This episode was written with the aliens in mind as being lizards.

2:30 The TNG theme is a faster arrangement of Jerry Goldsmith’s theme from The Motion Picture. I know that it's been 2 months since you saw that movie, but I'm slightly surprised that you haven't noticed & that no one else has pointed it out to you.

That poor spectator. Dr. Crusher could have saved him but it would have ruined the ruse.

I see other comments informing you of the problematic nature of this episode. Honestly, with the poor start of some of these first season episodes, it's a wonder that it was allowed to hang on long enough to find its stride. After Riker goes through puberty things are pretty solid.

Great reaction! This is one of my favourite five of the season. A lot of people aren't keen on this one. but i love it.

Another enjoyable reaction! Watching your reactions to this show really reminds me of how much I also enjoyed this during my childhood. I remember what it was like seeing this episode and gleefully reacting to all of the thrills and excitement. I, too, had a crush on Lt. Yar back then (in fact when the TNG action figures came out, hers was the first one I got)! And I also quite enjoyed Wesley--for me, it was exciting to see somebody on the show close to my age and seeing some episodes based on his perspective, too!

Apparently, these aliens were not specifically stated to be African tribal stereotypes (or of any particular race) in the actual script, but the director (who never worked again on the show, no need to guess why) made them that way. An almost universally hated episode, though it has some camp appeal. Glad you liked it though. This is also the only episode scored by Fred Steiner, who also scored lots of TOS episodes. It was intended that he, Ron Jones, and Dennis McCarthy would alternate between the scoring duties, but Steiner got dropped after this episode, so for a few years from here on out, McCarthy and Jones would each score an episode after the other, with only rare exceptions to that pattern.

I don't hate it but yeah the choices are sort of icky.

Very true but it is part of star trek canon. I don’t think seem this episode in 25 years but it is still part of the whole story. History may not be pretty but we can’t ignore it. I say we make sure to raise these questions but also look at the story itself in terms of in universe thinking. I know it is hard but it is necessary Remeber this story was pivotal to Tasha’s story so ignoring it also screws those who were Involved by proximity only

Arguably the worst episode of TV ever made, not just Star Trek, in light of how TNG eventually became one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

Glad you mentioned that. The actual plot points in the episode are not racist.

The thing to keep in mind about doing Star Trek reactions is that most of your viewers love this series. We grew up watching it. We'll be the first to admit it's not perfect and can be a little corny. And not one of us loves every episode. But we clicked on your link in the hopes you, a young person, would help us relive how we felt the first time we saw it. And so we are quickly turned off by disinterest and flippant comments. Good luck.

Great Reaction yeah it’s a fun episode but most people think it’s a racist sexist they complain about it. I understand that but they’re just trying to have some fun with different cultures. You were asking about opening the ships in the original series the opening that is the animated series, Star Trek animated series,1973 and 74 two season last two years of the five year mission original series lasted three years and the series lasted two years but some people don’t count in series this cartoon number believe me it’s not a cartoon. It’s just animated voices the original series any other episode it’s just animated And half episode of our episodes it’s the original series generation been off of that other spin off generation but they have their own things. deep space nine is about a space station Star Trek Voyager lost galaxy a different ship altogether less of the galaxy Star Trek enterprise is a prequel, but what happened before the enterprise just after the Vulcans and lose themselves to earth, so we know not alone in the universe in the future strange new worlds, which is based on the original pilot of the Star Trek regal series Picard tells what happened to the next generation after the crew of the generation after the show years later it’s really good the original series, animated series and next generation does that opening thing thanks For the fun until next time

Well this is the low point of TNG for sure!

The kitsch appeal of the episode is almost enough to make me forgive the shameless racial insensitivity on display, but it's still bewildering that a show from this era is unironically falling back on tribal African stereotypes that were more at home in the pulp adventure stories of the 1930s than in the more enlightened late 1980s. I guess I can't complain about the opportunity to let Tasha Yar headline an episode, though.

It is mere groupthink to claim that the first two seasons of the show are bad. Don't succumb to groupthink; it'll spoil the experience. Enjoy each episode as it comes.
@tbirdparis6 күн бұрын
Well I mean, aside from a handful of exceptions they're really not great... the show does improve significantly at a certain point, there's nothing wrong with acknowledging this fact.
@augiegirl15 күн бұрын
@@tbirdparis So, not BAD, just weaker. It could be argued that this is the case on most TV series; it’s just a matter of degree. This is due to writers & actors “getting to know the characters” as time passes.
@chrisnielsen98855 күн бұрын
That’s crap. I came to the opinion that they were shit on my own. And bear in mind that in 1989 there was no internet so it’s not like everyone got on FB and decided collectively they are awful.
@tbirdparis5 күн бұрын
@@augiegirl1 you're absolutely right about TV series often taking a couple of seasons for the writing to settle in and the real strengths of the show to start forming. Indeed, TNG, DS9 and Voyager all had the same issues in their early seasons. However, people are free to interpret this quality gradient however they wish. If for you it's a shift from less good to great episodes, then that's your take and you're entitled to it. Just as others are entitled to see it as a transition from what they consider bad episodes to good ones. Me personally, I have a fondness for almost all the episodes even if I acknowledge that some of them I do think are bad but still get a pass from me because of how much I like this universe as a whole.

Oh boy...it's Star Trek's super-racist episode! Oof. Seasons 1 and 2 of TNG were pretty rough, but this was definitely THE low point for season 1. I don't think anyone on the production set out to make something so insulting and degrading to black people(except maybe the casting director), but it still happened. Star Trek is a huge franchise with hundreds of episodes across many shows, and thankfully, they never made anything quite this bad ever again. But none of that changes the fact that this episode is really terrible, and an embarrassment to Star Trek. Regardless, keep watching! I respect your dedication to watching all of Star Trek! You will experience all the high highs, and the low lows! And I am here for it!
