every home world of the Federation, Klingons and Romulans if they had appeared with the same amount of power they had in STV. But having them go from purging entire worlds of life with relative ease to sneaking around, spying, and being easily killed when discovered is just too much of a nerf.

I think that in retrospect, the Federation should have adopted the Klingon approach. I'm not sure which was superior, but it's hard to say that protecting a covert operation - even one of great importance - was worth sacrificing their alliance with the Klingons. Had the Federation joined the war against the Gorn, they could have checked Klingon aggression. Perhaps instead of outright annexing the Hegemony, they could have appointed a joint Klingon/Federation administration over the Hegemony, until the Gorn could set up a new government. Come to think of it, Worf would have been an ideal candidate for military governor. More importantly, instead of starting a completely pointless war, the Federation would have reinforced ties with the Klingon Empire, and both powers would have had more resources to throw at problems like the Borg, the Undine, and eventually the Iconians. Would the Borg still hold Vega if instead of fighting the Klingons, Starfleet could have brought the bulk of its strength to bear, possibly supported by a Klingon battle fleet?

Wasn't Martok captured by the Undine?
@neilprice513
@neilprice513 5 жыл бұрын
SPOILERS!! Martok was first captured by the Dominion and replaced by a Founder in DS9, he was saved by Worf, Bashir (who was also captured and replaced) and Garak. Then in STO after he lost a battle with J'Mpok for the Chancellorship and thought dead, he was revived and imprisioned by Torg, the head of a traitorous Klingon House that allied with the Tal'Shiar for personal gain and then the House of Torg kicked out of the Empire for treason. Torg then tried to trade Martok to the Tzenkethi for resources/favours, The Tzenkethi call Martok "The Butcher of Tzenketh 3" due to his victory over them and was saved by your playable character in STO very far into the storyline.

STO changed what many nerd-debaters were thinking about fluidic space. Basically, it is fluid space (not liquid space), a fluid is anything that flows... anything not solid or semi-solid. That is liquid, air, plasma, even singularity sub-atomic space-bending quantum states. The Undine (Species 8472) "fluidic space" may just be an entire universe inside a super-huge black hole in our universe that is tethered to other realities' version of that same black hole. To get to it... to get to it anywhere... opening up a special singularity must happen to convert our reality vessels and beings to survive there. That backfires. It creates a way for their fluidic being way of existing to translate to our space. Because of the Borg incursion into their space, they can spawn singularities into our space anywhere in our universe. They once existed, like all that exists in their universe, at the apex of what it will ever be. It was a static existence of nothing but the strongest existing in forced harmony. The Borg's invasion drew attention to a new struggle and spawned a gateway to it. STO changed that. The fluidic space thing became an undersea thing in space. Totally cool and interesting, but it is a far cry from the nerd banter that would actually involve the fictional universe imaginations of the worlds' greatest minds. That was actually a smart decision. Most people would lose interest in an online game that involved any compressed accelerated space that could be called "fluidic".
@CertifiablyIngame
@CertifiablyIngame 5 жыл бұрын
Yes but... Can I drink it? In honesty though, I always considered fluidic space to be a very "small" universe where much of the matter was compressed together, perhaps some force stopped it from ever expanding big-bang style. Any life that existed there would have to be so different from us to survive a realm where physics were so "different".
@That80sGuy1972
@That80sGuy1972 5 жыл бұрын
@@CertifiablyIngame You seem like you were part of those discussion groups, yes. It's super-compressed space akin to our universe pre-big-bang. Some of us saw the Borg going into that space as a way to improve their trans-warp technology. The space is so compressed that in order to survive there, the ship must alter itself to survive going through the singularity compression (transforming into super-tiny matter without losing structural integrity). That also provided a way "out", where (since it is quantum travel) a singularity into that tiny universe can be opened from "inside fluidic space" and into our universe were Undine vessels and beings will rapidly expand into matter, machines and beings compatible with this space. Since this space is not fluidic, they would be more solid, and not need nearly as much of their power keeping form... making everything about them far more powerful. That would explain their psychic and shape-shifting abilities as well in addition to why "grown" technology works for them. STO derailed the conversation by making fluidic space "undersea space" in the game. I'm not really complaining, it just killed the mystery and lovely nerd discussions that even theoretical physics fans were weighing in on. It was also a great way to make Undine "solid" enough for gameplay.

But I'd definitely see the Gorn being more attracted to something like MMA or grappling rather than baseball. Or maybe it's just about dabbing on the humies, basically like space olympics, the countries than win more get more bragging rights?

anlumo1 oh yes, absolutely. I don't think it's necessarily impossible for an extremely talented heavyweight human to win against a Gorn in a fight. Something akin to Noguera vs Sapp, even better for the human if they're roided up the ass like prime Übereem. But that's basically a million to one, possible but not probable.
