I have always been ashamed of myself whenever I was irritated with my mother for not cooking with involvement . She is no more. There is such terrible regret for my harsh words . After seeing this movie, I felt guilty for so many days. It’s so wrong to take our mothers, sisters and in case of men, the wives for granted. It’s unbelievable rut, what they go through, every day for us.

****SPOILER ALERT**** I don't know if you noticed these points, but these are some of the brilliant yet subtle points in this movie according to me...Most of these points were brought to my notice after I read some other reviews online and I went back to watch them again...This movie is a brilliant brilliant creation!! 1)The characters(at least the main ones) don't have any names..and that's the point...they are every other husband or wife who have perpetuated or accepted patriarchy.. 2) The wife is considered impure when she was on her periods, yet we see that when she was cleaning the table and her hands are greasy and dirty, he still wanted to hug her. 3) When she gets her periods she is not allowed to enter the kitchen and we see the maid come in and do all the cooking and cleaning chores that the wife was doing all these days... showing how the wife is treated like a servant and not as a wife or a daughter. 4)We see the mother in law in her saree when she is at her home but when goes to visit her pregnant daughter to take care of her, whose lifestyle seems "modern", we see that she doesn't wear a saree anymore...she wears churidar.. 5) There is a scene that shows the photos on the wall of all the previous couples who have lived in that house and in the background we hear the washing of utensils, cleaning of the floor, etc showing us how time hasn't changed the women's experiences in that house 6)When the newlyweds come to the house for the first time after their wedding, we see them get out of a red car, and the camera pauses at the car...and we see it is a new car, which doesn't have a nameplate yet...Most likely this car was given as dowry to the groom's family...A few scenes later we see the father in law closing a suitcase filled with gold ornaments and puts it in a safe... That too is dowry...It was worn by the girl on her wedding and after that it was the groom's family's "property".. 7) When she talks about getting a job, the father in law shoots this idea down by saying that women are auspicious to the home and they are doing the greatest work than anyone else...the very next scene we see her washing someone else's underwear.. Also, the father-in-law supports his statement of women not working by saying that the mother-in-law had a master's degree and when she wanted to go for a job, he didn't allow him and listened to his Dad..He tells her that if she asks her mother-in-law about this, she too will have the same opinion that she should stay in the house. BUT, when she talks to her mother-in-law about this, she encourages her to pursue the job but tells her that no one should know that it was her idea... that's the story of most women in such traditional houses ...they want so many things but are so scared to voice their opinions because it is a male dominated household .....

Great points! Also how easily replaceable all the women in their lives were. If it’s not MIL, their DIL will cook, clean, etc. when DIL can’t do it, a maid comes in, or his aunt comes in to serve them. Their lives change by no means, they don’t pitch in with house work, they simply change out women in their lives to serve them.

One scene that passed quickly but was striking was when the “impure” wife touched her husband, the high priest listed out the traditional remedies the husband would have to do - eating cow dung or drinking the juice from dung, but in the same breath, he was quick to make adjustments to these “old” rules by saying he could wash himself in the pond, thereby making it convenient for the husband. But there were no leniencies given to the wife in matters of religion no matter how absurd the rules were.

Small correction. We teach our daughter's not to talk to strangers who are strangers to us as well. But marrying off your daughter to a stranger whom you know better is not any problem. Arranged marriages becomes sin only if you don't do proper enquiry about the person before going into such relationship. Irony is even love marriages where girl and boy know each other well before marriage are getting broken. So, getting known is not important. Understanding each other is vital part for any relationship, whether it is arranged or love.

@@srinivask1003 how can you know about a stranger whom you have just met that too through any wedding apps? All you can do will be to check the family background financial status and his behaviour from some neighbours or some one , you think, know that person( that too limited to ' whether that guy drinks or smokes or has any affair'). But is it enough? It may be enough for the parents but not for the man and woman who are going to live together for rest of their lives. More than ' whether a man drinks or smokes' the question ' whether his thoughts, actions, life style goes with my daughter's Nd vice versa' matters according to me. Yes, adjustment is required in marriage life, but how much? In case of older generation they did everything inorder to protect their family. But we can't expect that from this gen. If the counterparty is not ready to adjust and only one person has to make the adjustments all the time, then is the life worth living?

In a way, women in my family, always were the kinda boss of the house cuz nothing moves in our out or any direction without their consent and decision. Men kind of just tagged along but, given equal respect both ways. And I thought wow that’s amazing considering matriarchy that once existed in the state. But I later realized men just felt kitchen wasn’t their department not because they weren’t welcome 🤩

Menstruation is an important cycle in a woman’s life in India. It was and still in some parts celebrated when a girl has it for the first time. The negativity surrounding it has come because the previous generation was not able to explain the reasons for practices that were followed. The practices are followed in accordance to Ayurveda. It is all about “sukshma” shareer Not sthool shareer (gross body). It is still relevant, but, because our lifestyle has changed we are unable to follow it. And we know where the current lifestyle is leading us.... We need to find out answers for practices. Just because you don’t know or unable to find a reason that doesn’t mean it is nonsense. You may chose not to practice them, but, you should know the reason before discarding them. For detailed information on menstrual cycle read a book called “Ritu Vidya” by Sinu Joseph all about menstrual cycle or else watch her videos about it.

May be some 70 years ago in some rural areas of Kerala these practices may have existed. Not now, now most kitchens are modern, clean and efficient. Women work outside in highly paid professions and domestic help is available if you pay them a sufficient salary and allow a 9:00 to5:00 schedule. Younger men/husbands treat women with respect. Dowry still exists, men definitely have an upper hand in decision making primarily because they are considered bread winners. Life of a woman is not at all as bad as it is depicted in this movie in today’s Kerala. Taboos during period does not exist among Christians. The theme of this movie would have been great some 70 years ago. Yet, if there are any homes in Kerala like this, I doubt it, hope they change. Great direction, loved the dances. Great performance.

I cheered at the end when she threw the water in their faces and locked them up. I rarely get so invested in anything I watch. Many of these things were taught to be by my sister and I have never thought that household chores are only women's domain. I'm thankful for having strong female role models in my life for teaching me how to treat women. Not saying I'm a saint, but I'm self aware enough to own up when I screw up. Was waiting to see your review and you guys nailed it like hell. A few subtle social commentary from movie for your better understanding 1) in indian arranged marriages dowry is a prevailing custom. After the marriage the one car remains is a parting gift from brides FATHER to the GROOM. 2) far right is occupying indian political power now, during the marriage you could see the father character gossips with his friends and one of them says its only beginning. What they imply is what far right indian politics had just start to do what german aryans did to jews to indian minorities. 3)its coustom for the newly weds to visit all relatives from both in laws after arranged marriage. So in the start while during such a visit there are two children in a family a boy and a girl, boy is right there in the dining table taking food along with the couple. Nimisha ask the girl to sit along with them but her mother objects with some excuse. Indoctrination from childhood. 4) in the same scene mentioned in (3) there is reference of beef not being brought to home because of opposition from grand mother. Consumption of beef is a sensitive issue in india since it is considered as a religious totem of hindus. Though in kerala beef is a favourite cuisine unlike other parts of the country, there are conservative sections who don't bring it home. The irony is same grand mother is reading deshabhimani, the left mouthpiece news paper of kerala. 5) sabarimala is the most famous temple in kerala and only women below 8 and above 50 could enter the sanctum. Obviously mensuration devoid women. Male devoties need 40 or such days pre visit rituals of imagined purity, abstain from sex, eating habits etc. India's supreme court after about 12 years trial gave verdict that ritual in sabarimala is discriminatory aganist women with regard to constitutional rights. In light of this verdict many feminist views where circulated in social media. Hooligans who haven't get train from dark ages did many criminal activities targeting those support the verdict. The climax uses this real social even. You could also see some women protesting aganist court verdict in backdrop when nimisha walks out of the hell to large horizon.

There are lot of subtilties that you did not discuss in this review, just brilliant attention to detail 1. The characters in the movie did not have a name (implying this can be anyone) 2. The focus on the pictures on the wall (depicting this is just the way of things generations through) 3. the last walk and background scenes of the different homes every single detail was so well crafted, definitely has been the best movie choice for the year 2021 so far and as always a fantastic review!

So i had asked my mother the same question as to why were women required to lock themselves up in a separate room for 5 days every month during their menstrual cycle. They were not allowed to touch anything, their food and water was left outside the door and they could reenter the household only after 5 days and after washing themselves from head to toe. The logic she shared with me is that, in the good old days the household and kitchen chores were physically very taxing. The entire kitchen work required a woman to squat for hours - cooking, sweeping and swabbing of the floors, fetching pots of water from the well or river. All these tasks were physically very demanding. Also the mother-in-laws were not very relenting or forgoing of these tasks and would be very demanding of their daughter-in-laws to complete these tasks in a particular manner and by a certain time. These 5 days of the month where she was left alone in a separate room actually was for her benefit, that she got all these 5 days to herself, to sleep as much as she wants and generally give the body some time to heal from the loads of work it was doing day-in-and-out. So although to us it seems 'sexist' and 'discriminatory', it was in fact a mandatory 'Me-Time' given to the women via religion just so that some smart-ass doesn't circumvent it. Cos the easiest way at that time to get people to follow something was to build it into the religious fabric / doctrine.

This is so true !!! , But it is a fact that many religions not just hinduism considered this discriminating, not just in one form but in many. The idea mainly would be that In those days there we're no sufficient sanitary remedies( pads or tampons) with such a situation what would a women want the most ? privacy right and this also one time when she goes through hormonal changes as well(varies in women) In such a predicament the last thing you want is being called for any chores.. This slowly became a norm as rightly written by @ruth kurien below All this can be really understood if you can just think what if pads or tampons weren't available to know that read about period poverty faced by people in US . Its there around the globe Atleast in india on man tried to fight corporates to solve the problem ' Arunachalam Murganathan " the PADMAN interactive.aljazeera.com/aje/shorts/india-menstruation-man/ Kudos to Twinkel khanna ,Akshaykumar &Balki many people in india who are poor still practice the 7 day escape route ( JAIL TIME FOR THE PRIVILAGED) because they don't have the sanitary remedies or because they can't afford it. some interesting facts from US for the population ratio we share I found US deeply hit with the problems than India( thanks to people like padman again) www.cbsnews.com/news/period-the-bloody-truth-about-poverty-inequality-cbsn-originals/ Even in countries like USA or America people face this period shaming , its said at least 60% of women in even these SO CALLED DEVELOPED countries face it. www.nsvrc.org/statistics{ for all the pseudo "no patriarchy" of the west} P.S :This is not a reply Intended against You alone @jyoti K ; I had been generic as others read. I agree mostly to what you have written.

No offense dear, but that's not the reason why we have these traditions, instead it is how woman deals with it. When something bad happens and we can't do something about it, people try to find reasons to justify it. That's what happened here. I am ashamed to say that even my family followed this, 50 years ago. My grandmother had to follow it when she was married into d family. I have seen the ruins of such "holding facilities", d one made of palm leaves and easily disposable objects, situated at d farthest end of one acre property. Anything can happen to a woman there. Thieves, snakes anything. The quality of food and water dey had these days, is beyond words. They were not even allowed to dry the clothes under sunlight. The same cloth they used in place of napkins. Talk about hygiene. These stupid traditions were introduced only for discrimination, but women didn't have d strength to fight it, so dey found ways to normalize it. Thats d bitter truth.

This was an eye opener for me on many levels and as I was born and brought up in an urban culture, I could not relate to the main plot of this movie (women being treated during their periods) as I have not seen or heard about this happening until I saw this movie. I was aware of the Sabrimala temple issue and the whole subject relating to the women's entry into the temple. I am so proud of this movie, and its a great awakening to every Indian watching this but at the same time I am embarrassed that such ideologies existed and still do continue to exist in this day and age.

one more thing. It's about song lyrics. lyrics are not written in mainstream malayalam language. This language is known as 'Paluva language'. It was a language which has a secret behaviour/ misterious nature which was used by dalits especially 'Parayar/ sambavar' in Kerala in a period when untouchability, caste descrimination & atrocities were so strong. They used this language inorder to save life and protect their children & women from higher caste land lords. As i said earlier since it has a secret nature higher caste feudal lords couldnt understand what they are saying each other. And time gone and the caste descrimination and atrocities were swept away (I mean directly) and this languge became a rare language. Even present descendants of that community dont know how to use it. But it was carried over from generation to generation by some people. The lyrist of this song whose name is Mrudula devi is one among them. She is a writer and dalit-women activist too.

10:45 actually menstruation is celebrated in parts of Assam as well. I've heard.. They mark the start of a girl's first ever periods with a big festival type celebration. Which i think is really beautiful.

I loved this movie soo much! It covers sooo many aspects of Indian society particularly. Notice how the women do alll the work every single time. Scenarios kept changing, work kept changing (washing clothes, cooking, cleaning the house, giving the father in law something so minuscule as a tooth brush with the toothpaste already on it) yet not once did the man do any work. Not a single work. There was deep rooted sexism and patriarchy, even when it came to God. To make it worse, it was a prestigious family with the son being a sociology teacher 🙄 All in all, this movie deserves to be watched by every single one of us. Thanks for the wonderful review BTW ❤️

Thank you dear Rick and Korbin(Both of you dears did an excellent job analyzing this beautiful film) Kudos to everyone who made this film possible and no Korbin, (unfortunately or fortunately) the distinction isn't between urban n village type setting or household, it's the mindset of couples, their families, what they are told are their roles and societal expectations. You have one life folks so do what you want to and don't let systems, opinions n relationships ruin the essence of your being, happiness or health at any cost. Absolutely smashing A grade review 🙏💓😊👏👏👏👏💐

Thanku guys for watching this movie, so glad to know u loved it. If u noticed the director never mentioned any names (which i think is quite smart) for most of the characters because they are relatable with the names of someone we knows.

Second best thing was they were all Hindus. How convenient. Any Idea why we don't see such socially relevant Mallu movies with xtian and muslims families and background ?

@@zaxcollix123 have you seen these malayalam movies 👇 Trance Patam onn oru vilapam Islam Gadhama(this film even faced a ban in gulf countries) Khoshayatra Kilichundan mambazham Ketiyolaan ente malakha Etc etc etc Have u heard about upcoming malayalam film 'Vaank'. Lipstick under my burkha, gullyboy are some examples from other languages. And still u are saying only hindu backgrounds are questioned in movies 🤦🤷

Available on Prime. Watched last night... & I have no words... 90% homes in India function more or less in the same way. Injustice that no one talks about... A normal looking family... Regular chores... Bt it's time to understand women owe us nothing... They're not obliged to do all of these chores 24×7... also not acknowledged.

Amazing review Pals 💯... there is more in the film its like enlightenment to me as well... womanhood is something that too is respected cuz they go through various hurdles, pains and so on. This film not only intends to override superstitions in India but the world as well. Great effort was done by Geo baby, literally gives justice to all the woman in this world😸
