I had a friend , she is the only daughter with 7 brothers. After school, she literally became a maid in her own home, doing laundry, cooking, cleaning.. the parents should get all the children to do chores and not rely on her just because she's a girl.

I’m the oldest girl with 2 younger brothers and a little sister. I always had to do cleaning chores, cooking, laundry and take care of the younger ones. When I’d notice my brothers playing, watching tv, relaxing, I’d ask mom and dad why they didn’t help with chores. My parents would respond because they’re boys. Well what about my sister ? She’s too little they’d tell me. 😑

No woman should be subjected to pregnancy after pregnancy, infant after infant they can not afford to feed. @chronic_payne5669, I can’t imagine a young girl whose days were filled with caring for 5 younger siblings, starting at about the age of 11-13 as her days, and nights too with so many newborns, were centered upon the being the SOLE caretaker of ALL of them!!! She must have been exhausted, frustrated, overwhelmed and to the point of never seeing the end in sight as her parents KEPT reproducing!!!! Why did they not use SOME protection like condoms?? And how could you possibly bring MORE children into your home when we don’t have enough food, shelter or clothing??? It was a tragedy all at the hands of the purely selfishness of the parents!!! They sentenced poor Piedad to a life with no hope, no childhood, no education and simply forced to be a parent at that young of an age.

Nah...you can't blame the parents for that. They didn't use birth control, and it was probably against the religion. It was customary to have large families then, and even something religions pushed. The parents had to work, or those kids would not have food. The girl had too much responsibility, and was selfish. Wanted to play with her friends. Parents should have known she was doing it sooner, however.

They live in a small village in the mid sixties. There was no contraception unless you had your tubes tied. If you are of a certain faith it's not allowed. There could have been only a mid wife in the village to help with the birth. If there were complications you might have to be taken several hours away. I’m beginning to believe her mother instigated the plot. It is possible her mother was not only overwhelmed but was suffering some symptoms of post-partum depression. She would not be able to use birth control and most likely could not refuse her husband’s demands. This was the only way she could figure out how to get out from under all this pressure. She pressured her daughter to be her accomplice. Then when they got caught, her daughter was talked into taking all responsibility for it since she would receive a lighter sentence.

The blame falls on the parents. As the adults, it was their responsibility to care for and rear the children. They were the ones constantly having babies at nearly one a year. My aunt Betty was diagnosed as "mildly retarded" in young childhood. She was the second-youngest child my grandmother had, and when my grandfather left over my grandmother having given him "a retarded child and no sons" she had to raise five children on her own, sometimes working two jobs. This task was made all the more difficult by how much care my aunt Betty required, a special school, doctors visits, etc. Betty grew up to marry a strange young man because neither of them were suitable for a better spouse and had to "take what they could get" in each other. They lived a slovenly lifestyle where they always lived far from family because they didn't have want to have to clean their homes, bodies, or act "normal". Betty never wanted kids, but her husband talked her into it and they physically neglected, physically and emotionally abused them. It turned out later that they had been sexually abused as well by their dad and by male cousins and even strangers. The thing is, my oldest aunt.... ten years older than Betty and only a half-sister, confessed that her own battles with alcohol, running away, prostitution, abusive relationships, and abuse of her own children...were brought on by lifelong GUILT. What did she do to make her feel so guilty? When she was 10, my grandmother had her caring for her three younger sisters - including newborn Betty...while she worked. The little girl was so overwhelmed by the new babies' neediness and crying, that she would hold her hand over the Betty's nose and mouth till she "turned blue"....then would do it again every time she cried too loud or too long. Causing brain damage. Betty was NOT born "retarded". She was a normal healthy baby who'd been oxygen deprived too many times, and it caused brain damage. Both of my aunts' lives were ruined by it all. Plus my mom and my other aunt had always resented their sister Betty for taking so much attention and care away from THEM with her "special needs". It was a huge mess that spanned generations. And all because for a few months, a little girl had been given responsibilities and burdens she shouldn't have had.

I am from a family of 8 children and our life was not easy. Couples have known since the beginning of time what causes pregnancy, if they can't afford the means of protection (nowadays it's free)....then stop doing what causes it. Abstinence is free.

This is an unbelievably tragic case. Piedad wasn’t much older than me. It seems that sometimes circumstances whip up “a perfect storm” in some people’s lives and produce total tragedy. It seems her brothers were somewhat jealous but also threatened by Piedad’s notoriety and it influenced their decisions as they grew up. Some viewers have blamed the parents, others the child but I am sure it’s more complex than much people can understand. I can’t call this one and I am grateful that I don’t have to.

¡Ay, pobre Piedad, pobre niños! What a sad story. The parents put far too much responsibility on this young girl. The father was the only person who could control the number of children (no birth control in Franco Spain), but he just kept making babies they could not afford.

Stealing a person's childhood can have irreparable emotional damage to the child into adulthood. Of course, it usually doesn't result in murder but it happens more than it should. This little girl was a child and she didn't have the maturity level to be in charge of so many children. Good grief. This is why birth control is important. They could have found a way to prevent more children. The church doesn't need to know anyone's private life. RIP little ones. 😢💔🕊️

I never understood why parents who can barely financially support themselves and the kids they already have, continue to procreate. The blame falls solely on Piedad's selfish parents here.

I think the blame falls on the church here, it banned contraception, told women to submit to their husbands, and told husbands to procreate. Large families were the norm as was expecting the oldest child to look after the younger ones, and the younger ones were expected to go out to work at age 13 /14 to help bring more money into the house.

I had a very good friend, an English woman, who did a lot of work in Northern Ireland after the "troubles", with at-risk girls and young (married) mothers. Because of the Church's teachings, they literally did not realise the link between sex and babies. They would come to her, married women all, sometimes in their 30s!, asking what they could do to stop having babies. No-one--not schools, not their mothers, not society, not the churches--had taught them that having sex could give them children. This was in the 1990s, for pity's sake. These parents were not being selfish; they were living their lives like everyone around them were. It's easy for us to cry "selfish!" and today, maybe that would be the case. You look young enough not to remember the absolute furore the invention of The Pill caused, internationally, especially in Catholic countries--even moreso in _Fascist_ Catholic countries, such as Spain (this was also a little before my time, and you look substantially younger than I am). In order to understand, you need to know the context. Otherwise, it is every easy to proclaim blame on individuals when the problem was, in fact, systemic. The systemic downtread of women as no more than breeding farms is so very, very recent, and the burden this placed on men, too (3 jobs in the one family and they still couldn't eat? I mean, Spain had some _issues_ with fair wages, right?) and it's so easy for it to happen again. Just look at the USA.

Too bad what became of Piedad was obscured and we don't know what became of her. It would have been interesting to know. It was also sad that this family went through so much. This is when birth control is very important as if there were not so many children that kept coming the older boys could have finished school and maybe go on to better lives. And Piedad would not have done what she did. It was too overwhelming for a 12 year old to look after 5 or 6 little kids and babies. Plus clean the house and prepare dinner and work part time. Piedad was still a child herself and the burdens place on her was just too much.

Good morning! This is one of the most heartbreaking stories I’ve ever heard. I can’t even imagine being a young child having to take care of my younger siblings. That doesn’t excuse her behavior. Putting pressure on her to almost become a young mother and left alone with practically babies by herself was unfair. I understand that the parents had to work but why rely on a child? I kept thinking maybe they couldn’t afford to have someone take care of the children but still have such a young girl put in that position wasn’t right. Plus the mother who is expecting another child when she was arrested? This was such a tragic story no matter how you look at it. Have a wonderful week and looking forward to next Monday🇬🇧🇵🇭 Bless 🙏🏽

I don't know how to feel about this one, part of me feels like she genuinely could have been a scapegoat. The reporter decided that she might have been guilty because of her "demeanor" and because she wouldn't knowingly drink poison? She was an older child who had a job,you don't have to be a genius to know what you probably shouldn't eat? She might have changed her story for her mother to not be involved because then all of the kids would end up not having a mother which at that time would have ment being sent to an orphanage and separated. Honestly I'm just glad that she seems to have been treated well afterwards and that she enjoyed herself at the monastery, she got to have a bit of normalcy and childhood.

E.g. my mum's dad got his first job at 7 years of age, so sure, things was very different not many generations ago, even here in the Western world. But perhaps it's actually surprising more kids didn't reach their breaking point like Piedad. 12 years old, already responsible for 4 small kids, her mother pregnant with a 5th sibling for her to take care of, and presumably, her parents could've produced even more siblings the following next couple of years... My mum's dad did have to work hard already during his childhood, but at least his parents didn't keep piling more work on him.

@@adristrydom5154 although your reply is true, that's kind of my point. Nowadays we're horrified by the responsibilities placed on children back then. And to put our standard of living or viewpoint on ppl of that time seems a bit unfair. ✌️

As always, you pack so much information and history into your "brief cases". Well done. A familiar story of hardship and poverty in difficult times, and while this young girl was understandably frustrated at her responsibilities, it was typical for older children to help in large families. I think she had some kind of underlying mental health issue to have been so cruel and clearly without remorse. This was a family with more than their share of heartache.
