i'm really surprised that you didn't talk about fairy foxes, it's an indie animated series on youtube that's been in production since 2008. it's almost entirely produced by one artist, with help from voice actors and music.

As a 15 year old teen making his own cartoon, this video is just giving me more motivation. I'm Happy indie cartoons are getting more recognition. I'm looking forward to these projects. EDIT - After making this comment and after a few months of working more on my cartoon, we've finally finished it! The second episode is going to be premiering on my channel as I'm writing this. Thanks for the support in the replies, I really appreciate it!!

These self-made stories and animations are so inspiring, and they're always got this creative spin. Lackadaisy being the most recent I watched, had me yearning for more. The characters alone in some of these shows in indie are a breath of fresh air or even a new version of something we've seen. It's just really nice to see the support now as well. I mean, Helluva boss has no doubt gained a pretty consistent fan base that is willing to wait a month or 2 for the next episode. Obviously, it's not an easy path at all, but it's still great to see it's possible, but ya gotta stick to it.

Oooo I’ve been waiting for a video like this from you, because honestly the animations being posted to YT these days are so slay So wow I cannot even express it, but it’s really how just how artists and animators are like “you know what, we’ll do it ourselves” and take it upon themselves to supply the animated shows and stuff that we’ve been craving in the creative industry. And their work is PAYING OFF because this is exactly what everyone has been waiting for and wanting, and big time animation studios need to be taking notes. Because THIS is what we’ve been really wanting.

I also want to state that Lackadaisy really got me excited and it’s a big inspirational drive for me cause well 1.) I like cats And 2.) I’m working on a series of old times animations, granted most of the designs are modern-ish, but it has the same time-frame and styles that are used in Lackadaisy, it feels like I finally got some new inspiration outside of the hundreds of Betty Boop re-runs (which my animation is mostly modeled after-) This has been a longtime project for me since I didn’t have the equipment, materials, or time to work on it when I wanted to and now I can even though it’s years past my initial start date. Anyways- rant aside I guess, I’m just really excited for Lackadaisy content it truly feels so magical and it just makes every part of my creative sense happy, it really has everything that I adore in media/animation.

I've been working on an original animated pilot for almost 2 years and it should be done before the end of this year. While working on it, the perceived value of animation and the industry has changed wildly. From 'animation is the future' to 'cut everything.' I'm so happy to see the independent scene grow and be viable.

Seeing indie projects become so popular and successful has motivated me to write my 2 shows which i want to make, some short films and has even motivated me to start learning animation. What a time to be alive! It's amazing seeing talented people creating things outside the studio system. Well, i kinda have lost my trust for phoenix studio, there's been a lot of talking lately... But nothing good recently. Have you seen the trailer for cool series "No way back" on their channel? You can watch the actual episode on their original russian channel and... It's the opposite of cool in every aspect. And all the director of the studio were doing on the second video channel is riding tours and talking about their progress about the projects... There's too many of them. Russian fan (tbh it's not fan anymore right now) community now have jokes like "phoenix studio is now yandere simulator studio" and "Fedor (the studio director) loves making schemes of progress more than making his projects". My student spirit is the only one good project for my opinion, and i think that's because of Lina, the author of the series. And did i mentioned they did ANIMATION MEMES while calling themselves a studio? Whew, i made a long roast here

@@avalell I'd say that Phoenix Animation has some good projects out there. First episode of Sharik and Shurik was fun. I watched audiobook of their comic Land of Kings and it was great. It'd be awsome to see it animated. They have some winning formulas they just focus on everything at once. Another problem is they live in ivory tower when it'd be good to see how things look before they start animating. And No Back and trailer for Children of Aiy is a proof for that. Children of Aiy seems fine (not that I read comic) but it didn't gain popularity due to it being overly melodramatic. Spirit is the most down to earth of projects and it mixes sad and happy moments very well. That's why it works. It shows a piece of Russian reality and for it people like it despite some plot holes and mistakes in animation.

I am all in for the rise of indie animation! Seeing animators worldwide not from a major studio being able to create their very own stories to share with others is simply incredible. As an animator who has a web series as well, I want to share that it is an overall incredible and rewarding experience overall. Does it take a lot of work? Of course, but the satisfaction bringing your own creations to life and giving a voice to yourself while being your own boss is satisfying. Hope we continue to see more inspiring animators go for their dreams and create animated shorts and web series of their own.

I think I’ve commented this before but I just want to say that the animation industry reminds me a lot of the music industry in many ways, but the one I wanted to point out was that indie/experimental music and animation are very similar in a way, mainly bc both normally tackle subjects that in a “mainstream” setting just dont work or the higher ups refuse to try them out, so this creators post their ideas to the internet and (sometimes) they get enough success to make a sustainable living doing what they want. Idk I just think is cool :p

It's actually a thing in all industries - The major industry is pretty much so stale that AI can fully replace it, and no one will bet an eye! The indie scene, in all fields, is where the magic happens - no formulas, no charts, no profit hungry investors... Just creators improvising, having fun, learning and growing with those that find them interesting!

YES !! THIS VIDEO! THESE PROJECTS! HECK YES!!! I'm also someone who grew up on Newgrounds content watching sonic shorts, though it was more into the 2010s as I was born in the mid 2000s. The way in which this art form - and all forms of art, really - has grown just within this past decade alone is certainly incredible! I haven't animated since I was in Elementary school, and looking at what's being produced now makes me wish I had the money to get back into it properly. I'm someone whose putting together their own indie animated project, and has been since the start of 2021 (which I actually wasn't aware of, looking back at it). The massive growth of indie animation even between now and then has expanded, and it's kind of overwhelming, as I'm working on this all on my own. It doesn't help that I have SAD, as it makes being and interacting on the internet just as if not more stressful than doing so in real life (not to mention that I forget social media exists sometimes), so I haven't been sharing it at all, really. Plus, I'm entering my late teens. Who wants to work with a teenager with no experience in show running, nor the funds to even get the tools she needs? It's all kinda blummy, but each day I'm encouraging myself to not be discouraged. The first five episodes aren't even written yet! I should utilize this time in my young life to build on what I can with what I have >:) Thx again for posting the video! Loving your content! Can't wait to see where you go from this point ⭐⭐

A few more projects I would like to add: Meta Runner, a 3d animated show created by Glitch Productions (the same guys who made Murder Drones), is about a cyborg girl named Tari who finds herself in a world defined by video games. This one has actually been fully released, but I wanted to put it here anyway cuz I think it's pretty good. Forgotten Bloodlines: Agate is an upcoming documentary created by digital duck. Set in the miocene epoch 20 million years ago, it explores the creatures that time, and man, have forgotten using photo-realistic CGI. I know this one is a little different, but you cant deny the amount of effort and passion that goes into making documentaries (also considering how starved the paleo community is for quality paleo-media, I feel legally obliged to spread the word). It may not actually release on KZfaq, but you never know.

Absolutely incredible video!!! I love indie animation, even though not all of them appeal to me, it makes me so happy seeing people make stuff on their own and getting to create what they're passionate about without worrying about corporations and executive meddling and such! It's really encouraging to see and gives me immense hope for the future! Since my comment on the community post, I finally watched Lackadaisy AND OMG I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! The animation, characters, and visuals are absolutely amazing and the crew did such a wonderful job with it!!! I was aware Lackadaisy was originally a webcomic, but I wasn't aware it started that long ago! I'll have to check it out sometime! One of my fav web cartoons from back in the day is Bee and Puppycat, and I'm so happy it has a Netflix series now! I also started watching Baman Piderman not too long ago, and I've been loving it omg I'm also excited for all of the projects you mentioned you're excited for, especially Lumi and the Great Big Galaxy and Pen Pals Forver, and I'm wishing the absolute best for all those projects and the crews behind them!!! I've always dreamt about making my own cartoon series, ESPEICALLY MAINLY with a specific OC universe I've been developing since I was a tween, and am STILL figuring out to this day. It's not completely done, and I don't exactly have the best attention span when it comes to my OCs (since I tend to draw fanart more often), but I feel like in recent years I have been getting better with that, and even though I do have my struggles here and there, one day I WILL get my big project up off the ground no matter how long it takes!

Then, Helluva Boss happened, and it inspired me to take up a 2D Animation class where I met and befriended a pretty awesome professor. I'm lucky to have run into him in this year's spring semester as well since he will be working full-time at the University of Silicon Valley as its Department Director of Digital Art & Animation once he's finished with the class. A dear friend and I have been working on a project since the summer of 2020. I would rather not talk much about it yet, but while he focuses on the writing, I hope I can bring the moments we have written to life with visual art. I've worked in animation as a writer producer for over a decade and the big corporations both supporting and choking to death the things that made us all want to be in animation in the first place has gotten, oddly enough, both better and worse in precisely the way you describe. I also believe firmly in the notion of "if you want something done, you probably need to do it yourself." tally ho.

Independent animation has become my main source of animated media. A lot of them have a lot of effort and faith put into it. I think the release of independent animated shows like Hazbin Hotel (including its spin-off Helluva Boss), Murder Drones and Lackdaisy, it shows that animation isn't just something that is made by big name studios and aimed solely for children (not to say that children's media is bad, just that animation as a MEDIUM should be for all audiences regardless of age) and shows how animation is a good tool for creators to express their ideas freely. The general rise of more independent animated works gave me inspiration to learn animation and maybe test out frame-by-frame. And a breath of relief from having to watch stuff made by big studios that while good on their own, tend to lack the rich storylines and creativity of independent animation.

Another wonderful video. As for the indie animation. I agree with what you said. Alot of people want something new, there is a market for new and old animators to created their special projects. Not just 2d animation, we are seeing 3d animation on fights or animals. Hopefully we can see a positive push in the corporate side, but I can see things change for the worst. I do agree that you should have something to help you on the Indie games. It's a rabbit hole and a half.

First off, love the change to light hearted content for a while, and Newgrounds are responsible for the creation of the base Friday night funkin which has so many cute mods made from it , also the FNAF movie is coming out soon after so many bluffs , when is the second episode of Lackadaisy coming out? I’m going to watch the pilot episode at some point

Haha, the next installation of Lackadaisy probably won't be for some time; pilots are half showcasing the general vibe of a potential show & half figuring out what works animation wise, so there's probably some discussion going on there before anything else gets made

Ever since I was in high-school, ive always wanted to work for Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks as a storyboard artist or a character designer. Due to circumstances that prevented me from doing so, I didnt accomplish that dream. Now that i know that the mainstream animation industry has fucked over so many creative minds in today's entertainment landscape, I have little to no faith. Since the writer's strike has happened for months, all the big wigs in big animation companies such as Disney care about how much money movie will make and not the creative vision of the many animators that have worked on their projects only for them to be laid off and paid very little for their work. Seeing indie animation flourish gives me hope that perhaps i can pick up the many ideas i had in the past and hopefully someday ill be able to get my own animated project off the cutting room floor and take off. Thank you for covering this :3

I’m gonna be honest. I want to make something meaningful, something that I love and can share with others. But I don’t know if I want to waste my life just trying to get better at even drawing. My biggest fear is wasting time and feeling like a waste of time but at the same time I want to try. There seems to be a lot of creative people out there and seeing all of them is sort of pulling me in 2 different directions. There’s a lot to consider.

I'm all for it. Seeing animators free to just do whatever the hell they want and pursue their vision as they see fit has proven its success. Some of them may come off as a bit amateur or outlandish, sure. But there's clearly passion behind it, something increasingly rare in old media where it's only about the bottom line. Whenever soulless corporations get their fat filthy hands on a series, they try to mold it into a bloated cash cow completely divorced from its original vision and instead something that simply gets the attention of the greatest number of _general audiences_ while impressing no one. Companies just don't see the profit in taking any risks anymore, they just wanna make the most money with mass-producing the cheapest and "safest" brain-rotting normie entertainment in a factory of wage slave artists getting the breadcrumbs. The future of animation is online, independent artists making their own animations/stories on their own terms and being properly compensated for it.

It’s a bit late right now for me, but the nanosecond I wake up tomorrow I’M WATCHING THIS START TO FINISH BECAUSE THIS VIDEO RIGHT HERE IS EVERYTHING I STAND FOR AND AM PURSUING PERSONALLY ALREADY! INDIE ANIMATION IS MY PASSION (And while the most I’ve ever made is a few original Music vids to favorite songs, both covers and the OG songs, I’m not kidding when I say I’m (carefully) diving head first into the Indie Animation scene and I’m eagerly hyped for shows like Glitch’s Drones series, Lackadaisy, Defenders of Alodia, BOXTOWN, and so many more!!!! I’m so stoked for indie animation!!!

Thank you so so so much for covering indie animation!!! As I’ve said, I’m over the moon for indie animation, and I’m already watching a bunch of awesome creator driven projects, and even joined a discord server or two to help show support to various teams and creators! Vivzie’s two shows certainly are true game changers, and though they are a bit too “TV-MA” for my liking… (or I guess, YT-MA? eh?😂) I’m absolutely proud of her and her team for showing the industry that animation IS AN ART FORM WORTHY OF PRAISE among other great things! And thankfully, there’s more and more shows, both old, new, finished, ongoing, and everything in between to enjoy! Lackadaisy, M***er Drones, BOXTOWN, Lumi and the Great Big Galaxy, Nori and Zin (created by SharpyTown) and finished projects such as CatGhost, and Interface (by Umami) are just a few that I’m excited for/love already!!! As for me personally, as I mentioned, I’m carefully diving into the indie animation scene! I’m gonna be uploading mainly to Newgrounds, because of…well…it’s Newgrounds!🤩👍 Currently, I’m focusing on just two projects at a time! One project is a stop-motion compilation of one of my Bumblebee transformer toys, which I’m almost halfway done with! The second project…is honestly a bit more…intense for me, but still exciting! It’s gonna be an experimental semi-psychological-horror mixed media short film (think Amazing World of Gumball and/or the Rescue Rangers movie on Disney+, but if they were directed by Wes Craven of Nightmare on Elm Street, Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, Scott Cawthon of FNAF, etc….at least that’s my current working visual concept.) Also, the Welcome Home ARG is a HUGE INSPIRATION for me! (I’m praying for Clown Coffin 💖 hope their doing alright!) That whole project is honestly brilliant! Not just as a story, but as marketing as well, intentional or not! In fact, it’s even cooler that the prologue doubles as marketing as well!!!! And I’m more than willing to wait for a new chapter or update or whatever! I’m absolutely taking notes on this for my own projects as well by the way!!! Thank you so so much again for making this video!!! Let’s make the 2020s the decade of indie animation…heck, why not indie EVERYTHING!!! (Ok, that might be a little much. Maybe MOSTLY or HALF indie everything!)

A show i'd really love you to check out is Camp Camp! it's a lot better and more mature than other adult cartoons. It isn't afraid to be crass or out there but there's a certain amount of restraint they have. It never goes too far. That, and it makes time to actually have some genuine heart. Season 1 is like season 1 of Steven Universe in a sense that theirs bits of story that becomes more and more apparent as the series progresses, its story, characters and hidden lore so so interesting and it’s filled with mystery, epic story arks and emotional moments that I’d seriously call it one of the best animated shows ever made, too bad it’s criminally underrated, not many people are all that aware of it, despite is having a fandom that adores it.

I should point out that I think another factor playing into companies is simply that failing is becoming less and less of an option as the situation economically becomes precarious. I looked into the balance sheets shown on Yahoo! Finance for a lot of these companies (LionsGate, Comcast, Paramount, Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Netflix) and what I see is a very precarious situation where a lot of the parent companies have debt multiples of what they can make in profit, if they can break even at all. If the film/animation division becomes a massive underperformer and a liability for the parent company for conglomerates, or the company starts to become unprofitable for these all-in-animation/film companies, odds are that they'll be left out to die, leaving a lot of employees in every level in a precarious situation and with a lot of stakeholders, both fans and shareholders, holding out pitchforks against them. A lot of people have been leaning back onto previously known IPs because it's safer and a lot of people already like these IPs regardless of our complaints. I feel that the cost of a movie failing when budgets are this high from a mix of celebrity actors, employees being paid a wage in most cases and the cost of professional-quality/in-house software development/acquisition pretty much make the cost skyrocket into an unsustainable level. What I feel the next step is for a lot of these companies to end up going bust and their employees forming new, fresh companies with new ideas. Also, thank Disney for the 95-year life of copyright. Under the original law, most of the IPs that are being recycled nowadays would be in the public domain, since they're mostly over 14 years old either entirely or partially.

I'm doing an audio project (I'm a writer, not an animator) and it actually got way harder when I got a few friends on board. I had initially recorded episode one in maybe an hour (after, of course, all the writing and editing). Then I got a couple friends on deck as voice actors and we have been working for months on what took me less than an hour initially. Partly because it's difficult to coordinate, partly because the primary voice actress is young and she's having trouble, partly because we've been sick, and partly just... its way harder now for some reason. I don't know if I wish I had launched it myself or not, but it is definitely more difficult now than it was. Maybe it's different for animation, but just a warning, it might be easier to do it yourself on your own schedule. Though I will say I do have some executive functioning differences, so it's difficult to do stuff when I'm not motivated to do it or in a routine to do it, so maybe it would be different if I were neurotypical. I think maybe if I were neurotypical it would be easier to do the collab stuff but harder to do the writing? I'm not really sure. When I write, it's on my schedule and I'm really into it, so it's better and easier. I'm not really sure though, I am what I am and I like it, if you're different, I'm not positive how your experience would be different.

Thank you for this video. It makes me optimistic for the future of animation! So many amazing shows have come out over the past decade, it’s such a shame that now the industry only cares about their guaranteed money makers. I am surprised that you didn’t mention Cartoon Hangover. In the 2010s, they were pretty big pioneers of indie shows on youtube. (The biggest ones being Bee and Puppycat and Bravest Warriors.) At the time, I remember similar conversations going around in how paramount platforms like youtube were to the rise and exposure in indie animations as it allowed artists to have the creative freedom denied by the big studios.

I really enjoyed watching this video. A great snapshot of the current events as well as a bit of brief history of indie animation. Most of the stuff I enjoy watching right now are Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and recently Lackadaisy. I have heard of Murder Drones, but haven’t seen it yet to give my honest opinion. Another project that I have seen at least one season of is “Meta Runner”. I’m not an animator, but am an aficionado/cone suer of animation ( Cartoons, Anime, etc). Got my BFA in Graphic Design but unfortunately wasn’t able to get a foot in the door so I’ve relegated my art as a hobby as opposed to a full-time career. Much happier and not under so much stress on wether or not my ideas become viral sensations. For years I have been working on something of a passion project that’s got multiple parts and pieces that need to be finalized etc but due to current work schedule have been tabled or put on hiatus until finding the time to work on them. Not sure what I want to do with it but whatever happens I hope people will enjoy it. Really enjoying the art you make in the background of your videos. The one you made for this video is well done and very topical since it relates to Lackadaisy. Is that your own OC if they were part of the world of Lackadaisy? If so good job. Think the worst part of finishing school in 08 aside from the crash was that we've learned most 2D animation is outsourced overseas since the 80s and our animated programs we grew up with were made to sell toys and merch. Wish I did my own research and saved me years of student debt. You might be able to eek something in 3D though working in the gaming industry can be a fate worse than death. And if you drew like anime (like the not lewd kind), or the infamous/popular "bean mouth" style, you were never going to get work. That was back then. Glad the pandemic gave 2D a bit of a renaissance for a while, sadly it doesn't feel like our culture really nurtures creativity unless it can get monetized to hell and back. EDIT: Also, YES! The whole industry playing it safe with reboots, remakes, rehash of IPs. The 80s and early 90s we had so much variety in shows, yet now? The only variety we get now are how many ways we can draw Spiderman. Even TMNT, a once indie hit now has a reboot every few years. Hell, I'll take a Law and Order animated spinoff at this point. Also, what art program are you using in the video? I'm using GIMP for most of the drawing, color, shadows, etc and Blender for lineart overlays.
