The original 1982 version of the video for "Red Skies" by The Fixx from their first CD "Shuttered Room". The video aired for 11 weeks on MTV ultimately reaching heavy rotation. The single peaked at #101 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart (bubbling under). I do not own copyright to the video or the audio.

I believe this could be a performance done on a show similar to "Top of the Pops", where bands would mime their songs in front of an audience. On some occasions, the vocal track was stripped and the singer would be the only one performing it live. If you notice what Cy does at the bridge, it seems to make sense. The music, however, sounds exactly like the recording. I've always loved the tone JWO got out of his guitar, which I believe is a rodded up strat copy (forgot the brand).

And Jamie West-Oram definitely does not suck on guitars. He's the other cool New Wave guitarist from the 80s, besides U2's The Edge, that played shattering icicles guitar. And the original bassist, Charlie Barrett, was great too, though he bailed after Shuttered Room, sadly. The guy that replaced him? With the beard? Dan K. Brown? A bit less interesting, to me, although he stayed with The Fixx a bit longer, ultimately. Alfie Agius was also good on bass, but he too left shortly after joining the band. He did the Shuttered Room tour, recorded 4 songs on the album Reach the Beach, including the hits *Saved By Zero* and *One Thing Leads to Another.*

However...unlike 'Top of the Pops' & most TV shows of the day, this 'performance' is Cy actually singing live over a pre-recorded backing track. The backing track is actually the original studio recording from the Fixx album called "Shuttered Room". From 78-82 was stationed at Hahn AB Germany. We would regularly don our NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) suits, put on our gas masks, and practice getting our jets up before Ivan's nukes smelted us into a glowing, glassy slag pile. Fortunately, the Federal Republic of Germany was a great place to be assigned. Took the edge off a lot of scary possibilities. Almost 40 yrs later, the 2:00 pm Thursday tornado siren test still creeps the bepeepers, outta me. Same siren that back in the day meant here comes the Big Boom. But, what's truly weird, whether it's Red Skies at Night or 99 Luftballons, or any other of their ilk, I crank them up and badly sing along, loudly.

This song reminds me of the waves crashing around my ankles at Croatan Beach. Young, and not giving a damn about anything because life was perfect. The beauty of the sun and tide with careless youth was a formula for a sublime day of endless music and laughter. Memories are like the tickler file of your mind, and I enjoy flipping thru the 80's files of my mind, the memories are documented precise, concise, and I have not one friggin regret. Forever young...

This song I used to play repeatedly wherever I went. Thank you for posting this. I'm 49. I used to think I was late being born because as a 14yr old, the post '60's music was hanging around. I love the 1980's. And, I learned to be grateful for what I do have and view all things positive wherever I am timewise. I'm a generation 'X'er and know we create our own realities. ckat77

I agree 100%. These guys songs were all awesome, especially "One way or another." I had a chance to see them in concert back in 1983 in Oakland, Ca - they opened for The Police, and when they (The Fixx) played "Red Skies" everyone started throwing up crushed soda cups as frisbees, lighting lighters and "Going Crazy" (the lead singer shouted this out after the song) - for me, it was, and still is, the most euphoric experience I have ever had in a concert!

Back in the 80's when I was in high-school, there were only two categories of kids our age: the metal-heads or the goody-two shoes, geeks, nerds............or PUSSIES in a simpler word! And the type of music that you listened to was probably the biggest element in determining which of the two that you were in. Me? I was definitely a metal-head. Hard rock and heavy metal has always been and always will be my favorite kind of music. But it wasn't the ONLY type of music that I liked. I also had a like and appreciation for some of the so called "new wave" pop music as well. And this band was definitely one of them. But that was just a skeleton in my closet! That was absolutely TABOO to listen to, like, or give any sanction whatsoever to music like this! Stupid peer-pressure and my fear driven need to fit in.............to be loyal to my pot-head, head banging group of friends that accepted me as "one of them!" But today, at 48 years old, I'm proud to simply just call myself a true music lover. Good music is good music, no matter how you categorize it! Even though hard rock and heavy metal is still, and always will be my favorite, I'm no longer afraid to hide my like for other types of music from my old metal-head buddies! GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC! I'ts as simple as that!

David Lake Elliot Easton from the Cars is as good as any metal guitarist. I've seen people humming along with his solos, because they are so memorable and melodic. Jamie West-Oram from the Fixx really got creative with his guitar tones. By _Phantoms_ they had evolved into such a cohesive band that I couldn't be sure which sounds were guitar, synth, or bass. Their individual parts interact with each other. Brilliant.

David Lake Wow it's like I wrote that about myself. I was the exact same way. Sabbath, Maiden, Ozzy, Krokus, etc. However I loved the New Wave and even some Barry Manilow as well. No one would ever know though because I 'HAD' to be cool. Today I teach my kids what you said, good music is good music and to not be afraid to like all genres of music. Great post David.

David Lake I totally agree with you David, I am about the same age as you and listening to Heavy Metal with all the buds, but the Fixx was and is one of my all time favorite bands of the era....totally hid these cassettes and albums from my friends so I wouldn't get razzed. Now ive got my high school daughters listening to some of my music, including Metallica, Fixx, early Great White, even Kansas and Queen etc....they are much more rounded with music because I aint afraid to show them the wheel of talent we had back then.
