That extractor support in the barrel extension was actually in the Sig 516’s as well, at least the gen 2’s had it, and the same with the Sig M400 gen 2’s, they had that very same extractor support as that caracal does and I’m pretty sure that is something that actually goes back to the HK 416 if I’m not mistaken, I know it was so the rifle’s could perform in over the beach conditions without blowing out the upper receiver when coming immediately out of the water, they also had drain holes drilled into the lower receiver extension tube as well, these rifles could actually be fired while submerged underwater and function 100% reliably because of this

Love how you're being honest about the gas, and also providing info about the buffer and spring. It does look a bit overpassed, but coming from LMT's perspective, 2o'clock is completely normal combat gas. LMT recommends H2 and standard spring for their piston options, I would do so if I'm in a very dirty or arctic environment. That being said, an LMT 12" piston with super42 H3 buffer/spring combo shooting mil-ball ammo is extremely smooth. The ejection is consistently just before the angle of the brass deflector. Which is the ideal 4:00 pattern according to Sprinco. The brass glides on the deflector instead of smacking it and bouncing forward. I choose to make it smooth with mil-spec 5.56 ammo, knowing I always have the option to bump it to the N setting for adverse environments or weak ammo when suppressed if needed in the field.

Great video on the PDQ lever I ran a little stiffer spring and mine seems to work great also I thought the additional support to the extractor was a great idea it seems to add a little extra safety to the shooter and I haven't totally decided on which piston upper I am willing to drop a chunk o cash on lol!!!!

The reason why the mags fail to lock the bolt back on the PDQ lever (besides the extra mass of the lever assembly) is because spring tension/gravity from the dust cover push down on the PDQ lever from the right side, so unless the magazine follower has a really stiff spring it can't overcome the extra resistance. I run a PDQ lever lower on a Stag left hand eject upper (I shoot left handed) and it locks back on every single magazine I have tried.

The full rifle I got from Caracal came with a full tungsten buffer. Not sure the H equivalent.

Love the build I did using the upper. Caracal offers a hell of military discount (Looking at closer to 700 for an upper with the discount). I used a spikes tactical 5.4 ounce tungsten buffer with sprinco red spring, recoil is less than most of my DI AR's. 62 grain on the lightest gas setting has comparable recoil to 55 grain in DI guns. Had to use middle gas setting for 77 grain OTM that was about the same recoil from my BCM RECCE 14.

Shout-out to Callaway Ballistics, I love their 300blk...but dang they make such a small amount of that Axe ammo!

You should look into the T 91/Wolf A1 upper receiver. It is a great piston, rifle, upper receiver, but at a better price point than the majority of the others. Also, it is the current Taiwanese fighting rifle that is issued over in Taiwan. I think you might be interested in that one.

Would love to see you review the pof p415. I’ve seen the uppers for about $1250 and think they offer a good value for a piston upper.

I don’t understand why people are still hung up on chrome lining. CHF, yes but all the test have been done. Nitriding literally beats chrome lining in every category except when you get into sustained full auto. In other words, a military application. Even more specific, belt fed. Unless you are doing meltdowns, nitrided barrels are simply better. If you don’t believe me, just do a search here on KZfaq and watch.

What buffer setup would you recommend? I aim to focus on reliability.... then proper gas/ejection, and recoil mitigation using an LPM Anthem-S, as well as unsuppressed. How about the K-Spec A5H4, especially since you encountered over gassing issues with the A5H3? I am also considering the JP SCS, the Gen 4 Armaspec spring, as well as the Kynshot Hydraulic buffer.

I know this stuff is designed by guys smarter than me. I'm not an engineer, but I can't help but feel that piston AR's only continue to exist because so many companies build DI AR's with leaky gas systems; and either so few people realize it or so few actually hold them accountable to it. The only benefit to a piston system in my mind, is that it eliminates multiple locations for gas leakage. While thats cool and all..for the added weight, aggressively early bolt unlock, and more frequent bolt breakage; its not a good trade off. Considering you can build a DI AR to have a very efficient gas system that is not as hard on bolts, extractors, and cam pins - I just don't see a reason to use a piston AR. Not only that but DI suppresses better because of the bolt staying closed longer. Example: A carbine length DI opens later in time than a carbine length piston - this is because the solid piston rod initiates the bolt unlock the moment gas reaches the gas port; contrasted to a DI system which has to send gas down the gas tube first. Rifle length gas system has entered the chat and wants to evangelize you to the world of long bolt/ extractor/cam pin life and pleasant suppressed shooting experiences. Most people don't actually understand how the systems work, and so we get solutions to problems that are more easily fixed in different ways. Or by simply building the damn thing correctly. Also, consider why does PWS and LMT use very short dwell times on most of their piston guns? Or why does LMT have an elongated cam path on their enhanced bolt carriers? Both of these design queues are to attempt to reduce the negative effect of extreme early unlocking created by the piston system inherently. Elongated cam path allows the bolt the stay closed a few milliseconds longer so gas pressure drops in the barrel a bit more before being shoved into your face during extraction (worse the earlier it occurs) and the short dwell time simply buys back more of the time you lost by adding a solid piston so that again the bolt stays closed longer.

Two nitpicks about your description of the nitride finish. First QPQ and Nitride are NOT the same thing, not exactly. QPQ is a form of nitride but it's a very specific process that takes more time, more heat and harsher chemicals. Second is that QPQ, Nitride, and Melonite(Glock's trademark process nitride) are all limited to the blackened finish when it comes to corrosion resistance, lubricity, and hardness. The benefit of any kind of nitride finish is strictly skin deep. I have a hard time taking anything any company says seriously after they tell me there's no difference in longevity between a CHF and non-CHF barrel, you can't cheat physics. You may not be willing to say it but I will, They are fucking LIARS.

Basically, the 516 and 816 are “improved” 416s with a few mostly irrelevant modifications and a lot of cost cutting mods and cheesy patent workarounds.

I've been hearing a lot of shit talk about CHF barrels lately. Q talks down on CHF but everyone knows the owner, Kevin I think his name is, is a dick. Dude is very childish. I've seen multiple times where he argues in xomment sections, very child like I should add, with ANYONE who says his rifles are too expensive and that they're not tough. Dude doesn't take criticism well. He typically brings up money or some other way to question if your a "man" or not. But I will say I'm sure not all CHF barrels are created equal. I do see $100-120 CHF from like BCA that make me wonder. Sounds too good to be true

Dude, I don't think they're alone in saying there's not much longevity difference between nitride/phosphate 4150 barrel and a CHF chrome lined barrel. VSO channel says the same. And I know I've heard that at least 1 other time. If I remember correctly, his opinion boiled down to a typical civilian firing schedule, and the fact that he believes most, if not all, civilians will never shoot enough to really notice a difference. I want to say the video is called "chrome lined barrels are stupid" and he shows the minimal wear difference from one to the other over like a yr of him shooting.
