@@becca1189 Disagree. He didn't manipulate anyone. There arent any red flags. If you don't want to have casual sex, then you don't. If you want a relationship, then you date people who are seeking the same. But I do 100% agree that red flags are hard to see even with experience. Lol. 20 years of missing them here.

The Parker plotline is SO important. First: At no point did he do anything wrong, legally speaking. We hate him because he's a slimy manipulative douche who knew EXACTLY how to get what he wanted with zero consideration for Buffy's feelings. BUT at no point did he lie or make a single promise. He doesn't OWE her a relationship or commitment. That is a VERY difficult concept for people to wrestle with, imo. Most people choose not to think and JUST to feel. Second: it demonstrates that people are INCREDIBLY bad at telling the difference between romance and manipulation. We can argue it's all fiction and he was set up as the perfect, empathetic and sensitive guy... but that's rather the point. Players are often VERY good at playing the role, bc it is successful and they've had practice. I think a LOT of young women need to learn that lesson, and I'd rather they learned it from media than experience. Harmony is bloody brilliant (Mercedes is ABSOLUTELY fantastic and I really wish she'd had a bigger career. Her comic timing is SO impeccable) and we get more Spike. What's not to love. I'll be intrigued what you make of Anya in the longer term ^^ A great episode in an underrated season :P

OMG I never agree with any Buffy fans in relation to this. Thank you. It's only recently in therapy that I learnt that Parker and guys like him were not at fault. It was me for not assessing right. If I had known this a couple of decades ago, I could have saved myself a lot of heartache by thinking.
@Talisguy2 ай бұрын
He may not have done anything wrong legally speaking, but he's ultimately still a con artist. He repeatedly tells what sounds like a very personal story (whether it's true or not) to make his next one-night stand believe he's sharing intimate details with them. Admittedly, I don't exactly have a ton of experience with casual hookups, but I'm willing to bet that most (sober) ones don't involve sharing stories that personal and painful with people you may never see again. He made no spoken promises, but he's certainly _implying_ something very different to what he's actually going to give them and he's fully aware of this. Also, being cautious in situations like this isn't bad advice, but Buffy is an eighteen year old with an extremely unconventional relationship history and very limited sexual experience, and Parker is an experienced manipulator who's clearly been doing this for a while. I don't think we can blame her for getting fooled here.
@keshaponso20342 ай бұрын
@@Talisguy Lol You don't have a lot of experience in one night stands, yet you make so many assumptions about sober people hooking up?! It doesn't make him a con artist. He's just a player. He played his lines, and they worked. He did nothing wrong, but consentually engage in a casual date. It's 25 years later, and you still want to blame Parker for Buffy being inexperienced, naive and previously abused. Your definition of "sharing personal info" is ridiculous and based on basically nothing. From my own personal experience I know that's false. We CAN blame Buffy for being fooled because SHE WAS a fool. It's a huge stretch to say that him talking about his dad was some sort of contract that he was interested in a relationship. Buffy made assumptions.
@Talisguy2 ай бұрын
@@keshaponso2034 I'd call him a player if he was upfront (or at least not intentionally deceptive) about what he was offering. There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting casual sex. If everyone knows what they're signing up for, hey, go nuts. But the way he tells what initially seem like very personal stories to Buffy and the other girls, avoids being clear about exactly what he's offering and tries to make Buffy's confusion about the situation entirely her fault makes this an intentional deception. That's why I call him a con man. If he'd been offering a casual fling and Buffy misread the situation, that'd be one thing, but he's intentionally selling them something he's not actually going to give them.
@keshaponso20342 ай бұрын
@@Talisguy He was upfront!! He wanted to 'sieze the moment'. 'He wanted to have a good time'. 'He wanted to take risks'- All his body languange and words implied he wanted sex. What about any of his actions made you think he was interested in more than Buffy's body? Philisophical personal conversations are the most common amongst my ONS and Casual realtionships in the past. Maybe as a local coloquism where you are, but generally even prositutes have a proportion of clients who talk for most of the time. Anonymous sex is not equivalent to consetning casual relationships. Did Buffy make her inention to be exclusive known? Not at all. I think you think there may be a default where people have sex to date to become exlusive- and having a one night stand is the rare occurance. Or the assumption that if you have a good in-depth philisophical conversations, then there is an implied commitment. Buffy and you have 100% misread the situation, over him talking about his family? That's like saying if a girl wears a short dress, she wants sex. I hope you see the point I'm trying to make. He didn't make any deception, nor is he obliged to state his intentions when Buffy hasn't asked nor stated hers. Buffy consented to a sexual encounter. The fault is 100% on her. She signed up for a casual sexual encounter, but she and us the audience was hoping for me.

Buffy's backstory with Angelus does make me stop and wonder why Buffy expected Parker to call. In _Innocence,_ she heard Angelus callollously say, "I'll call you." On top of that, during this time, both in pop culture and real life (I don't know about know), it was so ingrained with people that it meant you wouldn't call. If a person said it and meant (in such the cliche way Parker did), they'd have to really add on that they truly would. The writer of this episode said there was a cut line of Buffy's, at the end, when she was talking to Willow, with Buffy saying that sleeping with Parker was all about trying to get over Angel. She said cutting the line made Buffy a little too naive about the situation with Parker. Sadly, said naivitivity does show more without the cut line. Parker is a douche-bag, but I do wish that line would have been in there so many fans wouldn't be yelling at the screen when Buffy goes into her "Why doesn't he want me" phase of it. The answer is because she doesn't want to deal with Angel issues, not because she actually became that interested in Parker since first meeting him.

he Harsh Light Of Day was an interesting episode in that we still see Buffy's innocence regarding men. It is interesting see a lot of reactors saying how much they liked Parker, even though he seemed totally too sweet and smarmy from the start. The Spike Harmony relationship shows how coercive and manipulative it can be by one partner over another. The Anya Xander one is also most interesting as it is Anya who is almost coercing Xander into a relationship where he is clearly still very innocent and is not particularly wanting it. Spike being reintroduced is great for the show as he is without doubt one of the best characters in The Buffyverse. The credits are somewhat of a spoiler for reactors but it is impossible avoid them as they run as the episode is being shown. It's a shame they can't run them after a major character is in the episode. This of course is a lead into the Angel episode In The Dark with the Gem of Amara.
