How to replace a front CV Axle on a Subaru Legacy Outback. This is the same for most early Subaru Legacy, Impreza and Forester Models.
Turbo models, and newer models don't use a roll pin to hold the axle in, they use a spring clip and the axle just pulls out.

Lug nuts are 19mm, axle nut is 32mm

tjsean0308 Your welcome. And although it can be pronounced either way, NAPA auto parts started as The National Automotive Parts Association. So it's an acronym made into a word.

Interestingly my manual says you only need to disconnect the tierod end and the axle should then be able to be removed. Haven't tried it myself as the the spline is frozen in the hub so awaiting a suitable puller to get it out.

What exactly do you mean when you say tap? Are you unscrewing the cv joint slowly from the transmission? Because when you say tap I'm picturing you tapping the end with hammer

Thanks for this video! Dumb question probably, is your car the Outback Legacy 3.0? I have the 3.0 and am wondering if the Napa CV axle will also be ok rather than the $400 Subaru part?

Can’t find a spindle, I’m replacing some parts including strut and axel but need that spindle or the part you got from a junk yard, how would I order something like that? Like spindle housing?

Anybody ever heard of a noticable wheel/tire wobble right after a cv replacement on a Subaru Outback..? It's a 2003 also, and I'm beside myself ~especially for a fairly simple job.

Sounds like it could be the wheel bearing/hub assembly is bad or just loose. Check that the axle nut is properly seated to spec torque (do this with no load on the wheel).

Christopher Johnson The shop said it was an inner tierod issue. I'm going in underneath today and hopefully this gets rid of the whole car shakes.

Multiple problems here. . . Why would you unbolt the strut? I've replaced several CV shafts on Subarus and other vehicles and never needed to do that. separate the lower ball joint instead and you have more than enough room to replace the CV shaft without risking screwing up your alignment. Also, if you put a thin coat of antisieze on the hub where it contacts the brake rotor. I've never needed to use bolts to get the rotor off after doing this. A short bungee cord or a piece of rope or wire is far better for supporting the brake caliper because there is no risk of it getting bumped and falling off. Lastly, you'll sound a lot smarter if you know the terminology when you talk. the part with the 5 lugs that the end of the CV shaft (CV axle) is peeking through is the "hub and bearing assembly". The part that it bolts to, an also bolts to the strut is the steering knuckle. Separating the steering knuckle from the ball joint can be done by removing one nut and bolt, without even risking damage to the ball joint's rubber boot.

Jon from Milwaukee thanks for The positivity. Sounds like you know all there is to know already, so why are you watching this? I've done it both ways, and in my climate I find that disconnecting the ball joint is a PITA because it's usually seized and by the time you get it out it's damaged, so this is how I've done it easiest and most successful. But please link your how to channel so I can criticize your methods on a public forum to make myself feel better.

Sorry, I was snarky and judgemental in how I commented and that wasn't fair. I'm in a foul mood today because the Autozone (when I needed it, NAPA happened to be out of stock) CV shaft I installed in my Forester less than a year ago has failed and I need to replace it at a very inopportune time, but that's not your fault. I also should have given you credit for actually putting up the video and helping share knowledge, something I have not done. I was watching videos like yours to refresh my memory on what all is involved before doing this job because it's been a while since I've done a CV shaft. I was mainly looking for what socket sizes and I would need and similar specifics so that I have everything I need when I start. Yes, the ball joint is frequently a PITA, but my reasoning is that I can replace it myself if I damage it, and they are readily available and far cheaper than paying for an alignment.

Jon from Milwaukee sorry to hear. We all have rough days my friend. Heads up, as long as you mark the camber bolt, return it to the original spot, and don't mess with the tie rod adjustment the alignment has held every time for me. I've had it checked a few times out of curiosity and been successful each time. Thanks for the tips, I'll Definitely keep them in mind.

I understand marking camber bolts (and other adjustment points) to be able to return them to their original "setting". I guess I'm just a bit paranoid about the mark rubbing off before everything is back together. To give credit where due you do give a lot of good, accurate basic information that anyone doing this for the first time would find very helpful. Sorry again that I got on you earlier, it was misdirected frustration.

unbelievable... Subaru owners don't know anything about cars, that's one thing I've discovered coming from a Jeep community. Why don't you take down the misleading and improper replacement method video instead?

Says an inch and a quarter not 3/4 and it would actually 32 millimeter is what you would need to get that off on a Subaru
